TROPHY CASE

Found this on an episode of The Powerpuff Girls by Flutterpiesparklein funny

I have never heard "oblique" used in that sense. It's always been a math word to me. "Subtle" might be more common.

For me it was a general feeling of "these stories are the same, why do I think one is true and one is just a story?"

No, because that's when ethics starts to become a problem. Also, financial situations can change very quickly.

Saw the Black Keys for the first time. Just wanted to share a photo from one of the best shows I've ever seen. by darin_gleadain Music

[–]chula198705 0 points1 point ago

I am SO jealous. I just recently had to use The Black Keys on the "worst concert you attended" thread because the sound was messed up and nobody could hear them. The audience was chanting "turn it up! turn it up!" for the first ten minutes It made me really sad because I love this band and was sure they would put on a great show. I'm glad I was right in the end!

What do you do if you're in public somewhere, like on campus, and it's time to dump it out? You don't use the public sink to rinse it do you?! Or does it not need to be emptied that often?

Forget all the great concerts you've been to, what is the WORST concert you've seen? by scadsofemotionin AskReddit

[–]chula198705 0 points1 point ago

It almost makes me sad to post this, but... The Black Keys. I saw them at Summerfest last year and it was the first time a concert has not been loud enough. It was as though they sound-checked ONLY for the 5-6 member portion of their set (about 2 songs) and didn't bother sound-checking the 2-member majority of their set. It was so quiet I could hear every word of the conversation behind me. For the first 10 minutes of their set, the audience was chanting TURN IT UP! TURN IT UP! Nothing happened though. It completely ruined what should have been a fantastic show. Florence + the Machine and Cage the Elephant went before them and they were both awesome. I was very dissapointed.

Computer Science Major + Biology Minor, good idea? by Ispiroin biology

[–]chula198705 1 point2 points ago

Looking at the school you're going to, Biology looks like the best option (otherwise I'd suggest a Genetics major). However, at the moment there is no "small stuff" in genetics. The easy stuff like transplanting glowing genes has been figured out already, so now we're studying things like interactions between genes and the study of the entire genome - very complicated stuff. A major in biology is enough to get you an entry level position somewhere that works with genetic engineering, but to really be involved you would most likely need to complete a masters or phd.

Computer Science Major + Biology Minor, good idea? by Ispiroin biology

[–]chula198705 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure what you mean about being able to do gene therapy and genetic engineering. That is a very, very complicated field that requires seriously in-depth knowledge of genetics and expensive equipment that is not available to hobbyists. Generally it is advanced degree holders that work on gene therapies and gene engineering. It is definitely not something you could do as a side project at home. If you do have a strong passion towards the subject, I would strongly consider looking into the field more in-depth, if only because web development and gaming is more easily learned and practiced in free time.

If you don't intend to work in a biological field, I think a broader introduction to many fields might serve you better - intro courses in chemistry, bio, physics, maybe some anthropology if that's available, etc. If you just want to take the courses for personal interest, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to complete a full minor, which would most likely require more than 5 classes and would require advanced upper level courses - not really a good idea if you just have a passing interest and aren't interested in it as a career.

However, it is very possible to major and get a career in something that uses both biology AND computer science. A minor in biology is definitely not enough to play around with genetic engineering at home - it's incredibly complicated - but computers+biology is a hugely important field and tons of research is being done with it currently. I see that WPI has a "Bioinformatics & Computational Biology" major available, which is definitely along those lines.

In any case, your best bet would be to discuss this with an academic advisor at your school. They will be familiar with this type of question and will be able to guide you in the right direction depending on what you want to do eventually.

Reddit, what was your first car & do you miss it? by scadsofemotionin AskReddit

[–]chula198705 1 point2 points ago

My grandma gave me her old burgundy (inside and out!) 1990 Honda Civic in 2006 after my grandpa died. The thing only had 60k on it because it was mostly towed behind their RV. So many things were wrong with it or just completely outdated though - broken AC, no tape or CD player (radio only!), and the cables that connected the battery would frequently disconnect from the battery and shut the car off while I was driving, and would not be able to restart because I was still in "D" and the gear shift would jam. I finally got sold it (for $200!) and bought a "new" car after it stopped dead at a toll booth in Chicago traffic and wouldn't restart AND stopped while I was left-turning in an intersection with cars coming not too far off. It also leaked from every window and the defogger didn't work, so in the summer rain I would have to drive with my windows down. I called it my Flintstones car. The only reason I miss it is because it was my first car and it provided me with entertaining stories for my friends.

Dear redditors, what's the most common error that foreigners do cooking your country dishes? by MrGestorein Cooking

If you cook your hot pocket in the sleeve then allow it to rest approximately 1-2 minutes prior to biting in (it's tough, I know), you will never again suffer from lava-tongue or frostbite of the mouth.

My best friend worked at Applebees in high school and college. I always hated the food but our friends liked to visit each other at work, so we had to go. To justify spending money there, I would take utensils, cups, and small plates. I built up a nice supply of steak knives and ceramic ramekins over the years, and I haven't been back since he moved.

Nope, the article says they hadn't been to his house in a while.

They had not visited the house for a year and a half and it must have taken them about 12 hours to make the journey.

Google probably knows more than I do re: events in England. I think the Wisconsin one happens annually. I also heard that the UN declared 2012 the Year of the Bat, so there is probably more stuff going on than usual this year.
