Health-wise, both personally and for our future landfills, it's good to stay away from PVC. "No on vinyl, and that's final" as grist.org says.

I use a think, invincible Manduka, I recommend their eKo. Also Jade has a good "green" mat.

Mmm, good to hear. I haven't been impressed when I visited, but I typically go to Alf's (I bike, it's in my neighborhood), so I'm not a regular.

First solo ride I went on I got a flat out near Superior...changed 80% of the tire, found I had the wrong-sized tube (thanks, bike shop). So sign me up!

Not seeing them mentioned...but if organic/healthy is important to you, skip Whole Foods/Sprouts/Alfalfa's/Sunflower and go to Vitamin Cottage. It's not as hip as the other eco groceries, and the produce section is weak, but much of the exact same stuff at Whole Foods is 20% more.

And Alfalfa's, which I love, they're local and independent, is 10% more than Whole Foods. Ouch.

I nearly got killed the other day, going down 9th St. in Boulder, Colorado, because I had the nerve to ride four feet off the curb, still toward the right edge of the lane, where obscure signs says "bikes use lane."

A car nearly hit me, passing me on the left.

So you can't win, when there's no lane.

I'm pretty new on the road--last summer was my first road biking around Boulder--my big and really only remaining insecurity that keeps me from getting out there more is if I get a flat. I really don't know how to change tires well, I tried once. Is there a class or something I can take somewhere? I'd love to be getting out there more without feeling like any ol'nail or glass could leave me stranded a 100 miles from civilization.

Amen. Last time in LA I had meeting in Venice, left by bike Hollywood about same time as the guy (BMW) I was meeting (we didn't know we were both in Hwood to begin with).
