As an IT guy living in Osaka. Let me tell you... almost all the jobs where you don't require business level Japanese have moved to Tokyo.

Anybody living in Japan have any advice on how to find a job and live their permanently? by AnonTheAnonymousin japan

[–]benjp2k1 4 points5 points ago

For best results: Have, developed/documented/provable, skills above and beyond English + Japanese language.

Without this, there's pretty much no reason for a Japanese company to hire you unless you plan to teach or translate.

With a major in Japanese, and no other real work experience, you're pretty much limited to teaching English in Japan. Not to say that it's impossible to find something else entry-level, but the odds are stacked very much against you. Your only marketable skill, above and beyond what native Japanese have, is your ability to speak English fluently.

If you're fluent (read: JLPT N1) you might find something in translation...

Generally the skills get developed in your home country before coming over. If you're lucky you might find something here. What was your major?

Basically if you don't speak fluent Japanese or have any special skills beyond speaking English - you're pretty much SOL for a job. Most companies will hire a native level Japanese speaker of a foreigner with the same skill set. So, you need something to set you apart from the rest.

Playing from Japan, I can tell you that StrongVPN works. I know someone else deployed in Japan that's also playing without issue.

Also works great with other services, such as Hulu :D

Weird. We're both connecting in the same manner, just through different VPN providers (by the way, VPNAccounts is crazy expensive - I paid like $60 for a year through StrongVPN and get amazing connection and speeds [About 2mb/s down]). And, by definition a VPN doesn't only forward some of the ports. To do that, you would have to use SSH etc. So, port 1001 should be routed through the VPN along with everything else. Sorry that my answer wasn't able to help you. Hopefully Tera support staff will have a solution available.

What sort of VPN are you using? I use StrongVPN configured through L2TP in Windows 7 Network Connections (no 3rd party software)

I had the same problem connecting from Japan. I was able to do the same trick as you by disconnecting the VPN before hitting play. But, now what you can try - and works for me - is to hit play, then disconnect before Tera launches. Or, if you're not fast enough (I've missed it more than once) if you minimize the game while the first opening cut scene is still playing and disconnect it should work as well. Hope this helps.

I actually get that a lot...

I thought that was just because a lot of Japanese people find foreigners look the same (as do a lot of foreigners find Asian people look the same)

Yeah. But, with it all in Japanese, it would be helpful to have some sort of guide. At least, until you're used to the book.

Congrats on the launch.

I don't know if it's because I'm viewing the site from Japan, or not, but the site seems to be loading quite slowly.
