Looking for a favorite dessert recipe. Can anyone help me? by 1sandy1claws13in asianeats

[–]Wolke 0 points1 point ago

I can't figure out what the outside could be, so I'm out of ideas on an official name. :( The traditional "bao"/bun comes in red bean as well.

Yeah, these are very soft bread, think softer than the softest regular white you can get. I'd still call then fluffy rather than gooey, and they're definitely not sticky. On the other hand, they shouldn't be visibly browned. I'm pretty puzzled about the outside for your buns, TBH. Do you know what kind of Chinese bakery? Northern Chinese, Southern/Cantonese? That might help narrow it down.

Sounds like custard bao to me. It's a traditional Chinese dim sum offering. The custard inside should be correct, at least, but I'm not sure about the outer layer. Fish around for recipes! This link is simply the first one I pulled off google.

Gunpowder in fantasy novels? by ImpishGrinin Fantasy

Hm, Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle sort of does it, but it's verging into very early steampunk if I don't have my time periods mixed up.

Questions about from an incoming freshman by SirHerpOfDerpin uchicago

[–]Wolke 1 point2 points ago

Seconded. I stayed at Stony second year, and it's a super quiet place, really not somewhere you want to be as a first-year when you're trying to make friends. Also, a bunch of the rooms are triangle-shaped, making for really strange furniture arrangements.

A small request about the way we have been describing our progress. Possible [rant] by deskrabbitin keto

[–]Wolke 5 points6 points ago

Right on! This was such a comforting post to read. I have a super-cyclical weight loss schedule where I lose 4 lbs right after my period, then no loss for the rest of the month. Ladies, don't get discouraged!

Advice needed on breaking long plateau - IF vs long cheat? by Wolkein keto

Hey, not sure if you're still interested in an update - IF seems to help a tiny, tiny bit. Maybe an extra pound per month?

r/keto, opinion on 4g net carbs pasta sauce? by Leevarin keto

[–]Wolke 0 points1 point ago

No official source, but I've seen a couple of packages where the total carbs is less than the fiber carbs, so presumably they're already netted out. =/ Yeah it bummed me out too.

r/keto, opinion on 4g net carbs pasta sauce? by Leevarin keto

[–]Wolke -1 points0 points ago

Watch out for Trader Joe's - the carb counts are already netted out, so don't minus fiber again. 6g carbs should still be fine though (if the info on the website makes the same mistake).

Fantasy with Romance by ISw3arItWasntM3in Fantasy

Many of Guy Gavriel Kay's stand-alone books have a strong romantic element - Lions of Al-Rashan is a great one.

Reddit, do you have any personal conspiracy theories that you believe in? by catfishangerin AskReddit

[–]Wolke 2 points3 points ago

I've got two out of Singapore:

  1. The government knows exactly where you go. As a student, your student ID also is your transit card. Should be simple enough to hook up your unique ID number to the unique ID number of every train stop and bus stop.
  2. Not mine, but as told by a friend: Back in the days when the train system was first being built, a feng shui master told the then-Prime Minister of Singapore that the train system would seriously interfere with the country's good fortune. To counter it, every one who rode a train had to carry one of those eight-sided taoist (maybe?) symbols. Since it was hard to enforce, the government built the eight-sided motif into the Singapore $1 coin.

Haha welp, shark week is one of many euphemisms for a lady's time of the month. I'll keep you updated! No change so far.

Intermittent fasting. Eat only within a 8 hour window each day (e.g. 12pm to 8pm).

I started IF last Monday (after a cheat weekend) and so far no new weight bottom. But I have some shark week coming up so that might also be hindering it.

Jumping ship from Northwestern? by DescriptiveEthicsin uchicago

[–]Wolke 4 points5 points ago

I transferred out of NYU to UChicago for largely the same reasons you mentioned - I wanted more of a challenge, and to be around people who actually wanted that challenge as well and were willing to work for it. (It should be noted that I was already pretty geeky, so uh, culture fit wasn't a worry for me.) Of course, some majors require less work than others, but by and large UChicago students all feel like they're pulling their weight in terms of studying. You'd be hard pressed to find a more intellectually curious environment.

Hundreds of people on 59th street will be having heart attacks when they see these flyers which look unfortunately similar to parking tickets on their windscreens!! by imahappycamperin chicago

Ugh, these fucks. I had a flyer that left a permanent newsprint mark on my windscreen. Not cool.

... The last ticket I got was stuck smack bang to the middle of my driver's window with their sticky tape.

a month on keto, now allergic to everything? by martinusin keto

[–]Wolke 0 points1 point ago

Go see your doctor, as everyone says. It may be an aggravated allergy - I was only slightly allergic to almonds and avocados before starting keto, but when I started eating more of them after starting keto, my tolerance to them definitely decreased. I'm basically 100% allergic to almonds right now.

Guy Gavriel Kay's The Lions of Al-Rashan is based in a Spanish/Moorish setting too, with strong links to the Middle-East.

Do undergrads ever publish in a major journal? by SantyClausein academiceconomics

[–]Wolke 2 points3 points ago

I don't know about econ specifically, but I've had bio friends in undergrad who were on track to be the last author in papers to be published in major journals. I feel your professor is right to suggest that you try though - the worst that could happen is that they reject you, which doesn't change anything. Going through the publishing process would also be helpful if you intend to stay in research. Let the journal worry about whether or not they want to publish undergrad research - you just go ahead and give it a shot.

Why are city/country names different in different languages? by W_I_L_L_Y_Din AskReddit

[–]Wolke 0 points1 point ago

Totally making stuff up here... But since no one else has given a half-way intelligent or on-topic answer: You're probably looking at two or three different phenomena.

The first: in old times, the people who first encountered a place may not have known what it was called in the local dialect and just picked something to call it, which eventually became the norm, even after they learnt what the place's inhabitants called it. Place names may also have changed over time depending on official whimsy/stubbornness, e.g. Myanmar vs Burma.

Second: the original name needed to be phonetically altered for easier pronunciation, e.g. Koeln (in German) vs Cologne (English).

Third: a variant of the name was deliberately chosen to "fit" better with existing language structure. Mandarin Chinese for example has both pure phonetic names (e.g. Jia Na Da for Canada), but it also has country names that fit the traditional way of naming places. Country names in Mandarin are normally one syllable followed by the word for country (Guo), e.g. Zhong Guo for China. So you see half-phonetic names like Ying Guo (England using the "Ing" sound) and De Guo (Germany using the "Deut/Deustch" sound).

Friend has a creeper semi-stalking her at work. How to handle it? by throwaway2716057in AskReddit

[–]Wolke 2 points3 points ago

I sort of feel like going to the police straight away might be a bit of an overreaction. The guy hasn't shown up anywhere other than her work; the notes, while definitely not smooth, aren't actually crazy (like, I want to bathe in your blood creepy). Has she actually told him no? Has anyone told him that she's not interested? If so, either your friend or her manager should politely tell him to stop. If he continues, it's a clear cut case for the police, but as-is, it's not abnormal.
