Good question... There is longevity in Social media as long as people continue to talk about products, brands and purchasing. People who desire a relationship with products and brands that extends past the physical item. Consumers use this relationship to reflect how they want others to see them.

Will it always be dominated by Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest? Most likely not. It will continue to evolve with consumers. Check out the new trend in SoLoMo apps to see whats new in social and think of the consumer applications possible-pretty cool stuff.

As far as career, I don't base my whole career on social. I have a pretty deep understanding of digital marketing in general. Social is a little too narrow to do that right now.

Hi - 12 years ago I graduated with the same degree and wondered the same damn thing. I chose not to go into broadcasting because the pay was so low and with a few lucky breaks, I'm now in advertising developing Social Media strategy for some very well known brands. I make an excellent living. It is long hours but ultimately fascinating work with great pay. I love hiring broadcasting students because advertising/marketing is a visual communication that has a very short amount of time to tell an emotionally evocative story. I feel that broadcasting students know exactly how to do this and look for this type of experience. My recommendation is to check out agencies in your area and see if you can do an 'externship' over the summer. Get a taste for the business and work and go from there.
