When I watch "The Big Bang Theory" I feel simultaneously insulted and pandered to. by Kijafain geek

[–]earthsandwich 1 point2 points ago

I'm with you. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one of all my geeky friends (including both of my sisters and my parents, all just as nerdy as I am if not more so) who doesn't like the show.

I don't have a problem with the actors or anything - they're doing their jobs well and they seem like fun people, but I just don't get how you can watch TBBT and think that it's somehow redeeming the image and status of geeks/nerds/pick-your-nouns.

When I watch it I see the same tired old stereotypes and the same underhandedly cruel jokes at their expense - the kind of teasing I spent my whole childhood enduring - and it just makes me REALLY uncomfortable.

Weird Q of the day: Do we have land lines on campus? by mcglavenin cmu

[–]earthsandwich 4 points5 points ago

Try one of the student-org offices on the UC 3rd floor as well. I know, for example, that the AB office and the Spring Carnival office both have at least one dedicated land-line (so they have official CMU numbers and so they never need to change their number for vendors and the like). I bet you the various student gov't offices and the Tartan have land lines too. If you have friends in high enough places in any of these orgs, they might be able to let you use the phones for a bit. Especially Carnival, since their external business is pretty much done for the year.

Suggestions for Jasper/Icefields area by pope_fundyin hiking

[–]earthsandwich 0 points1 point ago

I spent parts of 9 summers in Jasper. Fuckin' A, I envy you for going there. I miss it so, so much. Quick opinions on what I've done of your list:

Maligne Canyon is lovely and easy/moderate.

Whistlers Summit rocks, plus the Tramway back down will be a nice cap-off.

The glacier walk is fantastic, totally worth doing.

Two other favorites that are reasonably short: the Valley of the Five Lakes, and Old Fort Point.

Other non-hiking attractions: Maligne Lake is a must-see. It's the most spectacular place I've ever seen on this planet. My emotional home. =]

Pyramid Lake/Pyramid Island is also wonderful, and very close to town so it's easy to get up to. It was always the very first place I went when I got to Jasper.

In case you're interested, here are some photos from the last time I was there.

Parked next to this guy all weekend. Hello lovely. by earthsandwichin Autos

[–]earthsandwich[S] 2 points3 points ago

Damn. I think you're absolutely right, now that I see that listing. Well spotted. Come to think of it, I was just thinking to myself last night when I pulled in next to it that it should have more outlandish proportions. It fits rather neatly into an ordinary parking space, and - I actually just took the elevator down and looked - it's no wider than my 2006 Honda Accord. A real Diablo should be ABSURD.

Dad is coming to visit me at Pitt. What should we do over the weekend? by jamith87in pittsburgh

[–]earthsandwich 2 points3 points ago

Go to the Strip District on Saturday or Sunday morning, and wander through the shops - coffee at La Prima, biscotti from Enrico, Latin groceries at Reyna, cheeses, meats, and Italian groceries at PennMac, pepperoni rolls at Mancini's, seafood at Wholey, local bounty at the Public Market, breakfast at Pamela's... It's a wonderfully vibrant place to go, especially when showing off Pittsburgh to someone who doesn't know the city.

For a nice dinner, everyone seems to know Church Brew Works, which always wows the out-of-towners, but there's a dizzying array of spectacular restaurants that are equally good an in many cases better. Casbah, Cure, Spoon, Meat&Potatoes, Piper's, Root174, and Dinette all come to mind, and I could keep going but there's five already.

Take one of the Inclines up Mount Washington. Sure, it's cliche, but for a reason - it's really lovely up there. Go for a walk in Frick, Schenley, or Highland Parks.

If you're feeling cultured, the Pittsburgh Symphony's concert this weekend is going to be especially superb too.

I've got more ideas but this is enough of a wall of text already. Have fun this weekend! I hope your dad likes Pittsburgh!

New to Pittsburgh - seeking sushi and thrift stores by RCGNZRin pittsburgh

[–]earthsandwich 2 points3 points ago

Chaya is probably the best combination of authentic and reasonably priced sushi in the city. If you want to go super fancy for omakase, [Umi](www.bigburrito.com/umi) is also excellent, but my favorite is Chaya. The chef/owner takes his craft very seriously, and the result is sublime.

There's a bunch of other decent places to get sushi if you're willing to stretch the definition of "sushi" - others have mentioned Andy inside Wholey's, and he's definitely awesome. Hilarious dude. The rolls are enormous and not terribly expensive, but covered with all sorts of sauces and not very authentic. That may not matter to you - depends what you're looking for. Also Sushi Too/Two/Three, as well as Kiku, all decent options. As for Nakama, it's an overpriced overtrendy hibachi place masquerading as a fancy restaurant. Save your money (unless your idea of a nice evening is overpaying for your dinner because you might get to see a Steeler or two come eat there).

As for thrift stores, they're scattered all over and range from the usual Goodwill here and there (East Liberty and South Side tend to have some interesting things) as well as slightly more esoteric places like Avalon, where you won't find as much but what's there is more interesting.

Happy hunting! And welcome to Pittsburgh!

Guess That Car (Week 1) by spocketfanin Autos

[–]earthsandwich 0 points1 point ago*

Actually you've got it backwards - the Passport was a rebadged Trooper. It was Honda's early and rather scrambling attempt to capitalize on the new (at the time) SUV market without having to spend time designing and building their own vehicle. Isuzu already had a lot of experience building trucks, so they just took Honda's money and made a bunch of Troopers with Honda badging.

EDIT: Ah yes, it was a Rodeo. Whoops. My point still stands though. They were Isuzus rebadged as Hondas/Acuras, not the other way round.

Isuzu Axiom. I'd recognize that absurd front end anywhere.

When is job season for employers in Electrical Engineering? by jewdaiin ECE

Ah. I was ECE - don't know too many CS types. There does seem to be a higher proportion of smugness on that side of campus tho...

Hahahaha, ECE? I can believe that. Most are awesome but there are a few like that for sure. Who was it?

When you figure it out, let me know. Carnegie Mellon here, been looking since May. What I've seen seems to be that there's a giant Web bubble, so if you're a rockstar coder you can make six figures working for some company with too much VC money and a goofy name that isn't going to exist in 2 years. But anybody else...good luck.
