TROPHY CASE

[Damage] Can damage over time spells crit? by daevricin Diablo3Strategy

[–]daevric[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's not what I'm seeing. I'm running Splinter Darts and Pestilence right now, and the only time I ever seen yellow critical numbers is if it's on the target I'm actually attacking directly with the darts. Even in humongous groups of enemies that all have Pestilence on them, where you'd expect to see at least one crit here and there.

Bench-clearing scuffle at Fenway after Morales plucks Scott in the leg by a_happy_tigerin baseball

[–]daevric 1 point2 points ago

It was his original comments about Sox fans, Fenway, and the team when he was in Baltimore that made me hate him. I'd consider comments made to the media about baseball to be "baseball-related". The other stuff I brought up I learned about later and only added to it.

I definitely understand opposing team fans disliking our players, but at least Ortiz isn't a terrible person. He doesn't go around berating other players and teams. He's also not a redneck douchebag who loudly proclaims his denial that Obama was born in the US, among other asinine things he likely picked up from watching too much Fox News while polishing his gun collection.

Then there's Luke Scott.

Honestly, I liked the Rays and wanted them to do well right up until they signed him this past offseason. His presence alone is enough to make me hate the team as long as they're willing to give him a contract.

I can't seem to find the full interview now. The best I can find is this quote:

"To be honest with you, he said something that was definitely unsuitable for TV. I didn't like it," Upton said. "I think the people that have been around me know that it’s tough for me to get there, but he sent me there tonight. I think the people that have been around me know that it’s tough for me to get there, but he sent me there tonight."

Asked if it was racial, Upton said, "I don't know. It's over with."

from here (and a few other places that are carrying it, too).

I'm not a huge fan of Upton, but there's no reason he should have been singled out for what happened last night. I agree that if it was racial, that's inexcusable. Some intense heckling is to be expected in a situation like that, but that's definitely over the line, and it could have been directed elsewhere anyway.

The bad blood had kind of subsided over the last few years, it seemed. I really feel like Luke Scott going to the Rays made it a whole lot worse almost instantaneously.

And according to Upton himself, nothing was thrown at him other than words.

After how much Scott has publicly blasted the Red Sox to the media in the last year or two, I wouldn't complain if we hit him with a pitch every time he came up to the plate. He's the only player in the game that I can honestly say I despise for baseball-related reasons.

[–]daevric 3 points4 points ago

Ball is in play, unless the fielder, after making a legal catch, falls into a dugout or other out-of-play area, in which case the ball is dead.

What about this last part? It seems to disqualify it. I agree that at the time of the catch it was legal, but that part of the rule seems to indicate that if the fielder lands out of play, which he clearly did here.

DAE wish the Jeweler and the Blacksmith would pull the appropriate resources from your Stash? by pappagorgioin Diablo

[–]daevric 18 points19 points ago

I doubt they'll make this change. Obviously Diablo and WoW are two different games, but the concept of a stash vs. a character's bank really aren't that different. There's been a minority of people asking to be able to complete quests (etc.) using items in the bank for years, but it hasn't happened. The concept of having to make a choice between carrying items in your limited inventory vs. storing them in your relatively large stash is considered a meaningful decision (and I agree for tangibility reasons like you state), and thus unlikey to change.

I don't think that applies to D3. If it did, then Fortune shrines wouldn't do anything unless you zoned into a dungeon, which would defeat the purpose. You might be thinking of WoW, where raid boss loot is supposedly determined when the instance is generated. Or whatever source you read assumed that D3 worked the same as WoW.

My first death in Diablo III (even including the beta), and to date my only death on normal mode on any character, was in the grassy area post-Skeleton King on release day. I found a new event, started it up, and had to kill a bunch of those big trees, one of which was named. They all died, loot dropped, I ran in to pick it all up, and exploded. Turns out, those bastards are complete bastards even after they die.

2h or 1h + offhand for wizard? by Milf_Masterin Diablo

[–]daevric 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. The slower the weapon, the better DPM (damage per mana) you get. You do, however, lose some effect from +damage jewelry, though, as those add damage per attack, which works better with spamming low-mana-cost abilities with fast attack speeds.

[–]daevric 1 point2 points ago

Really big, slow 2h weapons definitely pay off for WDs who rely a lot on Pestilence (among others). There's definitely a noticeable difference in damage, and you can really feel the attack speed difference when you start spamming primary skills like Splinter Darts.

In my experience, don't bother trying to sell rares with poorly rolled stats. Particularly early on, when rares may only have 4-5 stats, you can easily get one that's pretty terrible. If it doesn't have at least one primary stat, preferably vit + one more, it likely won't even show up in a large portion of players' searches. Vendor it and save yourself the time and hassle.

It's also worth pointing out that hardcore characters have a separate stash and gold pool from normal characters. The idea is that hardcore characters must earn their gear and progression solely by playing hardcore.

[WD] This is my build and I am currently in Act III Hell. Half the skills I use are not found in any of you guys' builds. by lap35in Diablo3Strategy

[–]daevric 2 points3 points ago

Is Fetish Sycophants really worth it? I appreciate you'll be casting bombs and locusts very regularly but at only 3% how often do you find you get a Fetish?

I'm only on Act III NM right now, so it's possible that this will go down in later difficulties when I can't stand still and spam as much. However, I'm using a very slow weapon, and still often find myself with 2-3 Fetishes at a time. They last a long time, and for some reason don't seem to be killed as often as other minions. I don't see it lasting into Inferno, but for at least Nightmare, it's a pretty solid passive.

One of the true rarities in baseball: when the losing pitcher throws a no-no by DaSemonatorin baseball

[–]daevric 1 point2 points ago

Neat! I've always wondered if this has happened, but always keep forgetting to look it up. Apparently it has happened twice if you only include a single pitcher. The link from the OP is the only one where it was a nine-inning no-hit loss. In the other case, it was the visiting team's pitcher who threw a no-hitter through 8 innings, but because the other team scored 4 runs (!) prior to the 9th inning, there was no bottom of the 9th, so it doesn't count as a complete game no-hitter.

This might be a dumb question, but... how does it work when teams switch Minor League affiliates? by stabbedabbein baseball

[–]daevric 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if the offensive production of pitchers has gone down since the DH rule was applied to the minor leagues. It seems like there's a bit of a competing goals situation here. If pitchers have to bat and run the bases in the minors, there's more chance that they could get hurt. On the other hand, spending the first 2-4+ years of their professional career never having to hold a bat, then being thrust onto an NL roster pretty much guarantees a lack offensive usefulness which still hurts the tea, even if they might have been okay at it with some experience against minor league pitching.

Presumably owners have decided that the chance of losing value due to potential injury is of greater harm to the organization than the guaranteed diminished production from the 9-spot. I just can't help but wonder if that's a fair assessment.

This might be a dumb question, but... how does it work when teams switch Minor League affiliates? by stabbedabbein baseball

[–]daevric 2 points3 points ago

It definitely makes sense for it to be this way. It's often the case that players on a rehab assignment might just need to get in plate appearances before heading back to the majors, but the team doesn't want them to get injured on defense, especially if they're a middle infielder.

Its official... Scott Podsednik is back in the majors, batting 8th for BOS against BAL by noreaster2011in baseball

[–]daevric 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but only in the 8th inning. He pinch hit for Marlon Byrd on the top of the 8th because there was a righty pitching, and apparently we're better off with Scott Podsednik holding a bat. I guess.
