TROPHY CASE

  • Two-Year Club

Hundreds of people on 59th street will be having heart attacks when they see these flyers which look unfortunately similar to parking tickets on their windscreens!! by imahappycamperin chicago

[–]Wolke 1 point2 points ago

Ugh, these fucks. I had a flyer that left a permanent newsprint mark on my windscreen. Not cool.

... The last ticket I got was stuck smack bang to the middle of my driver's window with their sticky tape.

a month on keto, now allergic to everything? by martinusin keto

[–]Wolke 0 points1 point ago

Go see your doctor, as everyone says. It may be an aggravated allergy - I was only slightly allergic to almonds and avocados before starting keto, but when I started eating more of them after starting keto, my tolerance to them definitely decreased. I'm basically 100% allergic to almonds right now.

Guy Gavriel Kay's The Lions of Al-Rashan is based in a Spanish/Moorish setting too, with strong links to the Middle-East.

Do undergrads ever publish in a major journal? by SantyClausein academiceconomics

[–]Wolke 2 points3 points ago

I don't know about econ specifically, but I've had bio friends in undergrad who were on track to be the last author in papers to be published in major journals. I feel your professor is right to suggest that you try though - the worst that could happen is that they reject you, which doesn't change anything. Going through the publishing process would also be helpful if you intend to stay in research. Let the journal worry about whether or not they want to publish undergrad research - you just go ahead and give it a shot.

Why are city/country names different in different languages? by W_I_L_L_Y_Din AskReddit

[–]Wolke 0 points1 point ago

Totally making stuff up here... But since no one else has given a half-way intelligent or on-topic answer: You're probably looking at two or three different phenomena.

The first: in old times, the people who first encountered a place may not have known what it was called in the local dialect and just picked something to call it, which eventually became the norm, even after they learnt what the place's inhabitants called it. Place names may also have changed over time depending on official whimsy/stubbornness, e.g. Myanmar vs Burma.

Second: the original name needed to be phonetically altered for easier pronunciation, e.g. Koeln (in German) vs Cologne (English).

Third: a variant of the name was deliberately chosen to "fit" better with existing language structure. Mandarin Chinese for example has both pure phonetic names (e.g. Jia Na Da for Canada), but it also has country names that fit the traditional way of naming places. Country names in Mandarin are normally one syllable followed by the word for country (Guo), e.g. Zhong Guo for China. So you see half-phonetic names like Ying Guo (England using the "Ing" sound) and De Guo (Germany using the "Deut/Deustch" sound).

Friend has a creeper semi-stalking her at work. How to handle it? by throwaway2716057in AskReddit

[–]Wolke 2 points3 points ago

I sort of feel like going to the police straight away might be a bit of an overreaction. The guy hasn't shown up anywhere other than her work; the notes, while definitely not smooth, aren't actually crazy (like, I want to bathe in your blood creepy). Has she actually told him no? Has anyone told him that she's not interested? If so, either your friend or her manager should politely tell him to stop. If he continues, it's a clear cut case for the police, but as-is, it's not abnormal.

Ugh, I hate pigeons. Parts of the loop look like someone is making a remake of The Birds, the way these things swarm.

You have an exact time in the episode? What I'd do is play it on my PC and run it through Soundhound on my Android to see if we can get a match.

Let me be cliche: help me get a job! by raddein consulting

[–]Wolke 4 points5 points ago

Bad news is that official recruiting is pretty much over. At this point, you'd be best off working any connections and ins that you have. It's possible though, like my friend was laid off from his RA job in September but picked up an econ consulting job within three weeks.

What to do with an economics degree? by Bigbrassin academiceconomics

[–]Wolke 1 point2 points ago

The question is, what can't you go for. With your math background especially, you'd probably be a great fit at an economic consulting firm like Cornerstore or Analysis Group. There's also analyst jobs at the various Feds (e.g. St Louis Fed which puts out a bunch of statistics every month or so). If you don't want to do something math-heavy, there are always the softer traditional econ options like management consulting, investment banking, and business (Target and Sears both run business analyst rotation programs; places like Google and Southwest also look for business/marketing analysts). Even if you choose not to do something econ-related, a math-heavy econ degree is probably one of the better signals to broadcast, say, compared to a literature degree.

Grad school is seriously a bad idea if you have no interest in pushing yourself further into the academic side of the field.

[Spoilers] What did everyone think about the reveal at the end? by BLUECLEARin homeland

[–]Wolke 1 point2 points ago

Don't know why so many folks are downvoting you. I too think that it would probably be the lamest deus ex machina written into a TV series in the last couple of years if the writers do actually intend to go forward with "it was Walker all along". The whole POINT of this TV series is that Brody seems like a decent guy but could secretly be a terrorist - that's where all the dramatic tension comes from. Let's not even get started on the having the two leads shack up. (That's been explained reasonably well in ep 7, but when it happened I was so angry).

FWIW, given how the writers seem to like their explanations coming after the event (like Carrie and Brody), I'm guessing that they'll somehow cover their ass on this in the next episode. Also, there's what, five episodes left? So hopefully this is just misdirection.

A Thrones-based social networking game — think FarmVille comes to Westeros — is also in the works.

Everything else was fine. This? Do NOT want.

I hope he knows that the school is really, really nitpicky about our brand...

Reddit, should I pay half of my girlfriend's road tax/insurance? by northofnowherein self

[–]Wolke 9 points10 points ago

I would differentiate petrol from (season) parking, tax and insurance, since petrol is variable (i.e. depends on how much you drive) but the rest are fixed (you're paying no matter how much you drive).

Reddit, should I pay half of my girlfriend's road tax/insurance? by northofnowherein self

[–]Wolke 1 point2 points ago

I think half the road tax is fair, but not half the insurance - she's the only one driving it, after all, unless your name is also put on the papers. It also depends how many times she drives you specifically to stuff; for example, if you hop off somewhere along the way to work or go grocery shopping together, she should still pay for most of the insurance; but if she drives you, say, to a doctor's appointment an hour away every week, then you should chip in more.

It also doesn't have to be a 50-50 split. 25/75? 30/70?

Are you also going to pay for maintenance/repair costs?
