/r/vegan, do you consider non-fairtrade chocolate to be vegan? AKA does potential use of slave labor go against vegan ethics? by vegetarianBLTGin vegan

[–]cag0925 3 points4 points ago

If you're interested in fair trade issues, Raj Patel wrote a great book called Stuffed and Starved, in which he talks about a lot of issues surrounding the geopolitics of food. His conclusion regarding fair trade is that while the farmers get a few cents more per product, it's not significantly better for them in terms of quality of life. (Better than NOTHING, of course)

Since I'm talking up this book, I should mention that he also discusses how, in order to feed the vast number of livestock raised for consumption, first world countries (he calls them the Global North in the book) have essentially imposed monocrop culture on third world countries (especially soy), which affects their ability to produce their own food, pay fair wages, pay their debts....the list goes on.

The book isn't about the ethics of eating animals, but understanding how the current system of food production is bad for everyone -- essentially taking away the food sovereignty of dozens of other countries -- was a big factor in going vegan for me.

TL;DR: Stuffed and Starved is a great book that discusses a lot of the issues surrounding human rights and food production.

I've read that adcomms also take the letters more seriously if you waive your rights -- if you don't, they're more skeptical of any praise in the letters.

Should grad school applicants expect to be stalked on Google? by inquilinekeain GradSchool

[–]cag0925 0 points1 point ago*

Oh crap. I have a very common name and so googling me brings up a lot of hits that aren't me. Some are very obvious (I think a personal trainer is the first hit) but there are tons of cag's on Facebook who don't really keep a lid on their privacy. Idk if it is still around, but there was a Facebook group to the effect of, "cag0925 is a bitch" -- but it was a completely different person, different state, etc. Still....making me fucking nervous.

Do they also google you during the admissions process? (None of the programs I'm applying to have interviews)

Dear /r/vegan, I need some help. by radams713in vegan

[–]cag0925 6 points7 points ago

Have you spoken to a doctor about these issues? You might have some specific dietary needs or restrictions.

I am hesitant to recommend specific recipes as I don't know the specifics of your issues (and even if I did, I'm not a doctor, so I still wouldn't). However, the PPK has a bunch of soup recipes that might give you some ideas.

You might also want to check out Vegan Health and the Vegan RD for general ideas about making healthy vegan food. Hope this helps, and good luck!

I love how buns fake you out....binky, then "Oh, nope, I'm done" (0:11), politely grooming, and then HUGE JUMP.

Whenever I go to the vet I always see people whose preferred method of bunny-transport is a basket. It amazes me that the buns don't jump out (I'm sure mine would). It's very, very adorable.

Movie poster for Al Gore's Oscar winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" by crackduckin PropagandaPosters

[–]cag0925 1 point2 points ago

I said:

I'm not saying that ads and propaganda are mutually exclusive, btw, but this is really a stretch.

Your post and this poster are really not the same. Yes, there's an agenda in the IC poster, but the poster for Triumph des Willens even says "Reichsparteitagfilm der NSDAP" -- come on.

I think rawveggie's response to your comment says what I wanted to but couldn't be bothered to write:

If it was an extremely high-resolution version, or if the poster played some particular role in the popularity of the film and that was pointed towards as a reason for the submission, or if it was a rare version with a powerful juxtaposition other than the version that almost all of us have already seen, then it would have been of more interest. [....] I also think that ignoring the attempts by those of us that care about this subreddit, and attempt to keep it from being a partisan playground, is not very welcome behavior.

Finally, I would like to reiterate the sidebar: I am not voting based on my interpretation of your politics. My personal opinion is that this submission is not "interesting or insightful." Plenty of people seemed to think it was. You explicitly asked why the downvotes, so I answered (admittedly I should I have been more thorough).

Actually, had you submitted this poster or a even still from Triumph des Willens, I would have upvoted it, not because of my politics (obviously) but because it is a) an iconic propaganda film b) extremely controversial because, despite its content, it is considered one of the greatest films ever made and c) it remains highly influential because of the formal techniques developed by Riefenstahl. This film is still widely studied by historians and critics because of this paradox. That's interesting and insightful.

Movie poster for Al Gore's Oscar winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" by crackduckin PropagandaPosters

[–]cag0925 -1 points0 points ago

Because it's an advertisement for a movie. It has a very obvious agenda: getting you to buy a ticket or a DVD. (I'm not saying that ads and propaganda are mutually exclusive, btw, but this is really a stretch) I rarely downvote in this sub but I do think that this doesn't really fit here.

Ladies of reddit! I'm curious to see if the alpha/beta pua theories are true. I made a quiz about the matter. Please take this test and say your results. You may find it interesting and fun. by quizmizin relationship_advice

[–]cag0925 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't really buy into the whole alpha and beta theories at all, so maybe that seemed to me like the questions were a little unfairly written. For instance:

  1. In terms of confrontation... -He takes charge and confronts people directly. -He hides from confrontation

Obviously, everyone is going to choose the first answer, which I am guessing is alpha, and thus "confirming" the theory. However, IMO, confidence =/= "alpha," and thus the results are interpreted rather unfairly.

That said, I enjoy quizzes, so this was fun. :)

Would getting a dog help with depression? by CaveWitchin depression

I got my first bunny when I was depressed. Being responsible for a living creature is helpful -- you have to get out of the house to get supplies, there's something furry waiting for you when you get home, you get to enjoy their personality/company. I would have gotten a dog if I had been in a situation to do so. Just do your research beforehand!

Saw it, thought it was interesting until they revealed the, uh, source of the infection. Then I just thought it was too ridiculous. But hey, it was much more original than lots of other movies out there, so I'd still say it's worth a look.
