GPhoto, or, How to use the Raspberry Pi as an inexpensive intervalometer or remote shutter. by JustinPMin raspberry_pi

Nice.

A question many of us have is how long will a battery (4 AA NiMH?) pack last? I expect this to be a major hack field.

Switching Laptop HDD to SSD- Where to find the Drivers? by Microwave_Petein techsupport

The drive will work right off, but you may want to make sure all automatic defragmenting is turned off, especially if your system had a spinner at install. Look it up.

Thinking about converting an external HD to an internal, but not sure if it's worth it by spkr4thedead51in hardware

[–]elucubra 0 points1 point ago

I have two 1.5 WD 3.5 externals at work. They are regular SATA HDDs with USB adaptors. I also have two WD passport SE that have direct USB 3.0 boards, no adaptor. I think if you buy an external from an integrator brand, you'll likely find regular drives.

What is a "redundant make of drive"? Some newfangled type of RAID?

India's $47 Android tablet makes a splash - 1.4MM sales in 2 weeks. by pdincin Android

I hve toyed a little with a resistive screen tablet. It was a really awful user experience. I'm looking into the Ainol tablets, specifically the Elf. Looks damn good for a tablet in the $100 range!

A lot of the projects here are not necessarily the cheapest or easiest. Often the goal of a project is to scratch a DIY / "beacuse I can" itch.

We desperately need hack and hacking ( the general meaning, not just electronic/computing), as in hacker spaces, hack an engine, hack a solution...

In Spain, estacionar and estacionamiento are proper, but common use is "aparcar" or "aparcamiento".

Belgians too. I learnt French in Belgium, and whenever someone says numbers in French I have to do math in my head.

Esponjoso can be used for bone-dry things, and it denotes elasticity and springiness. Moist can be used for baked goods with an inherent humidity, but of somewhat brittle nature. Some brownies come to mind.

It is often used in the context though. I'll give you that.

Any other sites or utilities similar to Crucial for finding out max memory? by imunknown2uin computertechs

[–]elucubra 0 points1 point ago

FWIW:

I am typing this on a VAIO whose max RAM rating is 2GB. I had a So-DIMM that matched the specs, and tried it. Since I have x32 W7 on it I didn't try going for four, but as soon as I have time I'll install x64 and replace the 1 GB for anothe 2GB, for a total of 4 GB.

Exactly the same thing has happened to my kids' Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo. I very much doubt you are going to damage anything, so I would say try it, as long as you can return/exchange.

HDMI plug computers are coming; they draw power from the TVs and displays they plug into & provide content to using a revised HDMI standard called MHL (mobile high-definition link) which enhances the HDMI interface with the power it needs, eliminating the need for a Micro USB charging cable. by Sailerin raspberry_pi

[–]elucubra 5 points6 points ago

The lower priced monitors still have VGA and a few DVI. HDMI is mid to high end monitors. These low spec, and older monitors, are what part of the target market is going to find in schools etc...

What alternatives have you found good and easy to do? I would love to switch to a FOSS solution, but what I have seen don't seem to have the NAT to NAT part easy enough for the clients.

I'm getting a few RasPi, so don't consider me a hater, but for what you describe, I own one of these, and it does the job beautifully, in a very convenient package:

1080p Media Player

It cost me less than 30€. I took three weeks to arrive from China, but hey, for that money! ( I see now they have a US or UK warehouse SKU, so if you live in either US or EU it should get there in a few days). You may need to check the question to figure out the output selection button ( composite/HDMI, etc.. but not hard at all. The manual sucks). It does have a great plus: Actual buttons on the case, so in case you lose the remote, you still have a fully working device!

Been on the asking side of this a few times in Europe, and it sometimes has to do with being on the other side of the world, posting at night, when exposure in the US starts, and having to sleep then work after posting. When you are able to check again, your post is alive, but you are replying or voting 18-24 hrs. late.

Don't automatically assume others are assholes.

[Build Complete] Mini-ITX Gaming PC by zowkiin buildapc

For an HTPC the sweet spot is probably a Fusion mobo; This zotac is quite pimped-up.

This Gigabyte is pretty cheap.

These are pretty much "add case, HDD, optical, and RAM, and off you go"
