Milgram showed that a susceptibility to authority was all that was necessary to turn average people into Nazi prison guards. Humans are tribal in nature, and I think obedience to authority is both innate and necessary for human civilization to exist and advance. But that trait can be exploited for good or ill via any accepted authoritarian structure, of which organized religion is but one.
