If you can accept that humans are a sexually dimorphic species, it doesn't seem unreasonable to suspect there are some gender-optimal behaviours that are best learned from the same-gendered parent. I cannot think of an example.

Research grant for Aquaponics: What would you choose to do with it? by Notmyrulname_in aquaponics

[–]burtonmkz 0 points1 point ago

This is in addition to my earlier replies, but thought if I replied to myself you'd never see it. Here is some of the mathematical modelling to which I was referring earlier for the successful prediction and control/engineering of the system. The first half is an example of modelling a system only mildly related to aquaponics (but suffices to get the point across), and the second part establishes some knowledge about the controllability of the system from collected data.

Well it seems to have worked out for you, karma-wise. See what (as you put it) "pics to circlejerk" can get you?

What would you call a genetic bias towards exhibiting a specific behaviour? "Instinct" is a good word.

Do I understand correctly then, that when Bardock_RD stated "We need a book of this", your suggestion of "Demon-Haunted World" was not in fact a suggestion for the kind of book he wanted, but the kind of book you wanted?

If humans evolved different colored skin from living in different climates, will skin colors change to some equilibrium now that people of all races live in the same areas? by YouJagaloonin askscience

[–]burtonmkz 0 points1 point ago

Yes, over thousands of years. It may not be the same adaption, though, it could be some other genetic solution resulting from the same selection pressure. Here's a paper about skin colour adaption

I evangelize about science to him because he evangelizes about the supernatural to me. I don't expect him to convert, but I do give him the gears all the same.

The fact that people can think it to be morally right to harm a child in the name of a bullshit book that was written thousands of years ago

Everybody suffers from magical thinking to a lesser or greater degree. Ignorance makes it worse. We might not be able to prevent magical thinking, but we can try to fix the ignorance part, which makes it worse. But fuck, don't you just want the people who harm children to fall down a few flights of stairs?

You could have the carbon from your body compressed into diamonds at lifegem. Have yourself made into a new family heirloom ring, so long after you're gone, generations of your progeny can still look at the ring and ponder what life was like for old Grandpa Diamondias when he was a human instead of a diamond ring djinni.

I think I may have become LESS horny since becoming an atheist. I suspect that this is because I live with far less shame and guilt stressing me out, so there's less constant sexual tension / frustration in my daily life.

That is no accident. If your religion wants to grow its followers (and which one doesn't - harvesting money is a growth industry), you want the followers to have as many children.as possible. By racheting up human sexual tension and officially disallowing all sexual outlets except penal-vaginal sex, a religion increases the average number of children of each follower, and the religion grows. Although anecdotal, it seems that by becoming an atheist you've returned to normal levels of horny, which if you were a man would probably be all the time. And women want sex just as much as men. Sex feels good and its OK to enjoy it. So there you go.
