Amazon's black magic frugal action at work by davidknowsbestin Frugal

[–]avengingnarwhal 2 points3 points ago

We got to keep a book that cost us $16, it was one that we wanted anyway. We had found in the university library and couldn't justify spending 16 bucks. Amazon must have sensed our dilemma!

First shots of my improved 2012 garden. Comments/suggestions? by Tofinochrisin gardening

Just fyi- my zucchini last year ended up being approximately 3'-4' across. Just something to keep in mind, it might crowd out your other plants in your raised bed.

Have you checked Dollar Tree? Or a similar dollar store? Our local DT always has composition pads, I have seen regular paper size and smaller ones available. And they are $1 as opposed to 4

I heard this today while driving and nearly swerved off the road! I'm surprised it made it to the podcast. I thought for sure they would have edited it out.

What questions do you ask yourself before buying something? by budgetchickin Frugal

Will this item save me money? (For example- a coffee maker instead of buying the daily coffee) Does this purchase help me get to any of my life-goals? Like being 100% debt-free and self sufficient. Will I keep this item for the foreseeable future?

Absolutely, I used to be able to go there whenever I wanted and get a good deal. I hate the crowd that a 50% off sale brings but can't bring myself to pay full price, even at GW.

Pros and Cons of living in South Bend. by cojack22in Indiana

If you end up taking the job, there is a state park, Potato Creek, located close to Walkerton. It has some nice hiking and biking trails and a lake. I live in South Bend and the roughest part for me is the permacloud that we all endure from late November until March. The lack of sun is difficult to deal with; but if you love snow you are definitely in luck! As far as night life, I would have to agree with most everyone else that have commented. There is the Southshore line that is a train that leaves from the South Bend airport and will take you to Chicago for around $10; the bonus is that when you come back, we are the last stop. If you happen to pass out or 'fall asleep' you don't miss your stop! ;) Best of luck in your decision.

I don't know if all Goodwill stores offer this but my local ones (Northern Indiana) offer 50% off sales once a month. Everything except new items are included in the sale!

With the spring and summer seasons upon us, what do you do to keep the mosquitos and other bugs at bay. by Geminizein Frugal

We spend a lot of time camping, last summer we used a garlic spray. While it might not be the most frugal it was very effective and all natural. Another bonus shortly after spraying the smell is so strong that you can almost taste it. So be sure to eat some foods that will be complimented by the garlic taste. :) The smell does dissapate within 30 minutes.

I was able to score some at Dollar Tree! A 24 pack for $1, needless to say I bought every box in the store. I have been out of them for the past two months. We need someone to develop something similar that is not disposable. I'm going to try some of these suggestions though, this might give me a reason to buy Pringles ;)

What's the worst mistake your parents made that you have vowed not to repeat? by thesarcasmicin reddit.com

[–]avengingnarwhal 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My parents always "played tricks" on us, for example they would tell us that we had a brother that lived in Kokomo. His name was Joe Blow...you would think that would have tipped us off! But they were always consistent in their tricks even pointing out the same house he lived in as we drove through. As a child I was surprised to find that parents lie about stuff. I then found out many years later that my mother had thought she was a descendant of an Indian Princess for the majority of her life, needless to say it was one of her parents' tricks. It's a legacy that I try not to continue...that's why I feel such guilt in playing into the Santa trick.

In looking through their website, it seems that you would be able to get the food offered at a lower cost if you simply watched for sales or shopped at an Aldi type store. However, I don't know meat prices so I was only able to guess at those.

You can also use wood ash to make lye to then make soaps. It's a pretty laborious process but in the goal of self sufficiency, well worth it.
