Why are city/country names different in different languages? by W_I_L_L_Y_Din AskReddit

[–]W_I_L_L_Y_D[S] 0 points1 point ago

I don't see how the first one could account for any significant number of alteration to place names (at least at the global scale). Phonetically altering names for easier pronunciation seems almost disrespectful. For example your name is Bart, but I have a hard time pronouncing B's so I'll just call you Tim. Names shouldn't be altered to pronounce properly you should have to learn these things like how to order Gyros. So tasty. Third part makes sense for Mandarin, but so many other languages have no excuse.

I think this summarizes it quite nicely

Ok I do see what you are saying; however, at what point did someone know the name of a country in the foreign language and then decide to alter it and for what reason? Perhaps it made more sense in decades before, but with globalization I feel it becomes annoying having multiple names for countries/cities.

I see that for the Kanada example, but words like Roma are not a foreign type of pronunciation for English speakers.

La Hacienda is one of the only original remaining restaurants in queen west. It's atleast over 20 years old and it serves really good Mexican food. If a tattooed girl named Shannon serves you tell her your from Reddit

So a Tamil guy I work with always listens to Tamil radio and I always wondered how he gained access to it. A look closer at his radio showed it had AM, FM, and SM. What is SM? by W_I_L_L_Y_Din AskReddit

No I meant SM. That's why it makes it even more confusing.

My cousin works in an ER.

Man came in with head trauma and needed the pressure from his brain expanding to be relieved. The head ER doctor asked if my cousin wanted to try drilling into someone's skull to relieve the pressure. He of course, agreed. He said "it was just like drywall. You drill until you feel it go through then pull back."
