Hey assclown, I was hoping they'd have primary sources to cite, or use research tools like the OED.

Edit: I like the word assclown, so I'm gonna leave it here.

TIL: Why coins have milled (finely serrated) edges by blockyin todayilearned

[–]deathrowdeli 4 points5 points ago

Back in the day, when coins were made out of more valuable metals, people would take a sharp blade and shave off tiny amounts of silver (or other precious metals) from outer edges of the coins. They would accumulate lots and lots of shavings from the edges of many, many coins and melt the shavings down and then re-sell the metal for a profit. Milling the outer circumference of a coin leaves a very regular and identifiable characteristic to the coin. If you took a blade and shaved off the outside edge of it, you would remove the grooves/milling/ribbing. A coin that has the milling shaved off of it has less precious metal in it because a con-artist has stolen a small amount of it. This was a big deal when coins were still made out of precious metals.

This is not a problem in the 21st century, as the value of the metals used to manufacture US coins is less than the face value of currency that it represents.

OK, I did a google search and I have to post this link. When you click Currency Identification for Blind and Visually Impaired it leads to a 404 Page Not Found. :-(

Neat. In modern times this can be very helpful for the blind in identifying a coin (for example, the US quarter and one-dollar coins are similar in size but the quarter has pronounced milling, making it easily distinguishable by touch). There is a movement for the US Mint to make the paper money more easily identifiable by the blind (currently all US paper currency is indistinguishable by touch).

I think their marketing of Slyders as something people "crave" is genius. I totally crave me some Slyders.

EDIT: ...or is it ingenious? Can somebody help me out?

Did you see this coming? I assume that with a baby on the way, you already established some nest-egg. Are you in a financially good position for the moment? Does your wife work? Would you ever consider being a stay at home dad? Are you eligible for COBRA insurance (important with a prego wife and baby on board). Do you plan on continuing in the same line of work or are you considering other fields?

I didn't know anything of the political leanings of the owners of Our Kitchen...just that their food is good, the service is friendly, and the price is right.

Although, it does make for an interesting contrast to the hippy-wellstonian-co-op people at the Seward Cafe, whom I love so dearly.

I guess that's why I'm politically moderate?
