d2 - wondering what to socket in my merc's gear (H) by twigboyin Diablo

[–]Zeuter 2 points3 points ago

With knockback on your bow, you probably won't need Holy Freeze, so offense would indeed be best. That might aura is nice.

I tend to go for an insight polearm first, simply because I dislike chugging mana potions and it's a cheap option before better stuff like reaper's toll or pride. Then, the next thing your merc needs is lifesteal, go for a Vampire Gaze or Andariel's Visage. If you don't have crushing blow, then you'll want to put it on your merc. If you do enough damage, then it's wiser to invest in more defensive items.

Why D2's and by extension D3's control scheme is flawed for ranged classes by Zeuterin Diablo

[–]Zeuter[S] 3 points4 points ago

Good arguments! Though, this means melee characters inherently have a lower mechanical skill ceiling than ranged characters, purely because they cannot benefit from that mechanic. That doesn't make for very compelling design to me. In D3, there is no more dodging melee attacks by outrunning enemies' attack animation, which makes the gap even wider.

I really like the shift+click mechanic, but saying that it would be "like cheating" is silly. When a group of players has mastered a technical skill that gives them an advantage, of course they're going to complain that their advantage and invested time is being taken away (such as DotA denying). That should never stop bad game mechanics from being taken out though.

Evidently, mastering shift+click will make you a better player, since you shouldn't always target where your opponent is at that moment. What the real problem is, is that playing "as if you have WASD" by rapidly moving your mouse is still possible (which makes aiming/prediction trivial), but it's simply very exhausting and not very fun.

If you had bothered to check the rest of the comments and the original post in that thread, you would have noticed that it's not a thread that encouraged long essays. Instead, to just post what you are not content about. You are taking my comment completely out of context. The only reason I'm getting downvoted there is because people disagree with me, and that's bullshit. None of the posts there are constructive.

Since I wanted to seriously discuss this issue because I honestly wondered why people are so averse to WASD movement, I created this thread, adding the reasoning I have for the opinion I stated in that other thread. This is not "creating arguments out of thin air", it's simply constructing an argument for a more serious topic. I've yet to see you refute a single point.

The only reasonable counterargument I've seen in this thread so far is this, regarding splitting movement and action. I'd like to see more of that, and less "boo hoo I don't agree with you", without any elaboration whatsoever.

I don't think I'd be too fond of auto-targeting. Besides, with most aoe skills (Arcane Orb, for one), you'll want to target the middle of a pack, not a stray monster in front of it.

What's to keep them from implementing it though? I imagine it takes a trivial amount of resources, and anyone who doesn't like it can simply choose not to use it.

To the view of course, where one has 8 possible directions of movement. Since the view is locked, I don't see how this is so different from old top-down RPG's where you'd move with the arrow keys.

Of course, the arrow keys are out of the question here because there are no other keys surrounding them, which makes hotkeys a nightmare. This is why I suggested WASD.

I'm not suggesting they're handicapped at all. For your average player, it's not hard to play a ranged class using the stutter step at maximum efficiency. The problem is that doing so is very, very tiring, and impossible for physically impaired players.

The skill selection interface is very, very bad, and there is no WASD movement.

Both of them very dumb mistakes.

Tumblr, of course.

The source is this, but I don't think that's the person who made it.

If you invert it, you get stuff like this. I think we can all agree that it looks rather absurd.

Beating inferno will be a fun challenge, but nowhere near anything like Spelunky or Super Meat Boy.

Also, Wizard will still be my favourite class.

There's no pattern recognition on the clothes: if you search for this, then you don't get any clothes with a diamond pattern.

Might be hard to implement (depending on what you currently have), but I'd say it's worth the effort.

If it hasn't been filtered yet there might be bits of dead bees and wax in it. This, however, is still safe to eat.

Your attacks per second go up. Note how it doesn't say time between attacks, but instead attacks per second.

The order of the remaining classes is:

  • Barbarian
  • Monk
  • Witch Doctor
  • Wizard

I found this by looking at the source.

Additionally, the ten unlocks are as follows, in the order they will appear:

  • Game Director Jay Wilson, Art Director Christian Lichtner, and Lead Software Engineer Jason Regier sat down last spring to discuss the state of Diablo III development in this exclusive first video installment of Developer Diaries.
  • The following comes from the bloodstained pages of Deckard Cain's own illustrated journal, Book of Cain. Brimming with forgotten knowledge, this tome puts forth the histories of Sanctuary and realms beyond in an attempt to forestall the End of Days.
  • Developer Diary II
  • On May 3, 2011, Jay Wilson, Christian Lichtner, and Jason Regier reconvened to discuss some of their biggest challenges going into the Diablo III testing and localization phases in this third video installment of Developer Diaries.
  • Our own Rob Simpson talks Diablo III item, quest, and sound design with Senior Designer Jason Bender, Senior Sound Designer Kris Giampa, and Lead Content Designer Kevin Martens. What are the best ways to capture the sound of bones breaking? Find out in this BlizzCast 17 video exclusive.
  • Explore this chilling excerpt from The Order, an upcoming novel recounting Deckard Cain's struggles against the forces of evil alongside his mysterious young charge, Leah. This story takes place years before the events of Diablo III.
  • With internal testing complete and the game launch rapidly approaching, Jay Wilson, Christian Lichtner, and Jason Regier share what they’ve learned over the course of Diablo III’s development, how they’ll spend their time after the game releases, and final thoughts they’d like to leave you with in this fourth video installment of Developer Diaries.
