As to what the average Chinese citizen thinks? China is a giant country, and people naturally have varying viewpoints. Some think he is a wonderful person that did great things for Dalian and Chongqin, he is just a victim of political enemies. Others see him as a vain bastard with his fingers in every corruption pie he claims to have gotten rid of. There are people with more mixed feelings and people who think something else all together, and I would imagine, people who don't care.

If you are interested in the CCP's feelings on this, they've fed a bunch of stories to major papers in China, you could probably find translations of their articles, or if you would like, you could message me for a translation.

Finally, if you are looking for a (very) quick primer on modern Chinese history that may give you some context for this situation (it wont be able to comment on the finer modern political nuances, mind you), I would recommend finding a copy of Rana Mitter's "Modern China: A Very Short Introduction"
