there was no Internet

There was no WWW, but ARPANET and later Internet certainly existed in the 80's and had a dense population of SFF fans. SF-Lovers newsgroup and digest existed at least as far back as 1981. Google's archive goes back to May-15 1981

Because he was stapled to the chicken.

A vegetable is a plant or part of a plant used as food. Claiming a tomato is fruit, so it isn't a vegetable is like saying a square isn't a rectangle. All fruits are vegetables, many vegetables are not fruits.

[–]dbenhur 0 points1 point ago

Not quite a contrary argument. The question is not "does spending influence election outcomes?", it's "does the perceived need for spending influence political behaviour?".

[–]dbenhur 3 points4 points ago

Here's Levitt's paper. I'd love to hear comment from someone more skilled at this sort of analysis than I.

The conclusion that campaign spending has a very small impact on election outcomes may be true without fully countering the argument that campaign spending undemocratically distorts politics. The overwhelmingly widespread belief that campaign spending is critical to winning elections motivates elected officials and candidates to cater to the concerns of their donors over those of their constituents regardless of the efficacy or necessity of those funds.

Typically a package named <lang>-dev includes header files and tools required to build extensions for the language runtime, but which aren't required or supplied by the core language package or standard modules/libraries.

You can see a package's declared dependencies with apt-cache show. Looking at python-pip, you'll notice the above apt-get redundantly named python-setuptools, but did need to be explicit to get python-dev:

$ apt-cache show python-pip | grep Depends
Depends: python (>= 2.5), python-support (>= 0.90.0), python-pkg-resources, python-setuptools (>= 0.6c1)
$ apt-cache show python python-support python-pkg-resources python-setuptools | grep Depends
Depends: python2.7 (>= 2.7.1-1~), python-minimal (= 2.7.1-0ubuntu5)
Depends: python (>= 2.5), python (<< 2.8)
Depends: python (>= 2.5), python (<< 2.8), python-pkg-resources (= 0.6.15-1ubuntu1)
Depends: python (>= 2.5), dpkg (>= 1.14.19)

I did not miss what you said. It obfuscates the real thing you are trying to describe. There is no need to behave as if karma is real, because it is not. Behave as if acting well to your fellow beings promotes your personal and communal wellbeing and you will discover that such behavior and belief is supported by fact and experience.

Karma is a concept from Hinduism and has nothing to do with payback in this life. The goodwill you receive and/or foster for acts of kindness and goodwill in this life is the real social force, not the superstitious nonsense of karma.

FIFY. In real life, "karma" is superstitious nonsense.

So, when you think of not-ACID, do you expect (!A & !C & !I & !D), or !(A & C & I & D) ? "NoSQL" data stores will typically relax one or two of those attributes but not throw the whole thing out. Durability is probably the worst thing to relax if you want to store anything someone might care about.

false arrogance

Nope. In science and technology there are actual correct answers. Bullshit doesn't cut it. If we require that you actually demonstrate the ability to comprehend and work with the fundamental concepts in the field, then you get to to keep working on mastering the field. If you fail to grok the fundamentals, then it's a poor allocation of resources to have you filling a spot that someone competent and interested would like.

Every degree should have weeder classes. Fail early so you can redirect and pursue something more fit for your interests and abilities.
