If you go to the,right area some people espically older will understand you, but because its a very strong dialect it would be hard to understand for most people. you probally know the video with the scottish couple, that nobody understands, something like this would probally happen.

The amish use,a german thats originates from ''pfälzerisch'' the dialect spoken in the middle of western germany. Most people there speak today high german, but especially old people kept there dialect (like everywhere in germany).

there is high german (hochdeutsch), its more or less the basic german and the way you write without any dialect, you could compare it to oxford english in britain. Low german (plattdeutsch) is any kind of dialect, for example bavarian or saxon. Everyone understands high german, and most people speak it.

At first I meant to say, that germany was allready unified

you're right the kaiser was willhelm not bismark, but bismark had an extreme power and was the one who really wanted a german empire (he bribed a lot of the german kings to make his king the kaiser),after willhelm came his son I think his name was friedrich,but I am not sure, he died after 100 days of reign, after this came willhelms grandson willhelm ll.. Willhelm ll. was the one who fought ww l.. After the war he went into exil in the netherlands. The americans demanded that germany now got a republik, known as the weimarer republik. I am stopping here because the rise of hitler and the history of the third reich is far to complex to explain it now and has nithing to do with what I was trying to say.
