Spreadsheet question: When I copy a cell saying '8/31/10', how come it pastes as '40421'? by commentjudgein AskReddit

So I would convert a cell to 'text' format in order to do numerical computations on it? I would think a clever program like gnumeric could tell differences between dates even without having to convert them, instead of creating thousands of little mousetraps across my spreadsheet should a layman make the mistake of converting them to text.

Yeah, I'm just angry at my own ignorance.

well 6/17/10 is 40346 and 6/9/10 is 40338. You're right. It's the benchmark date.

shit.

Secondly, when I convert from 'date' to 'text', this is when I lose the date and get a 5 digit number. Why in the flying f#$% would gnumeric think I want this?

..you... you did it? No witty remarks about how this reveals a personal shortcoming of mine? No angry comments about me violating the spirit of ask reddit? No 'get your own wallpapers' lecture?

Huh. Thanks!

I see that scilab, sage, and matlab and octave exist, but I am hoping someone with experience using these different programs could opine.

Is there a reddit for computer repair questions? by master_of_nonein AskReddit

http://superuser.com/ is a reddit for computer repair questions. I am not 100% sure they do hardware questions (most seem like software questions), but I may be wrong.

0% facts. 100% lazy mental short cuts. You couldn't have more completely confirmed my suspicion.

Unless you recoil from facts like kryptonite because of a medical condition. If that's the case, my apologies. Go on, I'm begging you. Do you have any substantive response to anything I've said at all?

Exactly! You've provided the vague, blurry picture of politics that someone might see through a foggy telecope from 100,000 miles away. If you recede that far back because you are desperate to set a false equivalence, you are welcome to. But that's a cop-out.

But if you pay attention to the details-

  • substantial numbers of democrats opposed the war, and those that voted for it voted in a political climate dominated by opportunistic republican fearmongering. (glaze over this)

  • if it weren't for republican deregulation during the 2000s, no stimulus package would have been necessary (make sure you glaze over this, too)

  • health care reform lowers the deficit, democrats support, republicans don't (boring!)

  • financial regulation intended to prevent future bailouts is supported by democrats and is primarily opposed by republicans. (ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz )

  • Bush tax cuts which added billions to the deficit (snnnnnnooooooooooorrrrre)

... but that requires thinking. Too hard. Without the Republican wars, the Republican economic downturn, or the Republican tax cuts, we would not be facing deficits, and we would be able to fund every single social program Democrat or Republican. Giving equal blame to Obama/Democrats for a problem that was nearly a decade in the making, a decade when they didn't have power, is just lazy and sloppy.

Its called looking at facts and reasons and coming to an accurate picture of reality. You are interested in a lazy false equivalence.

I don't think it's "dry." Humorous moments shouldn't necessarily be coupled with an emphasis that signals "HEY IDIOT! THIS. HERE. THIS IS HUMOR!" because that wipes out a whole category of absurdity that depends on its being subtle. Subtlety doesn't make it "dry," because frequently the absurdity is understated while the characters are themselves very animated. Spaghett! for instance is absurd but not dry. And lots of the episode where the one of the Cinco Brothers goes on trial.

I also don't think people with short attention spans are necessarily going to be thinking at a sufficient meta-level to appreciate what's going on, because even though the absurdity is instant, you won't be aware of it unless you've made some sort of investment.

It's called context. Your comment didn't have it (a vague false equivalence). His did (specific differences that shatter the equivalence).

It's time to admit that the false equivalence is just a path-of-least resistance device that's easier than actually thinking.

but saying something like this does nothing to enable us to judge the proportionality correctly, and just lets the "equal responibilty" claim hang there. In its own way, a false equivalence is just as much a distortion as blaming Obama outright.
