Sometimes timing is everything -- even accidently by RealHTin itookapicture

[–]Winga 1 point2 points ago

I absolutely love the combination of child and beach, light and wave. Even before I first saw this, I trawled repeatedly for art and photos with these elements and didn't find one on-line that I liked better.

It has been a long time since I first saw it here. I wouldn't have bothered mentioning that you'd posted it before, except that I thought it was worth confirming that I knew it was yours. I did check because I liked it so much that I remembered the photo clearly but wasn't so sure about who posted it. :)

Agreed. She has great skills and this was really entertaining. I would have thought that, even if she had been a young male playing in the street. Also kudos to her for staying in such good shape when most don't ... and I loved the scenery.

I remember when you posted this previously. I really loved it and was glad to see it again - it's such a special capture.

The most unusual jobs and their often surprisingly high salaries by DarrenAlbanyin offbeat

$80, 000 sounded too low to me - this site suggests underwater welders would make $100,000 - $200,000 a year. http://www.underwaterweldinginformation.com/underwater-welding-salary/

On my screen, your post has a slide at the bottom and the answers you made are visible if you slide to the right.

I have no idea how you made it do that!

I posted elsewhere in this thread about how I have heard of sexualized cooing and referenced Marilyn Monroe, but others have said like you that it's a foreign idea to them. I wonder if it's old fashioned.

People may hiss to indicate that someone else should be quiet, but both hissing and the short /s/ sound are different to the more gentle shushing sound. There is a lot more space behind the teeth with /sh/ compared with /s/. People usually have their lips flatted and their mouth opened wider for /s/ whereas the lips are usually closer together and pursed for /sh/.

A lot of important books have been translated from one language to another, losing all the sounds of their words, yet remaining great.

I reckon moan sometimes sounds exactly the same whether due to pain or sex. You can only tell the difference from the context. If you are in a house and don't know what's happening in another room and just hear a single moan, you might make a mistake about the cause.

"Cooing sexily would be creepy" - except that some women use baby talk or childish behaviours with their sex partners. I always think of Marilyn Monroe as a great one for cooing. Talking breathily, in a high voice, using the front of the mouth, lots of round vowels. Pigeons coo and she talked in a similar way.

They do come in a range of sounds, yet, the word fart still somehow relates to them all - soft start, rumbling middle, abrupt ending.

A long time ago phones had a little round bell inside them - a small metal dome, with a piece of metal which repeatedly hit the dome very fast to make a ringing sound for attention. The ring probably lasted about 3 seconds stopped for a moment and then was repeated for a set time, or until the phone was answered. Later on, many phones changed to a flatter shape and they didn't have a bell inside them any more. Usually people still called the sound they made a ring, but if they were writing and trying to describe the actual sound (using more onomatopoeia), they might have said that it chirped or burped. Though it could be set loud it was a gentler sound than the older phones, not metallic - perhaps you might equate it to the sensation of burping which you have probably felt in your throat. A chirp has a higher pitch than a burp, but is a similar in having a rolling element to it and is a similar length (about a second?), not super short. As with the ring this sound was repeated for a set time or until the phone was answered. Now phones make a wide range of electronic noises. They often have the option of mimicking one of the older telephone sounds.

Apparently it's common for the bluebottle and blue sea slugs to float around together - and there is another blue creature that hangs with them as well - blue buttons - and also violet snails. You can sometimes find heaps of all of them stranded on a beach together.

The place I found them was the same beach where I'd been stung earlier. Very nasty stings - you can see a little bit of one of the two long stingers coming from the left hand side of the pomw in that photo. I had the two long stripes across my chest for a week or two afterwards.

Indeed. Still beardfaced was interested in the animal in the gif - which may or may not have a pouch.

I haven't googled this, but I do not believe the males do have pouches.

How many of you have paid for your meal at a wedding? My gf and I are expected to pay $80-100 each for our meals at an upcoming wedding, the bride says its an "unspoken tradition" by bootsmegamixin AskReddit

[–]Winga 0 points1 point ago

The old tradition in my part of Australia was that the bride's family paid for most things, the grooms's family paid for drinks at the reception, and the groom paid for cars. However, these days with many marrying so much later, and also so many second marriages, the whole thing is a lot more flexible. The bride and groom often pay a bigger proportion (or all the cost). At most of the weddings I've been to in the last 10 years the families have split the costs 50:50.

I know that where I live - in Western Australia - it was common for the children not to wear shoes in that era. Basically it was because keeping children in shoes was expensive, and there was no expectation that it would be a priority, though it was cold and uncomfortable at times.

I wondered why the boys were barefoot and the girls were not. I don't know - but maybe it was because the girls were wearing stockings - perhaps they were supposed to keep their legs covered?
