A lot of hospitals have something called "Financial Assistance" or "Charity Care" applications, where they basically waive your hospital bill(s) if they find that you are indeed unable to pay. I believe that the hospital gets a tax credit or something for each bill they waive. Anyway, it's usually just a one page application and you turn in like, 3 months bank statements or something.

Ask the hospital billing staff if they have anything like that?
