Who are your least favorite/most hated critcs? by puresmilinbobin movies

[–]emFox 0 points1 point ago

Critics are opinionists arguing from what they saw (the film itself). Opinions are irrelevant to exactly how the critic saw the film and how they report what the film does and does not do. This is why Armond White is a lousy critic: he does not report on what the film does or does not do that informs his observations and opinions. He hopes you take his word at face value. For instance, his "Toy Story 3" review panned the film as being highly commercial and encouraging consumerism, but he does not say how it does this. He just writes it as a statement of fact instead of as a conclusion based on any actual premises.

Basically, opinions don't matter so much as the actual observations made, and whether those observations are grounded in reality.

Doctor Who has never had a very coherent canon. I kinda prefer it that way because it allows for the show to change in tone and substance substantially as the years go on, as it doesn't really have much baggage it has to haul around.

The article states they're looking for writers on this project. It's possible that they paid Justin Marks for his work and then decided to just not use his screenplay.

To counter the science fiction interpretations, which interpret the film through the (arbitrary, in my eyes) rules that Richard Kelly puts forth in his Director's Cut, I'll leave this reading here, which is based off the original, more mysterious (and thus up to interpretation) cut of the film:

What game would you like to see turned into a movie, and who would you want to direct it? by DeathJackalopein movies

"Silent Hill 2"

Directed by David Lynch

What is one movie that you hate, but everyone else seems to love? by jonscotchin AskReddit

To me, it's his reaction to a lot of hostility and anxiety in his life at that point expressed in the most nightmarish way. He was living in Philadelphia, where he didn't want to walk around without arming himself with a stick with nails in it due to his fear of the streets. He was also an unexpected father at the time, which obviously informs everything with Henry, Mary X and the baby.

That had to be pretty hard if it resulted in "Eraserhead," though the ending of it in which he embraces the Lady in the Radiator suggests that perhaps things will get better.

I doubt Lynch does coke. He's a filmmaker who tries to follow his own intuitions and makes films that are about feeling something more than anything else. I doubt he really cares about plot. It's more about provoking dread or awe, terror or bliss. Guy's a painter; it's what he brings to the table.

I love "Inglourious Basterds" because it's almost entirely about being an exercise in tension-building suspense. But if you're just not getting it, then you just won't get it. Nothing wrong with that, everybody has films they don't get.

I don't necessarily feel risks are necessary. Plenty of women buck gender norms every day without necessarily suffering repercussions. I feel in some ways that I'm going against the grain, at least, and it's not because I'm asserting that I'm a man for liking MLP. It's rather that I'm doing things atypical of the gender to which people assign me and the gender to which I assign myself. Atypical doesn't mean bad, just different. It's atypical of a guy like me to watch this show, and in fact, I sometimes feel anxious getting through episodes perhaps in part because I'm aware of it and that certain social cues and pressures are pushing me to reject it. I refuse to though, as I feel it's decent TV and I often really need something to get my mood up.

So I won't be going out and saying, "Real men like watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." Something like that just makes the idea of gender arbitrary, and it also serves to exclude people who don't like MLP.

[–]emFox 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I see this everywhere though. MLP is just another outlet for people to latch onto to express themselves. But part of my fascination with this whole thing is how people are bucking gender norms in their watching it. While it may be a stretch to demand credit for it, I think it's a good thing that men feel comfortable with something considered feminine when we give so much lee-way to girls that enjoy things considered masculine.

[–]emFox 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, but you end up getting that with a ton of media. Loads of furries are complete oddballs as well (surrounding an oddball hobby, making them especially oddball-ish), but there's likely plenty who aren't total manchildren.

I subscribe to /r/mylittlepony. I like the art that goes through there, some of the commentary, but it's not really a fixture in my life. I spend most of my time trying to read film criticism if I'm not getting distracted by anything else on Reddit.

If you could revive a cancelled TV show, which one would it be? by suapin AskReddit

[–]emFox 0 points1 point ago

Twin Peaks, but with some revisions. It'd be awesome if it came back with complete control ceded to David Lynch and Mark Frost, which would ultimately result in extending the momentum that the main question had in pushing the show forward: Who Killed Laura Palmer?

ABC helped kill the show by getting pushy.

That said, it's still fantastic the way it is.

Yeah. Shaping your life to revolve exclusively around this show, as well as pushing it on you without your say in the matter, goes too far in my eyes. So I can sympathize with that.

[–]emFox 43 points44 points ago

I enjoy the show, and I won't downvoting you for not liking it. I can completely understand not liking it, as it is children's television, and I wouldn't even go so far as saying it's the best thing on TV. However, it's a fun show. It doesn't pigeonhole girls into passive gender roles. It's colorful and incredibly well animated for a TV show, the songs are enjoyable, and the characters generally well written and likable. And I enjoy the injokes and pop culture references (like finding equine versions of the Dude, Walter, Donny, and Jesus in the bowling alley in one episode). Finally, it does all of this with little to no irony. Every sentiment seems sincere and honest. It makes for a great cool down from a stressful day. It doesn't feel like an extended ad for toys.

Now if the fans are bugging you, I can find it understandable if they're really insistent and pushing the show on you. But if they're just expressing enthusiasm and appreciation for it, I would think you could not let that bother you (to an extent, naturally). But you get this in every fandom, and you get weirdos in every fandom. This isn't phenomenon exclusive to the newest incarnation of My Little Pony.

You gave it a shot. You didn't like it. That's totally fine; just don't begrudge those that do like the show just for liking the show.

Yeah. I still go over it in my head now and again. I find it hilarious, but then I cringe and feel guilty. I just don't know enough about her situation to say if this actually the case, but it likely could be simply because of who she is and the situation she's in.

I hope that she at least took something away from it that was positive to her. But I doubt that's the case.

I can totally see this. There were a lot of kids in high school that were picked on, so their response to nearly all social advances was hostility. On the other hand, neither of us really knew her that well.

Not me, but a girl in high school.

Now to set this up, there was this girl in our school that was in the special education classes. She had some sort of neurological disability and was also missing a leg, and if she wasn't in a wheelchair she was using a prosthetic. I'll call her the disabled girl.

Disabled girl, we eventually learn, can be a real bitch to other people for no real good reason. Perhaps she didn't know better, but regardless, it was not endearing behavior. So this girl telling me the story says that she simply says, "Hello," to disabled girl one day. Disabled girl comes back by insulting her badly. I believe she called her a cunt. Point is, this is an inordinate response to somebody just being nice.

This pisses this girl off, naturally.

Now, disabled girl at the time had a habit of detaching her prosthetic leg and holding it for some reason. No idea why, maybe she wanted some fresh air on her stump, but at this moment she has her prosthesis removed. The girl telling me the story, in her fury, grabs the girl's leg from her and chucks it down a flight of stairs before leaving. No regrets.

tl;dr Girl I was talking to in high school throws a disabled girl's prosthetic leg down a flight of stairs because the disabled girl can't be bothered to be polite.

EDIT: Wow, I didn't expect this to go over so well. I probably should have added this before, but I'm ambivalent about this incident as a whole. I'll add that I was a junior or senior at the time, as was this disabled girl and the girl that threw her leg down the stairs. While I think she was probably intelligent enough that she should know better than to flippantly insult people trying to be nice, I also don't know too much about what's wrong with her. So it's a bit of a guilty laugh for me.
