Why does the FAA *require* ashtrays on plans, but forbid smoking on them? by gthankin designthought

Designthought is a quiet place. (Ideally it would be a nice place too, but we are on the internet, so meanness happens.) Several upvotes (including mine) make it clear that your link is appreciated.

The maps for NC amendment one were biased, so we fixed them... by codementumin dataisbeautiful

Thank you for the link about dot grid maps!

I made the precinct graphic of the vote that was posted here last week and I definitely noticed how in looking at the graphic my mind would evenly distribute population across the whole map area even though I know most NC counties are rural. I wasn't sure the best way to combat that effect. I will try dot grids next time.

Do you happen to know the name for another technique where the size of counties (or whatever territory unit you're using) is intentionally skewed to show population? So a large county that only has 3 people living in it would instead be drawn very tiny. I've seen it a couple times, but I'm not sure if there's a name for it.

I made a map of the voting results by precinct, not just county by bouncingsoulin asheville

For those asking for higher res, the limiting factor on the size was the county borders map I used. It was small.

The data comes from this service, which let's you view votes at the precinct level.

The data is totally there to generate the map I manually made, but it wasn't quickly obvious to me if URL and JavaScript hacking could make it spit out the image I wanted. So I took screenshots and mashed them together.

The design of a signage typeface by bouncingsoulin designthought

Not to pick on you, but I'm just so tired of comments that completely ignore an article's content and simply quip about some page design flaw.

It makes sense to want to share your frustration, but it's annoying to see the same clever comments over and over:

  • For a site about typography, the fonts on this article sure render terribly in Opera 10.53.
  • You'd think a UI expert would know how to pick a color scheme that doesn't make your eyes bleed.
  • Ugh, hipster designers and their tiny fonts. I guess I'm not "cool" enough to read this article.

Yes, articles are formatted badly all the time. Use a readability bookmarklet to make it look better and then say something about the actual content.

Where is a good place to get my taxes done? by SirCheeseAlotin asheville

[–]bouncingsoul 0 points1 point ago

If you make less than $31k you can get free federal and NC filing with TurboTax. If your return is straight-froward, TurboTax is darn easy and fast to use.

If your taxes aren't simple or you want to interact with someone in person, I used AVL Tax Pros this year (my first time not doing it myself) and they were super nice and knowledgeable and fast. I was satisfied.

Inventing on principle by bouncingsoulin designthought

This talk is about the principle of providing immediate feedback in creativity tools.

The beginning of the talk demos programming tools, but if you skip to 29:07 he explores the principle with animation.
