The counter-weight of the boat acts as a sort of lever. Since the catamaran is so wide, this leverage is very high. This allows more of the energy from the wind to be transferred to the forward motion of the boat when moving perpendicular to the wind, and thus the boat moves faster.

Without the leverage, the boat would tip over very far (to the left) and reduce the cross-section with the wind, and would not gain as much energy, and not move forward as fast.

It's a game of maintaining a semi-stable equilibrium in which you want to maximize the force pushing the boat forward.

In Italy, tip is automatically included in the price. This takes the form of a "cover charge". So no, you don't tip on the bill, because you already have.

Would this work? Subsidizing Jobs to create more Jobs? by SnowFrogin Economics

[–]Zelgada 0 points1 point ago

you are being short sighted. What about the three other points?

a reduction in the multiplier effect created by the circulation of money from employees

So the "spending power" of money decreases, and the expected economic stimulus never happens...

employed workers may work shorter hours

So, productivity doesn't actually increase and hence, no economic growth...

labor productivity may decrease, perhaps because employers retain more workers than they need

Again, no realized economic growth...

If you use terms like "bogus government statistics", you are showing your ignorance in the issue quite clearly.

The fact is:

EVIDENCE shows that this kind of subsidy does not work. This is a Law of economics.

wow. you really are missing the mark. How about you study some more economics before trying to argue. Here is a short study list for you:

TIL 50 to 90 Percent of the World's Languages are Expected to Disappear in the next Century by DocUnissisin todayilearned

[–]Zelgada 0 points1 point ago

That's not how it works.

How's this for an example suitable for reddit: loss of culture is a loss of meme's. Just as genetic variation helps species survive, cultural variation helps species survive.

Eliminating cultures would be akin to massive inbreeding so that we are all related. This increases our susceptibility to new diseases. Think of a cultural "disease" (a cult perhaps ??) that would quickly sweep through all of society. It is better to have variety of cultures to keep a healthy society, as it is to have genetic variety to keep a healthy species.

except that language and culture are related. loss of language is also a loss of culture.

Would this work? Subsidizing Jobs to create more Jobs? by SnowFrogin Economics

[–]Zelgada 2 points3 points ago

The major flaw with this approach is that creating jobs is not the same as creating work! To really solve the unemployment problem, it is not enough to have more people working. What is required is to grow the demand for work. Yes, this is a chicken and egg problem, but this program is in no way guaranteed to increase the demand for employees.

You are looking at this from the employee point of view. Think for a minute from a higher vantage point (an employer). You want to sell your products. The economy is poor, and the demand is low, therefore, you produce less of your product than you normally would. You can't support as large a staff, and therefore you must reduce your staff. Now, a subsidy program to keep staff on hand will result not in economic growth, but instead with having extra staff sitting around twiddling their thumbs, or even worse, your business choking on inventory.

The only way to solve this problem is to sell more product, make more profit, and grow your business.

For anyone interested... this uses Microsoft Seadragon to make the zooming and scrolling smooth. I've been playing around with it and find it really interesting. However, it doesn't seem to be used very much in practical applications. That is, except for a few cases like these images (is this a practical application?).
