Reminders for Lion by norskbenin applehelp

[–]dacracot 5 points6 points ago

It is part of iCal in Lion, albeit not as feature rich. Launch iCal and under the View menu choose Show Reminders. If you have signed up for iCloud it will stay synched with you other devices.

If my iPhone is browsing on my company's wifi, can they identify me? by KevlarYarmulkein iphone

They will have your MAC address. This alone does not point you out as the network user, but if they seek to find you out, that MAC address will be proof that it was you.

Why do we favor photovoltaic over stirling engines for converting solar power into usable energy? by dacracotin energy

[–]dacracot[S] 0 points1 point ago

I ditto this. I've used refrigerators with original parts that were 25 years old. The only problems was having to defrost the freezer because it worked so well. I don't know how so many on this thread can say stirling engines are unreliable when they are so scarce. Have you even touched one?

Are you saying a 15kW system would require a 38 foot dish?

What about a small scale system for a single home? A 15 kW system should be able to run an air conditioner (AC). You would only need it to be as reliable as the AC parts. The compressor on my AC is a piston system, and its still going strong after 15 years.

See I think the problem is that everyone want to build that gigawatt system that isn't practical when a kilowatt system is.

First, of course you would not try to scale it down to a portable device, that would be ridiculous. But for a A/C unit for instance, the electricity is converted back to mechanical for the compressor and fans. The loss via conversion is from electrical to mechanical.

Moving parts vs. no moving parts would be a factor in cost over the lifetime of the system.

Silly me, I expected more from the AP. Who are their overlords?

But heliostat plants don't scale down well like stirling engines (or photovoltaics for that matter). I could easily put a 5hp setup on my roof, with a stirling. I doubt a heliostat would scale well.

What is that rolling fabric measurement thingy called? by dacracotin AskReddit

[–]dacracot[S] 0 points1 point ago

YES! What are those called? Where did you find the picture? It might even work with just one wheel.

If the genders were reversed how creepy and wrong would this be? by theoretic_leein AskReddit

Alcohol probably had a lot to do with it, at least I hope so.

I'm curious what your first conversation with your roommate when like after this incident.

Men who refuse sex on principles are a rare breed unfortunately. Good for you for saying no. You aren't the only one, but we (yes I believe I would have said no too) get treated so poorly for this good behavior, seldom will anyone bring it up.

What is that rolling fabric measurement thingy called? by dacracotin AskReddit

[–]dacracot[S] 0 points1 point ago

No, this thing would fit in the palm of your hand. It looks like one of those clickers that they use to count customers at Costco, but instead of a button it has two wheels that touch on the side. As you roll those wheels on the fabric, it counts up the yardage.

No, it's mechanical. Two rollers that you pull the fabric through that count up the yards.

How about when the land runs out? by GIVEMEREPLAYin Libertarian

[–]dacracot 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes, it is the natural order of things. It just hasn't come to this point previously in human history because we had not yet "filled" the planet.

How about when the land runs out? by GIVEMEREPLAYin Libertarian

[–]dacracot 0 points1 point ago

You are missing the point. To escape your current landlord (whatever form that takes) you must be able to escape to a new homeland that is not controlled by anyone but yourself.

[–]dacracot 0 points1 point ago

But that isn't how it will play out, now is it. The powerful will survive and the poor through serfdom. The others, soon there will be no others.

[–]dacracot 0 points1 point ago

Conceptually yes, but practically. Tell me the steps you and 20 of your closest friends would complete to create your own homeland.

Inflation is Quiet, So Why are People Still Feeling its Pain? by besttrousersin Economics

[–]dacracot 3 points4 points ago

That is what it looks like statistically, but in my case I got a 1.2% raise but now have to pay 5% more into my pension. This net 3.8% loss in wages will not show up in the medial income statistics.

Libertarian view on Sports by GhostSonatain Libertarian

[–]dacracot 0 points1 point ago

The primary example is the NFL which lobbies congress to receive perks and exemptions for regulatory laws that should not exist under libertarian ideology. So your point is the point exactly. Today, everything seems to be taken to the federal level even though it should not. Under a libertarian system it would not unless it was a law suite regarding interstate commerce, a potentially likely scenario for the NFL.
