Teaching poker to complete beginners? by pancakeswtfin poker

[–]efischerSC2 6 points7 points ago

Here's what you do:

  1. Print out a list of hand rankings. Make enough so that each player can have their own.

  2. Have them watch a YouTube video no longer than three minutes that quickly goes over how to play. I'm sure there are hundreds out there. Do some video watching and find the one that puts the game in the simplest terms.

  3. Play a full orbit (as in, go around the table and have everyone be "the dealer") with the cards face up. Don't give any strategy advice, just tell them their options and let them pick one. Play the hand out, and see what happens.

  4. After that, have everyone put up $1 for the game. Winner takes all.

Hand analysis. Did I play this wrong? Did I make a mistake on the flop? by dsjersey24in poker

[–]efischerSC2 1 point2 points ago

When he bet at you after the flop, it was him saying "I have a draw."

Two pairs, maybe. But, odds are he had either the flush or the straight draw (or both!).

What does that mean? It means you have him beat. And he knows it.

So what do you do? You don't call, that's for sure. You raise. You make him wonder if it's worth putting his chips into the pot on the off chance the card he wants comes up.

He folds, you collect the money, and the 9 on the river never gets reveled.

As far as your question goes: Easy fold.

Here in Pittsburgh, "dope" is reserved almost exclusively for heroin unless you are an old person, in which case it does in fact refer to marijuana.

I repeat: AK88o is not a good hand. You should have just folded and avoided this whole situation.

How many people turn out to watch speed cubing competitions? I would love to attend one just to watch, but, I don't want to be weird. Are spectators allowed/encouraged?

Speaking of competitions, how would one find out about them? Is there a major cubing website/forum out there? If so, please share some links! :D

What is a competition like, from a competitors perspective? Walk me through an event.

What does the typical small talk conversation between two cubers sound like? What do you bring about/compare?

Do you have any awards?

What is the difference between you and someone who comes close to the world records? What makes those people be able to do what they do? Why couldn't you? (No offense, of course)

Best cubing related memory?

EDIT: Is there a cubing subreddit out there?

Also: Is there a page where Reddit posts job openings?

LPT Request: How to stop constant armpit sweat by peartsagodin LifeProTips

[–]efischerSC2 1 point2 points ago

Just trim it. No one is going to take a second look at the length of your armpit hair. They would only notice it if you had none (or a ton).

Seriously... I do this. Just trim it and your armpits will smell wonderful.

I do that sort of thing semi-regularly.

I have a fake trillion dollar bill in my wallet and I often (when there isn't a line) reach for my wallet, loudly sigh, and say "I hate to do this to you, but, do you have change for a trillion?" as I hand them the fake bill.

I only do this when the cashier seems like they would have fun with it, so, it almost always gets a laugh from the two of us. I actually started doing it after some guy did it to me when I was working register at a Goodwill.

The best part is how red my girlfriend's face gets when I'm doing it. I'm embarrassing, apparently.

HYJ as an accountant by Pygarin HowsYourJob

I had been under the impression this is a common misconception, and while slavery was a major issue at the time, it was just one of many, rather than a primary reason for a civil war.

What was the Civil War 'about' then? I had always thought state rights was the answer.

Ordered some champagne for our anniversary. The waiter asked if we'd enjoy seeing it opened with a saber. by psizzlein pics

[–]efischerSC2 0 points1 point ago

This past New Years my girlfriend and I bought some champagne. Only we couldn't get it open. We ended up getting a knife out of the kitchen and trying this (we had been drinking before the champagne).

Long story short, rather than have the cork fly out, we break the top of the bottle and I end up cutting myself.

You might also want to try the college subreddits as well.

"Gambling" by 5ofakindin poker

[–]efischerSC2 9 points10 points ago

First of all, poker is gambling. There is a skill factor that makes it less of a gamble than a game like roulette, but, at the end of the day, you're playing a game where a new player could beat a seasoned pro because of some lucky cards.

I know, I know... No one likes to call their hobby a term they perceive as negative, but, get over it. You're playing poker, and what you are doing as you play is gambling.

That said. Yes. It does annoy me when people call it gambling. I know they are technically correct, but, it doesn't sit well with me. The people who say it though, are the people who have never really given the game a chance.

So you have two options: You can either explain to them that it is a game of skill with a luck element thrown in or you can just ignore it because at the end of the day, the opinion of random people who you know don't have a clue as to what they are talking about doesn't matter.

I tend to go with the later.
