If i take a baseball bat to the loudspeaker of the ice cream truck that sits on my block every evening... by schlitz100in baltimore

[–]artie_effim 1 point2 points ago

if you're serious about it ask your city Councilman(person) (I think yours is Jim Kraft) to legislate the shit out of that with a no-ice-cream-truck-noise-after-9 or something, or call the city health dept and lodge a cleanliness complaint (wink).

Grab as much pizza and bagels as you can on your way down - I've been here 20 years and still haven't had a good slice. Other than that, WELCOME - enjoy your cheap ass rent and $3 beers!!

Comcast triple play -do you have it? Recommend it? by artie_effimin baltimore

no FIOS in the City - it is what I would prefer, but no dice - I'm currently stuck with 1.5 mbps DSL - that's all the local loop will support.

+1 Treuth - old school butcher shop - they also process there. With a few days notice they can hook you up with specialty cuts.

Yet another "Moving to Baltimore" post, hailing from the deep South. Advice? by umbraphilesin baltimore

+1 Hampden - it fits almost 100% with your needs. I live in Hampden, and always park within a few houses of my house. Never mind the naysayers about the hipsters and heroin, yes we have both, but we're a nice place to live, a strong community and low crime.

hmm .. do you find service slower 5-8pm or anything like that. They wire a neighborhood/black in serial from the greenbox and I thought service got slower primetime.

Howdy from the SW. I'm headed your way Baltimore-- by ZiggyZuin baltimore

[–]artie_effim 6 points7 points ago

I tell a lot of people this and it often works out. First - you're young, hip and moving to a new city where the only people you know are some swinging dicks on an anonymous message board. Find a restaurant/cafe where you would repeatedly go to and apply for job there. In Baltimore, new friends are hard to come by, BUT - when working as a server, you make 25+ new friends instantly and get to meet a bunch of new people all the time (esp at a cafe)...

Sure the money ain't great, and the work sucks, but you'll be out for after work beers in a few days, networking with folks who know the city and getting a feel for Baltimore life.

That's kinda what I did, 20 years ago and I'm still here and I know tons of people, hell it is how I met my wife.

Ahhh Baltimore, you'll soon know it as Smalltimore.

Nursing is going fine~! by artie_effimin breastfeeding

[–]artie_effim[S] 0 points1 point ago

thanks everyone - here is a bit more detail, both were induced early (preeclampsia), #1 at 38 and #2 at 37.

1 went on CPAPS for 12 hours and observation for another 12, so we couldn't nurse for 24 hours and it was rough going for the first 3 months. #2 had no problems and we nursed right away and we've been going strong ever since, she is gaining 1.5 - 2 oz a day!!

Long story short - keep it up if you can, get help (we went to the hospital nursing clinic, at home lactation consultant and outside office visits) but we were finally able to get #1 on the program. It is a 24 hour a day job, but worth it - knowing full well that most people are not as fortunate as we were to be able to have the time to do it - if you are able to - do it.

We strongly feel that the NICU visit for number 1 put us at a disadvantage - getting things started and all that. it worked out, but we were lucky,

good luck to the rest of you.
