With no mechanic experience, no money to spend on repairs, and hours of research... I replaced the headgaskets on my Subaru 2.5RS by badfishnowin DIY

[–]darien_gap 11 points12 points ago

Just a general observation about DIY, nothing short of a revolution IMO... this repair would never have happened without the Internet. Technically it's a reduction of GDP to do one's own work, yet so efficient in much more important ways (GDP is such a bullshit metric). What I wonder is whether economists have attempted to calculate the positive economic impact of social-enabled learning/productivity. And if so, is it more of a benefit to mankind than all of the productivity that is destroyed by hours idled away on Facebook (and reddit, for that matter)?

Radical Life Extension Is Already Here, But We're Doing it Wrong: Life spans of several hundred years are bound to be socially disruptive in one way or another; if we're headed in that direction, it's best to start teasing out the difficulties now. by ProfessorGalactusin singularity

Must add policy and institutional evolution to the mix, too. In fact, it's arguably more important. For instance, if we can manage to coordinate action and give our fisheries a rest, then they could be sustainably fished indefinitely. But without coordinated mutual restrictions, they'll lose their ability to provide daily protein to much of the world's coastal populations, possibly forever.

Musk has stated this as SpaceX's goal, so one way or another, it'll happen.

If you find an 18 year old who doesn't know that a mechanic fixes cars and an engineer designs them, congratulations, you've found an idiot 18 year old. The engineering profession has plenty of respect actually.

My wife makes fun of me for drinking white wine because she says it isn't "manly," so I got a set of these. by bigwilliestylezin funny

[–]darien_gap 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, and this will sound harsh, but it's a class issue. In the context she was raised in, she's right, it's not manly. There, you've got your nuclear comeback if you want to use it. I don't recommend it though. Stag Goblet is pretty damn manly, and would be appreciated by her beer-only kinfolk.

It's as though there are three tiers of response:

  1. Scientifically illiterate: Correlation = proof!!

  2. Scientifically literate lay public: Correlation != causation!! Worthless!

  3. Scientist: Correlation = datapoint that, to some degree, does or doesn't support the hypothesis, or sheds new light. Use to refine future studies. Do controlled experiments when possible.

I'm an adult who hates my parents for mature reasons. What sentiments from your teenage years did you expect to outgrow, but didn't? by HonestyTimeThrowawayin AskReddit

[–]darien_gap 0 points1 point ago

A variation on this theme:

The transition into adulthood begins the moment you realize your parents aren't perfect. The transition is complete when you have completely forgiven them for for not being perfect.

For some, this transition begins at age 4. For others, it never ends, even into their elder years.

Something I'v been wondering a lot about lately... If yours is the majority view among Christians, then where is the mass outrage? Don't non-fanatical Christians realize that their entire religion is being sullied by these assholes? I'm not talking about the apologist comment here and there on Facebook, I'm talking about counter-protests in the streets. The rest of us take the silence to mean quiet agreement, letting the freaks say out loud what the rest of you are thinking but are too polite to say in public. I feel as though the only people who can quell the hatred among fanatics of any religion are moderates of the same religion. Is there any organized concerted effort to make this happen?

I always wondered if Gerry Rafferty was making this mistake (the lyric in "Right Down the Line"), or if he was using two different metaphors.

I had a boss who actually did the quote sign with his fingers while he was talking, and almost always just for emphasis, for things that really didn't need to be in quote marks. It drove me nuts.

So I started calling him T-Rex. When he asked why, I did the little quote sign, wiggling fingers, and said, "see? T-Rex."

For a few days, everybody in the office started laughing and said T-Rex every time he did it, and then he stopped forever, permanently cured of his finger quote for non-quotes gesturing.
