One thing I've learnt working with Genetic algorithms recently is that sometimes siblings that are initially bad end up being the better solution (final child). Also keeping slightly worse candidates and mating these with better ones sometimes produces better, unexpectedly good results. I'd wager that keeping the gene pool more varied is better in the long run. Just my two cents :)
