U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, in a letter to a friend, had this to say about evolution way back in 1922. by VibikXin atheism

[–]Wyrds 0 points1 point ago

Wilson is the only U.S. president to attain a doctoral degree (History and Political Science, if I'm not mistaken). Not that a graduate degree says anything about any one president's quality (he had some racist stances, by modern standards), but it's just an interesting fact, nonetheless.

We evolved from another species of primate that bore resemblances to the apes we are familiar with. But "Ape" is such an ill-defined term, with too many pejorative connotations... I don't like to use it. Most uninformed people take it to mean "gorilla," which we certainly did not evolve from.

But this is antithetical to what catholicism proclaims, historicaly.. That unfettered access to God isn't possible. You need the intervention of a priest for absolution, for example. This 'personal relationship' stuff is relatively recent, not something that's been around from the beginning of christianity. My question is: when did it start?

Arrogant atheists by bubbadumptruckin atheism

[–]Wyrds 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or is the whole "personal relationship with God" thing a huge misinterpretation of the expression "personal God," which really means that one believe god is anthropomorphic, and has a personality... essentially that he is a "person" in that way.

When I was little and still religious, I always took "personal God" to mean the former (that my relationship with him was an intimate one in that way). I wonder how many people make the same mistake and it goes uncorrected... I think that's where this "personal relationship" bullshit emerged. Can someone please correct me?

What? I'd say that lower-denomination bills are far more common than higher ones. George Washington almost certainly makes more appearances in people's wallets than any of the other figures on US currency. I would guess Lincoln is probably second, but I don't know if the number of bills out there can be accurately measured. (I'm just speaking from my experience as someone with a lower-middle-class financial situation.)

So tell me again how unimportant the Treasury thinks Washington is...

I've recently put it together that the correspondents are the show's writers. They don't have them on for sometimes several episodes at a stretch, and I always wondered... does Wyatt have another job or something? Then I realized that he's funny enough to probably be writing for the show. As are Samantha Bee, Jason Jones, et al. This also means they don't have to pay correspondents any more than writers, if they're one-in-the-same.

I'm a medievalist currently in the midst of a PhD in English literature at a large private research university in NYC. I hold an MA in Medieval English Literatures from the University of York (UK), and I specialize in the French of England -- the body of literature writtin in Anglo-Norman in the period that emerges after the Conquest in 1066 through the fifteenth century -- but the High/Late Middle Ages, generally. My current interests include orality/literacy, triglossia (coexistence of Middle English, Anglo-Norman, and Latin), pastoralia and homiletic/devotional literature, and manuscript studies, as well as critical theory. Woohoo!

What? I haven't heard about anyone trying to fuck with the Declaration of Independence as it reads today. The Constitution is malleable, however, and it's widely regarded that James Madison had the largest role in the composition of that document.

Definitions of "alliteration" lifted from the OED:

  1. gen. The commencing of two or more words in close connexion, with the same letter, or rather the same sound.

  2. The commencement of certain accented syllables in a verse with the same consonant or consonantal group, or with different vowel sounds, which constituted the structure of versification in O[ld] E[nglish]. and the Teutonic languages generally. Thus from the beginning of Langland's Piers Ploughman, text C:

In a somere seyson whan softe was þe sonne,
Y shop me into shrobbis as y a shepherde were;
In abit as an ermite vnholy of werkes,
Ich wente forth in þe worlde wonders to hure,
And sawe meny cellis and selcouthe þynges.

NB "shrobbis" is also found as "shroudes" (i.e. clothes), and "shepherde" is also found as "shepe." You get a lot of variations due to mouvance.

A quick literal translation:

In a summer season, when soft was the sun,
I made myself [up] in shrubs ("clothes," alt.) as [if] I a shepherd were,
In the habit [i.e. clothes] of a hermit, unholy of works,
I went forth in the world, wonders to hear,
And saw many wonders and marvelous things.

Don't mind all the naysayers! Yes it was somewhat of a milestone on the way to a balance of governing powers. But everything you've said is absolutely right. It was something like congress basically limiting the powers of the president, except that the congress in question didn't really have the interests of their constituency (the smallfolk) in mind.. so basically like congress today. This was an effort on the part of the wealthy and powerful to retain more wealth and power. The meaning people (particularly Americans) have derived from it has of course come centuries after the fact, and was very unlike how it was originally viewed.
