How do you address husband and wife? by und3r_Scorein LearnJapanese

[–]cowhead 0 points1 point ago

Check that, thanks! I'm a scientist and I always... er, almost always, include such cautionary tidbits in my writing. Thanks for calling me out on that. But I don't have any counter-examples in this case. Can you give us a counter-example? (stem plus 合う not reflecting an interchange of some kind)

Huge collection of Acapella tracks! [x-post r/opendirectories] by Mindmasterin DJs

[–]cowhead 1 point2 points ago

Dude! This is so cool! Thank you! And, at least for me, just to let the less tech-savy in on the game... the link gives you just the A's. But all you have to do is replace the "A" in the URL with whatever letter you seek.

For example: http://zacland.org.nyud.net/accapella/ACAPELLAS-A/ is what you get when you click on this link.

http://zacland.org.nyud.net/accapella/ACAPELLAS-C/ gives you all the tunes starting with C (and so on)

I need to know what type of HDD to buy for a MacBook Pro A1286 (3rd Gen). Please help! by wimpykidin applehelp

[–]cowhead 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it costs a little more, but... no heat, super fast, no moving parts to break (it's too early in the game to know for sure, but guesses are that SSHDs will be much longer lived than their spinning disk counterparts),if, when, my Macbook HD dies, I will definitely go Solid State.

Edit: Oops, forgot, there was a thread here just a couple of days ago on SSHDs. Check that out.

99 senators haven't come out against CISPA, and they're rushing a vote for as soon as they come back from Memorial Day recess. Today is the last day before they leave. They need to know we're not okay with this. by fightforthefuturein politics

Oooo, Oooo, I finally did my part and I'm so proud. Can I just take a moment to pet myself? I actually called from Japan (using SKYPE so it cost me almost nothing) and informed my Texas senator's rep where my home town is in Texas, and that I vehemently oppose this bill. The rep said he would be sure to pass that on. At that point, I realized I had nothing left to lose, so I also said, "I'm serving here in the US military to fight for our freedoms, in particular, the freedom to privacy, against big government oppression, and neither I nor anyone else in the military will be happy if this bill passes" That seemed to strike a cord!

I was actually asking the difference between stem + 合っている and 〜ている (not 〜てある) 〜てある is roughly "has been done" (it has been written here) 〜ておく is not written with a kanji (as far as I know) and is roughly "will have been done" or "going to do", so it has a future time sense to it. (I'm gonna write it down)

If you are into linguistics at all, the use of kanjis or not is interesting as it reflects the degree of grammaticalization of the structure. The more grammaticalized the structure, the less the tendency to use the original kanji from which it was derived; much as "gonna" replaced "going to" in everyday English speech.

Edit: So, I learned that stem + 合う always implies some sort of interchange, and so often is accompanied by おたがいに

[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what are the biggest misconceptions in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

Genes are only used for reproduction. If you don't want to have (any more) babies, you can ingest DNA mutagens etc. without concern. Some really smart people believe this; graduates from Ivy league Law Schools etc.

[–]cowhead 3 points4 points ago

Thanks for taking the time for that! I'm still a little confused as I thought it was part of a larger pattern (verb stem+あっています). And I noticed the kanji (合う) isn't used in these examples, indicating perhaps it's a different form?

  1. お互いの語学力を高めあっています

  2. お互いに変な声で囁きあっています

3.難民キャンプ内でお互いにそのことについて教えあっています。 And here is an example using 'speaking' but again, they didn't use the kanji for 合う。。。

4.この死に至るウイルスについて話しあっています。

Could it be there is something else going on?

Jane is in a monogamous relationship, but sleeps with Joe. Jane is obviously cheating, but is there also a word for what Joe does? by brauchenin answers

[–]cowhead 0 points1 point ago

"In medieval literature, the "kukewold" was almost universally scorned instead of the adulterous wife, in a sense much like the 1980's nerd (but without the intellectual ability), they were viewed as worthless due to their physical stature and somehow at fault for the adulterous act. The word was chosen in an attempt to connote scorn."

This is it, yes, exactly. Though no longer really used in English, it surfaces as "cabrón" in Spanish. Thanks!

Unrelated to OP's question but can you explain the use of あっていますin your example. I've never understood the difference between 話していますand 話あっています。

On a related note, there is a derogatory term in Spanish for Jane's partner (the guy being cheated on). I can't remember the term but I found it interesting that it existed.

Actually, all five of those are perfectly valid statements depending upon the needs of your students. Source: MA in applied psycho-linguistics and fifteen plus years of teaching TEFL.

Edit: I forgot to answer the OP's question: English Grammar, Rodney Huddleston is a gold standard.

I think this is really good, and a cool concept. But.... I know you did it on purpose but that slight beat mismatch on the clap (-like sound) during the Cash segments just drives me crazy. Maybe it's just me though.... I wouldn't worry about it unless someone else chimes in with the same nitpick.

North Carolina Pastor calls for concentration camps for gays and execution by starvation by jstalinin politics

[–]cowhead -2 points-1 points ago

The sperm can live inside the woman for quite some time. You can actually have sex just before the period, the woman can then get the period, and yet can still become pregnant. Now, this is rare and the solution is simple: Pull out! Do you know that the success rate for pulling out is over 80 percent? And, it's likely that this would be higher if people did a better job of timing. So is the condom worth that extra 10 percent safety margin? (obligatory 'of course, disease blah blah' disclaimer)
