TROPHY CASE

  • Three-Year Club

I am a 19 year old suffering from a debilitating sense of political inefficacy that has me seriously considering sitting out this next presidental election. I hear low voter turnout among the youth is frowned upon here. Convince me why voting is worth it. by ankh7309in politics

Based on your post, I'd say you are a thoughtful and conscientious individual, and that's why - as a fellow citizen - I want you to vote. Voting is an act of trust that people reasoning together can come to optimum decisions. But don't stop there - be informed and involved and willing to organize and protest when you feel leadership has become unresponsive to the people.

When I see 1000 pissed off replies on Reddit, it makes me wonder... by Jackz0rin politics

Organize with others of like minds. In this humble old guy's opinion, the most important political task of your generation is to break with the Democrats and form something new. They have proven to be unable (or unwilling) to effectively defend your interests and those of the working and middle class against our 30-year slide towards corporatocracy.

Why doesn't the Obama Campaign start calling Romney's/GOP's policies what they are: Austerity Measures. by masstermindin politics

[–]antmenattack 2 points3 points ago

Well, seeing as how Obama is willing to make big cuts in Medicare, Social Security, and other social spending, and since he has offered no new stimulus package in the past 3 yrs and no major job or wage protection measures - I think you can draw the conclusion that he doesn't call it "austerity" because he is pursuing similar policies.

Progressives of reddit: there's more at stake here than drone strikes and legalized pot by Alyeska2112in politics

[–]antmenattack 2 points3 points ago

It's not just drones and pot. It's civil liberties, continuation and expansion of wars, and way too much legislation that was purposefully defanged to appease the wealthy and influential (Dodd-Frank, HAMP, Obamacare, Jobs Act, etc.). I don't want a messiah or someone who never compromises his ideals - I'm too old for shit like that - but I do expect a little more from my candidate than, "Hey, he's slightly left of Romney and Bush."

83% of repubilcans voted for cispa while only 23% of democracts voted for cispa. So to the redditors who keep saying the parties are the same are you not going to vote this year? by redditgolemin politics

Amen, bobsomeguy. To say there is a money and power elite in this country, and that politicians are beholden to those elites or drawn from their ranks, is not a conspiratorial view - it's the way government works. To quote Ralph Nader: "The only difference between the Republican and Democratic parties is the velocities with which their knees hit the floor when corporations knock on their door." And we are expected to get excited because only a quarter of the democrats voted for blatantly anti-democratic legislation? How many of the others didn't vote for it because they preferred slightly less blatantly anti-democratic versions of the same legislation?

Why I Should Pay Higher Taxes | It doesn't do me any good to be personally wealthier if my country or the world as a whole is becoming more unequal, more unstable, more gripped by poverty, more resentful, more insecure. by dave723in politics

[–]antmenattack 3 points4 points ago

Exactly. If the higher taxes are actually going towards programs that benefit the middle class - infrastructure, education, health and retirement etc. - that's one thing. But in a time when all of these things are being cut to prop up military and financial sector, then higher taxes becomes just another austerity measure for the middle and lower classes.

So somehow, out of 315 million Americans, the Republican Party managed to find the one guy who couldn’t run on Obamacare. by wang-bangerin politics

[–]antmenattack 1 point2 points ago

Just playing devil's advocate here- but why couldn't Romneycare be an advantage in the general election? Those who think Obamacare is evil socialism are a minority in the country. Most people want something done about the trainwreck that is our health care system. Romney may sound credible in saying "well, I did something that actually works, and is limited government, states' choice, blah, blah." To be clear, I'm not buying that crap, but a lot of people will.

Brecht is also the wag who wryly suggested that maybe the East German government should "dissolve the people and elect another." Great quote.

Time for Democratic donors to wake up by IsleCookin politics

[–]antmenattack 0 points1 point ago

Could another reason for the lack of donations have to do with the number of disaffected Democrats? Just sayin'.

"The essence of any utopianism is: Conjure an ideal that makes an impossible demand on reality, then announce that, until the demand is met in full, your ideal can't be fairly evaluated."
