TROPHY CASE

Study finds coffee drinkers live longer by Badman2in Coffee

[–]WildVelociraptor 2 points3 points ago

They said "coffee drinkers live longer". They didn't say "coffee causes people to live longer".

That pretty clearly conveys a correlation and not causation.

Thank you. I think people read sensationalism into headlines like these.

The study was conducted on seniors aged 50-71 with a duration of one year. How does one assess longevity with a population born within a single year?

The study was conducted over the course of a year, not on a group of people born within a one year timespan.

Fair enough. But seeing as I lack savings, and will for some time, I want to have a backup plan.

I have to agree with BrainInAJar, there hasn't been any sort of coffee culture on a large scale in America until the past couple of decades. We certainly didn't have the love affair with coffee that Europeans, Arabs, Turks, and others have for centuries.

I'm new here, and I feel like moving in a coffee maker for myself would be kind of weird. Maybe after a few months I could do this.

With the travel french press, how do you avoid always getting the very fine grounds when you take a sip? I dislike how much silt I get with my regular french press, and I feel like it would be worse if it were all in my cup.

That's a good idea. I may end up going with that. It's a good compromise of cost and ease of use.

Well I need the job, and arson isn't on my bucket list. But I like the effort!

I envy your setup. I am an intern, and while I could possibly put the kettle in the break room, a french press would be kind of cumbersome. At least there is a water filter on the tap.

Thanks for the help!

I mean, I could boil water in the microwave and use a french press, but that's far too much time to spend making coffee at work. What else can I do?

That's a good point. Slightly more expensive, but it would work. So you vote for aeropress and a kettle?

I'm mainly trying to keep things low cost. But god knows Kcups get expensive in a heartbeat.

I don't follow your logic. I never said he was a good person, just that he was doing a good thing by giving his money away. I don't care why he does it, I just appreciate that he does.

That's very ambiguous, and doesn't really convey "using common sense."

I've always thought the "gateway" terminology was flawed, as it relies strongly on correlation and only slightly on causation in order to prove a point.

So are you saying you pay your bills with the line of credit, use your paycheck pay off the credit line, and then do the rest of your spending on a rewards card?

Also, I've seen where banks will link your credit card or line of credit to a checking account, but most seem to be there in case your account goes negative, and not to be used usually. That's not to say we don't have something like that down here, though.

At what point is the bill's author saying "use your common sense" ?

Who gives a damn why he's giving it away? The fact is that he is giving one of the largest fortunes in the world away. You don't get to nitpick over someone elses charitable act.

You bet. I was very happy when I looked at how much I would make.

I'm not sure I follow. I'm not in trouble with my student loans, I just don't think it makes sense to build savings when I have an unsubsidized student loan.

I'm not paying my loans with my credit cards. I have a balance from the fall, when my circumstances were different. I now have a much better paying job, and can afford my cost of living.
