Men of Reddit, what is the most bromantic thing your friend has ever done for you? by givinatorin AskReddit

[–]climbsurfski 166 points167 points ago

Actually, this is a tale of bromance that I delivered.

Matt and I jumped into the open top kayaks and decided to explore the Tampa bay intercoastal water way. There were a few islands nearby, we were slightly drunk, and the only reasonable option was to reach and explore these islands. We paddle for a good half mile until we pulled the kayaks ashore on one such island. Being prepared, I had brought sandals with me because I knew the perils of exploring beach areas with vegetation. We walk around and, sure enough, Matt had gotten caught in a patch of sand barbs. These little fuckers dug into his feet and there was no way of escaping the natural mine field.

Therefore I piggybacked Matt back to the kayaks since I had shoes on to continue our journey. Bromantic.

What would happen to the world if people could have extended life spans? by climbsurfskiin AskReddit

First of all, think of how difficult it would be for younger people to get jobs! You know that the retirement age would be higher so jobs just wouldn't hire too much.

This has really inspired me. I love how roast beef resembles the American Dream.

Meh, I'm American so I'm a little biased.

[–]climbsurfski 4 points5 points ago

No, I think the use of invasive military force to acheive these means are what demonized Germany. Does the US strive to be the world leader in culture and economy? Of course! But, we've just gone about achieving a dominant status in a more subtle way than steamrolling through Europe. We still use invasive force, if we're talking about the Middle East, but I think its still comparing apples to oranges if we're talking about the role of nationalism in each of these situations.

Correct, sir. I know the difference between HRE and RE.

Definitely not an expert here, but it's common knowledge that Hitler called Germany the Third Reich whenever he assumed control. Reich was the term previous German rulers had used for "empire" originating with the Holy Roman Empire (1st Reich). As a side note, the 2nd Reich was applied to the unification of Germany following the collapse of the HRE. So by Hitler's use of the term, it was obvious that he wanted to create an empire- likely one which rivaled the Roman Empire.

Assuming creating that kind of empire was his plan, he would have created a state that was idealogically superior to other nations by German standards. Had Hitler taken Moscow, he likely would have invaded the Middle East next to regain control of oil- also likely spreading down to Present-day Isreal and Turkey as well. At some point I would assume the rest of the World would come to an armistice once Hitler/Japan had gotten powerful enough.

In short, I believe his plans were control of the world economy and world culture and his winning would have unfortunately made Germany the dominant world power in both.

EDIT: Lack of sleep made me believe Isreal existed before it really did.

Why do I work here, again? by climbsurfskiin self

[–]climbsurfski[S] 0 points1 point ago

I started to be confused, then I looked at your post history- you can't be out of high school yet. I would have been very excited to have a job this lax when I was your age! Then I realized that only work begats success. I majored in engineering because I want to earn enough money to live the life I want to live for the rest of my life, but along the way I learned that it takes more than just a degree to be successful. The lazy ones fall behind and only the hard working or incredibly lucky succeed. Yes, I want more work because I realize that I am an incredible asset and only through work can others see my potential and pay me higher.

Any chemical engineers that can answer some questions?? by engcmecin engineering

[–]climbsurfski 1 point2 points ago

Hopefully you'll see this, but I'd like to point out that you have plenty of options as a ChE- go through with it!

I went through the same thought process you did...kindof. I on the other hand loved the hands-on parts of working an internship in a chemical plant. But I see what you mean- most entry level ChE's are going to be hired to Gulf Coast or middle of nowhere (I had one job offer in Midland, TX...). This happened to be a problem because I'm a huge outdoors person (knocking out the Gulf Coast options) and because I'm single (not going to find anybody in a small town). So therefore, I took a different option- Environmental Engineering.

Environmental jobs aren't going to pay as well for an entry level, I'll tell you that right now- but there's always room for improvement. The other downside is inconsistent work- and that really blows. But on the other hand, I'm doing way more design than I figured I would in a plant job, you can live nearly anywhere, the jobs are mostly in the big cities, the job has been ~15% job site work- meaning you get to hang out outside, there's travel, and every job is a whole new ballgame.

I absolutely miss working in a plant, and I might eventually go back to that- but for the time being this is the best option for what my interests are and I would recommend pursuing this option if you don't want to go through additional schooling to change what career you pursue after undergrad.

Dude, thank you for asking. You're gonna need a jet ski for some of them.

My primary turf is Ft. Loudon Lake, Farragut side. If you were to start at Farragut Marina and follow the river upstream to campus, you'll first encounter Sheep's Head cliff jumping on your right. There's a 35-40 foot route on the far left of the cliff which is where I fell. That's probably 5.10c/d- be-fucking-ware of loose rock.

Continue your journey upstream for a mile and you'll come to a long expanse of limestone cliff up to 25 ft height on your right relatively near the Admiral Farragut frisbee golf park. Tons of good routes here, but still be careful. Rock quality is better.

Continue upstream and you'll encounter some more cliffs on your right below a housing development. Not too good, but there's probably a route or two there.

Continue upstream and you'll go under the Pellissippi bridge. A little past that and you'll find a very difficult limestone route on your left. Not too much other climbing at that spot.

Continue upstream and you'll come to a very tall cliff that Bearden/West people use for cliff jumping. Good potential here, but the slabilicious nature of the cliff makes things difficulte.

NOW you get to campus. Of course you know where Cherokee Bluffs are- they're across the river from Sequioa Hill's dog park! I've led sport from the water here, but have found various routes along those cliff lines. This is where the water quality is shit and the underwater rocks are slippery. Still, there's tons here but you have to be a pretty strong climber to get most of it. Watch out for boats!

Last, you get to the cliff across the river from UT's Ag campus. There's a lot of potential there, but I've only been there once. The time I did go, I found an ancient nut from somebody leading trad a long time ago who apparently got it stuck. There's probably at least one route over 50 feet that can be done- where I found the nut was probably a 5.9.

And my project? In Lenior City. On the down low because its the best cliff I know (sandstone!) and don't want people getting my route first lol. But if you're really interested, ask any Lenior City kids you know- its kinda a popular spot.
