A couple questions for you guys regarding cover art. by neonmeatein Malazan

[–]davidjwi 0 points1 point ago

I always thought it was Krul's Belfry (I think that's the correct name).

Need new fantasy book recommendation, please! Details inside. by dissociation844in Fantasy

[–]davidjwi 2 points3 points ago

I'd definitely give WoT a chance - it's a really enjoyable read and won't take you too long to get through (compared with, say, Malazan or other 'heavier' series). There's a bit of a lull towards the middle of the series but it picks up again and Sanderson is doing an amazing job finishing off the series. Plus, the final book comes out in January...

Great article (as I have come to expect from Wired). Seems Migicovsky has his head switched on and is doing all he can to make Pebble happen as soon as possible. Awesome.

Does mathematics ever become less overwhelming? by The_MPCin math

[–]davidjwi 1 point2 points ago

I'm in my seventh year of mathematics higher education (4 years of undergrad MMath, 2 years of postgrad Masters and now in first year of a PhD). The scope and level of the maths I'm doing right now still scares, intimidates and overwhelms me. Pretty much every day.

But then again, maths is so goddamn awe inspiring that the high points outweigh the low points by a long shot. Embrace the overwhelming feeling and realise that the reason it's overwhelming is because it is truly amazing stuff.

Removing a specific file by deadstumpin linux4noobs

[–]davidjwi 4 points5 points ago

Open up a terminal and type

rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite

To remove it. If it says permission denied (or similar) you may need to add "sudo" before to act as root:

sudo rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite

Does that work?

Anyone familiar? The Norrington Room at Blackwell's, Oxford - Over 160000 volumes on 3 miles of shelving. Glorious. by bitemydickallthetimein books

[–]davidjwi 2 points3 points ago

The sheet music shop has four floors iirc (I studied at Oxford 4-8 years ago). Absolutely loved Blackwells and couldn't find anything similar when I did my Masters just outside NYC...

They've said it's not going to be micro usb - their reason is that they can't make it waterproof with micro usb.

UK Redditors, BBC Proms details are announced at 2pm, what are you looking forward too and hoping to see? by jp606in classicalmusic

[–]davidjwi 1 point2 points ago

I agree with js07whh that 21 looks really good. I saw ENB perform Rite of Spring a few weeks ago and was blown away by the music so am looking forward to hearing it again.

I'll probably try to catch any of the Proms that include a Tchaikovsky symphony, in particular 43.

Will probably try to catch Prokofiev's Cinderella in 52 also, but as a ballet nut I might be a bit disappointed that there won't be any choreography!

Also, was it just me or was Nicola Benedetti's face on loads of the Proms tag-photos?

Corelli's La Follia - friend suggested I listen to it and completely blown away by davidjwiin classicalmusic

Wow - I just listened to Vitali's Chaconne. Wow.

Corelli's La Follia - friend suggested I listen to it and completely blown away by davidjwiin classicalmusic

[–]davidjwi[S] 0 points1 point ago

Any suggestions for similar pieces to listen to (in particular the quicker energetic sections)?

I'm choreographing a ballet piece for a gala later this year and this music fits my choreographic style pretty well - only problem is that my friend choreographed a piece to extracts from La Follia last year so I can't really (or rather would prefer not to) use the same music. Any help?

Mathematicians like beautiful proofs, but what is the ugliest or most cumbersome proof you know? by shai-hulud-willingin math

[–]davidjwi 2 points3 points ago

They're currently trying to formalise the proof using computer programs like Isabel and Coq. At the moment they're near completion of a formalisation of the Odd Order Theoreom (a huge achievement in itself...)

Mathematicians like beautiful proofs, but what is the ugliest or most cumbersome proof you know? by shai-hulud-willingin math

[–]davidjwi 3 points4 points ago

I would disagree - sure the proof is mammoth but some really beautiful mathematics was created entirely for this reason. There's some fascinating areas I looked at during my undergrad thesis (Amalgams and the Coset Graph) with some beautiful results that were only worked on in the context of this proof.

Humongous and probably disorganised? Yes. Ugly? No.

I don't dislike the font, per se, but absolutely hate it's inappropriate use. It's a laid-back, goofy kind of font, yet I've seen it used at conferences (I'm a CompSci PhD student) and even for a Professor's inaugural lecture!

In response to the post about Yo Yo Ma, this is how he breaks boundaries. On top of being phenomenal as a classical performer. by altsymphin classicalmusic

Lil' Buck is an insane dancer! I would love to see this performed again, alongside a classical ballerina doing the original choreography...

What weird names do you have for things? (Your dialect.) I'll use every one that's not inappropriate. by adeoluxin AskReddit

[–]davidjwi 4 points5 points ago

As in a regional dialect? Where I'm from (Northern England) we say "hyem" for home. It's pronounced like "yemm".

Eeh, are you gaanin' hyem?

I've always wondered how this works. Do you use a mirror? Doesn't the shaving cream just wash off?

I'm not wanting to rename the files though - I want to run them through a program (called qepcad) and produce the output files as .out

Recently got a Kindle. What are some good fantasy series/books? by Lunatistin Fantasy

[–]davidjwi 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad to hear that! I was just going off a few forum posts I had read a year or so ago (can't remember where) when deciding whether to read Malazan on my Kindle or in paperback form. Went for paperback, but if the kindle editions are fine then I kinda wish I went for them - those 1000+ page tomes are kinda awkward to lug around!

Recently got a Kindle. What are some good fantasy series/books? by Lunatistin Fantasy

[–]davidjwi 0 points1 point ago

Agree with the first three - quick warning though, the Malazan kindle editions are meant to be pretty bad (littered with typos etc). I've read LoTR and the WoT on Kindle and they were (mostly) okay, but I've heard the Malazan series are really bad.

But you should still read Malazan - those books are amazing!

The books for April have been chosen! by thewretchedholein bookclub

[–]davidjwi 1 point2 points ago

I'm exactly the same - Paradise Lost seems such a key text that I feel I should read it but have never got around to it.

Also, as someone who adored the His Dark Materials trilogy when I was younger I'm intrigued to see how Pullman used PL in his works. Maybe I'll reread the HDM trilogy after PL and see if I gain something different from it.
