Out of the approx. 750,000 soldiers that fought for the South, these were the last three surviving Confederate Civil War veterans. Photo taken in 1951 [566x698]. by crashinin HistoryPorn

[–]acegibson 5 points6 points ago

from crashin's research:

William Townsend (105), John Salling (104), and William J. Boush (105)attend the 61st and final reunion of the United Confederate Veterans, held in Norfolk, 30 May - 2 June 1951.

from Wikipedia's Last Surviving United States War Veterans page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_surviving_United_States_war_veterans

John B. Salling was shown by census data to have been born in 1856, and his status as a bona fide veteran is listed as "debunked".

The other two are listed as possible and probable.

You know, you get up there on stage and you blather on for 2 or 3 hours and it's all just damned interesting. Have you given any thought as to why that is? I can't think of anybody else who could do what you do so consistently and so well.

If microwaves are lower in energy (longer wavelength) than the visible spectrum why are they so useful for heating up food? by radeyrooin askscience

[–]acegibson 0 points1 point ago

Is it correct to say that the heating is caused by friction at the molecular level, which itself is caused by molecules acting like tiny magnets and constantly aligning themselves to a rapidly shifting electromagnetic field?

To make a good person do evil it takes religion

Milgram showed that a susceptibility to authority was all that was necessary to turn average people into Nazi prison guards. Humans are tribal in nature, and I think obedience to authority is both innate and necessary for human civilization to exist and advance. But that trait can be exploited for good or ill via any accepted authoritarian structure, of which organized religion is but one.
