Question about death... by ehickox2012in atheism

[–]ehickox2012[S] -2 points-1 points ago

Definition of Nothing:

not anything; no single thing:

My WHOLE point of this HUGE DRAWN OUT DISCUSSION, is that, you can't prove a negative. It's called Modus Tollens:

You can't claim that nothing is 'not anything.' This is my problem with the human description of 'nothing.'

PS: Modus Tollens is often a useful tool when having a discussion/debate about god. ;) Thanks for your time. Good debate.

I know exactly what a conceptualization is. From the Dictionary:

[to] form a concept or idea of (something)

Something ≠ Nothing. QED

PS: I did not mean to imply that the actual description was a conceptualization. I mean that the fact that there was a description implies that conceptualization took place inside the brain.

Okay then, Let me rephrase the original quote then:

we can describe stuff or the absence of stuff

Do it. Describe for me, 'nothing'. ;)

PS: Don't even try to say "We've been through this; nothing is the absence of anything, there, I described it. QED," because if you do anything to this effect, you are conceptualizing it. You can't escape conceptualizing nothing (falsely, of course). From the moment you read the word in the comment, SOMETHING forms in your brain: a description. You created something from nothing!

we can describe stuff without conceptualizing it

You didn't say anything about nothing (ha). You said "stuff." An apple is under the category of stuff.

Okay then, prove it. Describe for me, an apple, without conceptualizing it. I'll even make it easier for you. Describe for me, any one thing without conceptualizing it. You pick.

Keep in mind, no pictures in your head, no recalling of past knowledge, no memories, no modeling, no writing/typing, or no vocalizations are to be used. Otherwise, as soon as you would write/speak/think of the apple, you would be conceptualizing it. Go on. Try it.

You can't describe something without your brain (at leas subconsciously) conceptualizing it... In order to output something (describe it), some form of processing needs to take place (conceptualization). If you were to try to describe something without conceptualizing it, you would be spurting out random adjectives.

Example: Person A: "Describe an apple without picturing it in your head (conceptualizing) it"

Person B: "..."

You can't do it.
