What is the most computer illiterate thing you've witnessed? by Peppe22in AskReddit

[–]binnorie 0 points1 point ago

This was around the time when Netscape wasn't being upgraded any longer. He kept it when he couldn't view websites properly any longer. Now that he's on Firefox, what should we upgrade him to? I use Chrome or Safari - whichever one is behaving best.

For those who get just as confused as me by the first line:

"This isn't my story, but my dad's."

My poor dad used to be so tech savvy. Took me and my brother 5 years to get him to stop using Netscape. NETSCAPE!! He still uses Front Page.

edit: I don't want to grow old...

Funny...my boyfriend codes some of his own game designs, wrote me an html website overnight, and makes his own iPhone apps for shitsngiggles. Can't figure out anything WYSIWYG for his life. Repeatedly asks me for help with anything Wordpress even though I show him the code... He just can't wrap his head around the images...even though his main job is designing video games. I'll get him there. He'll have a eureka moment at some point. Aaaaand he'll realize that he didn't understand it because it's simpler than he thought it would be.

What were the days after 9/11 like? by argonautsin AskReddit

[–]binnorie 0 points1 point ago

I was underground on the PATH train when the planes hit (the subway that takes those who live in New Jersey to Manhattan). I heard people casually talking about an accident while I walked to the office I was working in that day, but didn't think anything of it. Crazy things happen in NY all the time. When I got to the office, the receptionist was inconsolably crying. I'd not worked at this place for more than a day, so I kept to myself. I sat at my desk and went online to find information on whatever this accident was. I was shocked, to say the least. I began emailing/calling as many people as I could to let them know I was OK - I was concerned that communications would go down (they did eventually). A guy I was working for called me yelling that I'd not done what he'd asked me to do - I had to tell him what had happened.

I left the office and visited my brother at work. We watched one of the buildings collapse - can't remember which one.

I left and tried giving blood, but the lines were so long people were being turned away.

I went to my father's studio to watch the news more and learned that the other tower had collapsed.

I felt useless, so I purchased two disposable cameras and walked downtown. Yes, downtown.

People were still walking north away from the tragedy, covered in grey soot and in shock. They were zombies. Others were catching the news sharing car radios and gathering in stores (who had turned their window display models on the news and upped the volume). Mostly the city was deserted. Many of the photographs I took show people acting normal, like nothing had happened. The oddest thing I saw was a man in Union Square flying a miniature kite. I didn't get a great pic of him - he looks like he's just got his hands up in the air.

I walked all the way down to Canal St. where authorities had formed a barricade. I was scared to go further.

The months following the attack were strange. Trying to wrap our minds around the fact that the towers, two of the most prominent symbols of NY's skyline, were just gone, didn't make sense. I remember one night, while heading home shortly after the accident, I was riding the Jersey City Light Rail. The Light Rail is a trolley that runs along the waterline in Jersey City directly across the Hudson from Manhattan. There was one stop, Exchange Place, that, if you were sitting in the right spot, would give the perfect view of what we had come to call Ground Zero. This particular night, the LR came to Exchange Place and the doors opened to show me this view clearly for the first time. There was smoke coming from the hole which was lit brilliantly all around. The air from the Hudson river gusted into the car and brought with it the most horrendous stench I have ever smelled. Jersey smells bad. It's chemicals mostly, but this was fleshy. I'll never forget the ominous image I saw accompanied by that smell. Ground Zero burned for ages and bodies were being found for months. Sometimes the wind would blow uptown and we'd smell it all the way up to 23rd street (I would guess further north as well).

Miraculously, I only knew one person who had died in the accident, and he was only an acquaintance. I'm extremely lucky. Recently, I worked for a brief time for the architects who are rebuilding Tower 1 and am very proud of them. It's wonderful seeing the building slowly reclaim Manhattan's skyline. I can't wait until it's finished.

Reddit, how can I get rid of my crazy flatmate? by flat_hell_throwawayin AskReddit

Yikes. No, I never got it back, unfortunately. It was an awful experience, especially since this only happened a few years ago. I'd known this woman since my 20s. This happened in my mid 30s. People certainly mature as they get older, but then a bunch of the people who were sane as kids seem to go nuts. They're making me nuts. Where's my insane asylum??? Sheesh.

