Strumming styles... by thatfoodin Guitar

Yeah, I've gotten tired of guitarists who use the same rhythm over and over again, but I've also fallen in love with guitarists because they use the same essential rhythm and make songs sound different.

Look at Keith Richards or John Lennon or Jimi Hendrix. When you study the basic rhythms of a given guitarist, they all have obvious motifs and ideas running through each song, yet the songs still sound different from each other.

Put different emotions behind you songs; they'll start to sound different.

When it's your chance to shine, shine like the brightest star in the universe. The other 99% of the time, though, the rest of your band would appreciate it if you'd be a team player and stop showing off.

Make the song work, even if that means someone gets to be louder than you.

You don't have to be Jimi to get your music through; you can find your own way to do it.

After a while, "jamming" gets boring. I want to work to create something more lasting.

What was the best advice you've ever gotten to become a better guitarist? by TheMatheMusicianin Guitar

[–]YouFuckingRetard 2 points3 points ago

The guitar is just an instrument to bring forth music. Stop thinking of yourself as a guitarist, start thinking of yourself as a musician.

Getting started playing with a group? How? by mversteeg3in Guitar

[–]YouFuckingRetard 2 points3 points ago

The more you jam, the better you get at jamming.

The whole point of jamming is that everyone just brings what they have to the table, and you make stuff up on the spot based on the talents of everyone in the group. So what do we learn from this?

  • Listen to a bigger variety of music. The more you listen to, the more ideas you have. Jazz is especially good for jamming.

  • It's not a problem to play random notes, unless they sound like random notes. Study phrasing. With phrasing, you need to get the rhythmic part right, not necessarily the notes.

  • Don't be afraid to hit wrong notes. That's why it's a jam and not a show.

SPIN Magazine's top 100 guitarists of all time...ಠ_ಠ by acidroachin Guitar

[–]YouFuckingRetard 4 points5 points ago

These lists always piss people off. Why does anybody even waste time fucking reading them? It's either "Jimi's not #1, I'm so pissed!" or it's "Jimi's #1 again? I'm so pissed!"

Stop reading fucking lists; get out there and find out what you like for yourself.
