I understand there may be a need to control certain animal populations but taking a picture with a big smile on your face while the animal behind you is obviously in great pain is unconscionable and inhumane.

This makes me so mad I can't even comment. I don't know how these people look themselves in the mirror every morning.

I'm in a really unfair position at work and could use some ideas from anyone who thinks they can help? by phillyjerryin AskReddit

Shouldn't matter in regards to the summer. If you have a contract for next year, even though you don't work over the summer, you are still an employee of the district. Your dues are most likely paid for the year not the "school year." If you're a regular teacher then I'd assume you would be subject to lay-off by senority - which could be a problem for a new teacher. But, unless the music program is being cut you should have some protection because you run a speciality program that not many are qualified to teach.

Thanks for clearing that up! I don't think we are in the same state but I would strongly suggest that you go back to your union and tell them your concerns. In my state there are protections for just this type of thing. Your union can explain everything to you, different scenerios that could happen, what the district's options are and what your options are. There are many things that come in play here such as are you a regular or temporary teacher? Is your district laying teachers off? Your union is there to answer all your questions and you'll sleep better knowing what they have to say. Let us know how it works out. Best of luck! PS - Regarding your concern about not being a member if your contract isn't renewed - You will still be a member until your current contract expires and possibly through the summer months. Talk to your union - that's why you pay dues!!

Sorry but could you clear something up for me - "The Union stepped in, agreed I was being treated unfairly and harassed and transferred me to a small elementary school." Do you feel the union helped you by getting you transferred or you feel the union harassed you?

hey r/pics, remember when a drunk girl walked into my house and I let her crash her? this is what her friend left on my doorstep today while I was out. by lemcottin pics

[–]debbieknapp 1 point2 points ago

Yes, "possible." I wasn't there. I didn't see who got out of the driver's seat of the car. Also, I'm speaking to the kind and decent young man who helped the young women. I would have something VERY different to say if I was talking to the drunk girl.

I'm a mother of twenty-somethings and possible drunk driving issue aside, I think you did a really nice thing. Hopefully she wasn't in a car accident and she learned a lesson from the situation. She is a lucky, lucky girl that she stumbled into your house. She also needs better drinking friends!

Thanks for getting back to me!. I'm in CA and we went through the same thing back in the mid nineties. it's been pretty rough for the last 6-7 years now with major lay-offs in all districts. Our local district is talking about another 300 for next year. I'm not sure who will be left to supervise the students! Georgia's not looking bad!!

Off topic - but what state are you in? Most every state I know is laying teachers off right and left and if you are a newly credentialed teacher your chances of finding full time employment is small to nil.

Barack Obama's insightful words on abortion by Mike_Mercuryin atheism

[–]debbieknapp 0 points1 point ago

Good point. When science can do this, and I'm sure they will someday, we'll have to ask the question does this glob of cells still belong to the woman or has she "given them up" like in an adoption. This is assuming she made the choice to remove them. Which leads us in circle right back to when does life start and should it be a women's choice because it's her body? Whew! That was a lot of thought to end up right back in the same place. For me, I'm a firmer believer in choice. The decision I make may not be the decision someone else would make but every women should have the choice.

I don't claim to speak for all pro-choice people and I do appreciate the attempt at removing religion from the pro-life argument; although I'm skeptical that the religous minded can actually do that. Religion aside, and using your question of when does life begin, my pro-choice rebuttal would be convince me that the"glob of cells" can exist outside of a women's body, independently, without help. I think that science has come to a conclusion on this it's just not the conclusion that the pro-life society wants to hear.

I was sexually assualted/raped last night and I'm afraid to go to the police because I'm black and he's white. :( by 2473948in AskReddit

[–]debbieknapp -2 points-1 points ago

If the police/DA decides there isn't enough evidence to prosecute please be aware that you can still go to your school's council and have him kicked out of school. A very similar thing happened to a relative and although the DA said there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute she bravely moved forward with a student board and the rapist was subsequently suspended from school until she graduated. Not the optimum outcome but at least she didn't have to worry about seeing him on campus.
Talk to other girls. You will probably find others that he raped but who are not as brave as you to come forward. Seek counseling. If you are at a university there is most likely a rape council on staff that you can see at no cost. It's not your fault - you didn't do anything wrong. Stay strong!!

Ever wonder why value-added data is so important for teachers? by duke_solarisin education

[–]debbieknapp 1 point2 points ago

I agree with most of your comment but I still believe that it doesn't matter how many years you've previously spent in a classroom once you are out for more than a couple of years you are losing touch. I'm not saying there aren't some good admins out there with real classroom experience I just think they their own job problems/challenges and what was happening 5 or 10 years ago when they may have been teaching has lost some of its relevancy.

[–]debbieknapp 8 points9 points ago

Again and again we see how out of touch administration is with what is actually going on in the classroom. It's not a crime that they lose touch - they're not in the classroom. What's a crime is that they can't or won't admit that they are out of touch with day to day teaching.

Two-fold question. I need an education to become an educator. I want to be a teacher, but I guess I need college first... by silverscreemerin education

You may want to look in another direction. America is not desperate for teachers. There are thousands of well qualified teachers out of work because of the cuts in education.