Sorry it's a problem for you. She told me she was diagnosed with bi-polar spectrum and nothing else - I had no other way of defining her behavior. No amount of research I did helped me define any way of dealing with her in a healthy way - I really wanted to keep her as a friend, so I tried my best to understand her. She never had emotional breaks, nor highs/lows. She claimed to be able to keep her bi-polar very contained. I've not spoken to her in a few years. I've since met a few people who have bi-polars in their families and their descriptions of their relatives differ greatly from my roommate's behavior. I suspect, as do several friends who know her, that my old roommate isn't actually bi-polar, but I'm not a psycho-therapist and thus have no other word to use. Perhaps I'll just go with 'emotional disorder' from here on out...

Yep. Very important!

I lived with a bi-polar for a while. Fortunately, she wasn't too too bad; in fact, nothing seemed wrong at all until we'd lived together for about a year and a half. Gradually, I started noticing that things of mine were going missing such as over the counter meds, makeup and facial cleanser. I also started to notice signs that she was going into my room to use my things as well as to put dirty dish towels in my laundry, etc. The signs were very subtle - for a while I thought I was using my last Tylenol and forgetting to throw away the empty bottle or maybe my perfume had leaked out of the old plastic bottle or maybe I put the towel in my laundry and forgot. When my $900 camera disappeared from my bedroom I realized that these were not accidents and I began locking my door. It was a major blow to my ability to trust people. She was someone I'd known for a long time.

When I was starting kindergarten, my teacher gave us colored squares that corresponded to our bus numbers so that we could more easily remember what bus would take us home at the end of the day while simultaneously helping us learn colors and numbers. My square was white. The corresponding number that she'd written on the board was bus number 26. I was very proud that I already knew my bus number was 26 and didn't need reminding.

The end of the day comes and teacher has all the kids line up according to what their bus number was by calling out their colors. When she called, "White", I happily got in line because I proudly remembered. The drill was that we'd file in a single line down the hall and then join other kids who belonged on our bus in another line against the wall.

At this point in the drill, one of the ladies who worked in the school office would take over controlling our unruly wiggly selves. She stood over our line and confidently called out, "Bus Number 29! This is the line for Bus Number 29!!" No one corrected her. I KNEW I was in the right line because all my neighbors were in the line with me, so I decided I needed to step up. No one else was going to do the dirty work - it was up to me. I pleaded to her loudly, "BUT I'M WHITE!" This made the woman oddly uncomfortable. She ignored me, so I said it again louder. Her eyes fell upon me briefly - I'd been heard! But no, she looked quickly away looking utterly stressed out and kept calling my bus the wrong fucking number. Because she was ignoring my vast understanding of what my bus was, and basicly squashing my pride for such knowledge, I began to get frustrated and cry, "BUT I'M WHHIIIIITE!!! WAAAAHHH!!"

Poor lady. If she'd only seen all the little white squares pinned to some of our coats, she may have been OK. I don't think she made eye contact with me for the rest of the year.

Freedom Tower passes Empire State Building in height, is now the tallest building in NYC by mepperin news

No, it's not. But considering how slowly people are catching on, I'm worried that the name Freedom Tower might stick.

It's officially Tower 1, World Trade Center.

Heh. I once had a push/shove situation with a group of teeny tiny old Chinese ladies all trying to get on a packed train at the same time. They kind of sucked me into their happy group clamoring; me unable to physically step away even if I tried. The chicks had some strength in numbers going for them. People trying to get off the train were screwed and people trying to get out of the way couldn't move fast enough. I barked at the group of them, not expecting any of them to speak English (they'd been chit chatting loudly in Chinese on the platform). I was more just venting, not expecting any kind of result. But they all just kind of stopped, looked admonished, said sorry multiple times, stood to the side and let everything proceed normally. It was kind of a surreal moment... I said thank you (while feeling a bit stunned). All was well.

I have. Not often, but sometimes someone's attention is on something other than the people around them. Especially when they're listening to music loudly while reading a book (for example), their peripheral vision shuts down, they can't hear and, even if they're just a bit too tired, they won't notice that they're blocking someone who is trying to politely get off the train. Especially if the person causing the problem is big - they generally don't/can't see/hear/feel that they're blocking someone. I try to be sympathetic to everyone - no one wants to be squished on the train and I've probably caused my own share of problems without realizing it.

But when there's some big dude blocking 2/3rds of the door, not turning to the side, listening/dancing to his music and playing a videogame while 30 people are simultaneously trying to squeeze on/off the train at 42nd street in the short amount of time that the doors are open...Nope. No patience. litlmutt's idea wouldn't work on a person who can't hear what's going on around him/her, but a shove is really the only way to resolve such situation. When I find myself doing the shoving, I find there is a bevy of others doing the same thing to everyone around.
