So many people are reposting this financial report with zero background on what Invisible Children is actually about. From day one they have been dedicated to spreading awareness through their documentaries. So YES much of their finances go into making these but they also wouldn't earn a cent more without them. As for travel expenses, not only do they travel back and forth between America and Africa, they also send teams of roadies across the country to show the documentaries to schools and group. As we all know gas is not cheap. Lastly, 2.8 million isn't chump change... that money goes into their programs and does what it is suppose to do.

They never claim that every cent you donate will be sent straight to Africa, at no point are supporters mislead. Invisible Children is as much about awareness as it is action so yes most of the funds stay in the US but that is part of what they're about.

The KONY 2012 Campaign is a Fraud. by entconomicsin WTF

[–]areyouhigh 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure if this has been said yet, but I've been involved with Invisible Children for a few years now and their whole campaign revolves around their documentaries. So as far a financials goes I'm not surprised a good chunk of money is taken out for that. Since day ONE their main purpose to spread awareness has been their videos. They began with "The Rough Cut", a documentary of their original trip to Africa, and then proceeded to make their bracelet videos, which document the lives of different children affected by this war. Without these videos and the tours done to show them (which the majority of travel expenses probably come from) they wouldn't be bringing money in PERIOD.

I don't disagree that people should know both sides of the story, but that does include Invisible Children's past efforts and past campaigns beyond just Kony 2012.

I can't stand the combination of mint and chocolate. What commonly beloved food do you get harassed for not liking? by elosorussoin AskReddit

I feel the exact same way. Last summer at my job we were talking about things we hated and I said "hot cinnamon" then was harassed by a co-worker because I had eaten cinnamon buns a few days earlier....

What exactly goes into the process of creating a language?

Where do you start? How does it develop? Things like that.

I don't know if I will be able to :(. The apartment that I live in now doesn't allow dogs and I won't be out of the lease for a year and a half, but my dad is coming to see him tomorrow and possibly adopt/take care of him until I can! Fingers crossed

How do I bring up get my parents okay with my age-gap relationship? 17 F with a 26 M. by piechiliin relationship_advice

Yeah, I can totally understand. You can't really help who you fall for. Best of luck to you!

How do I bring up get my parents okay with my age-gap relationship? 17 F with a 26 M. by piechiliin relationship_advice

[–]areyouhigh 11 points12 points ago

I hate to post another comment telling you not to date this guy because I do understand liking someone who you probably shouldn't. That being said, I'm 20 now and I am a COMPLETELY different person from when I was 17. Seeing how much I've grown and matured in such a short time (and trust me I was also "mature for my age") makes me wonder what a 26 year old even would see in a 17 year old. You're still a kid and I think that's where a lot of the creep factor comes from.

You're 17 though so you will do what you want. I would say just be open with your parents and completely explain the relationship- what you guys do (recreationally NOT romantically, stay away from sex stuff obviously), what you talk about, etc. Just try to make them understand the relationship the best that you can. I think the more they understand the less their minds will wonder to all the bad "what ifs" that could happen. I doubt they will ever be supportive or in favor of it but maybe they can be tolerant.

People are actually afraid of these things? by jacqueoncein aww

[–]areyouhigh 1 point2 points ago

It makes me really sad that this misconception exists. I work at a shelter and there are currently three pit bull mixes who are having some trouble getting adopted even though they are all majorly sweet. I spend a lot of time with one and he is absolutely the most wonderful thing. Not only has he never been agressive towards me what so ever, he is completely calm and just loves sitting by my side.

No story this time; just an announcement. by 1000Vulturesin nosleep

[–]areyouhigh 1 point2 points ago

Oh man I'm so excited for this! I found your stories through the "What's your favorite thread" as well (some people have already mentioned that's where they found you) and I immediately read them all and then made my best friend and my roommate read them all! Woke up from a nightmare that night- haven't been genuinely that scared in a while. Bravo, sir.
