Apollo 16 astronaut Charles M. Duke standing on the Moon, April 1972 by BornOnAugust31stin pics

[–]Zerv14 0 points1 point ago

I'd love to see your data that backs that up, because it's complete horseshit.

The moon is in synchronous rotation with the Earth and there are no "permanent" light/dark sides of the moon. The far side of the moon which is never visible from earth receives on average the same amount of light as the near side of the moon that is visible from earth.

That's not true. Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming also have unrestricted concealed carry without the need for a permit.

Can you cite the source where you learned that Breivik used an AK pattern rifle chambered in 7.62x39?

The stuff I've read indicates that he used a Ruger Mini 14 (.223).

TIL the way the UK Submarine Command Course handles an unsuccessful officer is to not make him aware of his failure until a small boat comes to remove him from the sub, gear packed by crew and brought up for the transfer with a bottle of whisky, as he will never again return to submarine service. by dorianecruin todayilearned

Unlike today's aerial drones, ICBM-equipped submarines have the capacity to end human civilization. If an ICBM was accidentally launched, it could easily spark a nuclear retaliation.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with letting unmanned nuclear weapons platforms swim around in the ocean without any direct human contact. For these weapons platforms to be effective deterrents, they must be undetectable which means hiding deep underwater for long periods of time. This eliminates the ability for a human to remotely control them or even monitor them when they dive deep. So we'd have to trust their AI and hope that a bug doesn't launch a Trident ballistic missile at Russia and start World War 3.

True, but the downside is trying to reload a revolver one-handed.

Also, there are ways to rack the slide of a semi-auto on your clothing with the proper sights. I've also seen people rack glocks simply by thrusting them forward or backward quickly.

From earth to the biggest stars in the universe. by b0redin gifs

[–]Zerv14 16 points17 points ago

All those large stars, including VY Canis Majoris, are located in the Milky Way galaxy.

Therefore, it is almost certainly not the biggest star in the universe. It's probably not even in the top 100 or even top 1000 largest stars when you consider the hundreds of billions of galaxies in the observable universe.

TIL 95% of people in the UK who buy organic said their main reason was to avoid pesticides and had no idea organic farming can and does use pesticides. by opaque22in todayilearned

[–]Zerv14 1 point2 points ago*

I won't argue with you about organic farming. Although the yields are less than traditional methods, it is still much better for the environment and the evidence bears this out. However, again I fail to see any scientific evidence which supports the claim that organic foods have health benefits because of reduced/no ingestion of substances utilized in traditional farming. The data from multiple studies shows that levels of chemical residues from traditional methods are already below acceptable limits, so any reduced levels due to organic farming will not have any impact on human health.

"Organic fruits and vegetables can be expected to contain fewer agrochemical residues than conventionally grown alternatives; yet, the significance of this difference is questionable, inasmuch as actual levels of contamination in both types of food are generally well below acceptable limits."

If you thought that I was saying that anthrax is utilized in organic farming, then I'm afraid it is you who needs logical training. My example merely illustrated the naturalistic fallacy of assuming that natural products are inherently safer because they are natural. It had nothing to do specifically with this organic food debate. I assumed this would be obvious, but I guess I underestimated your stupidity.

Thanks for playing and better luck next time.

What evidence can you provide to show that "actual" organic food has some beneficial qualities over non-organic food? From a nutrition standpoint, the scientific literature shows no nutritional benefits. This position is supported by, among others, the UK Food Standards Agency. I have also linked to some research papers.

"On the basis of a systematic review of studies of satisfactory quality, there is no evidence of a difference in nutrient quality between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs."

If your standard for food quality is not based on nutritional quality, what is it based on and what empirical evidence can you provide to support your claims?

Naturalistic fallacy.

Natural does not mean safe. Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) is naturally found in soil. I don't think you want anthrax in your food.

Chest compression-only CPR is for lay responders without proper CPR training only.

Current guidelines for trained CPR responders still has compressions integrated with breathing at a ratio of 30:2, with the old A-B-C replaced with C-A-B. Compressions are now the first thing you do once you start CPR.
