Teen secretly lived in AOL's HQ for 2 months, eating free food, using gym & showers, sleeping in conference rooms while working on his start-up. Everyone assumed he worked there by scientologist2in offbeat

I'm surprised AOL has money for security, and surprised they're worried about people coming into their buildings to steal their 'trade secrets'. About dial up modems.

And more recently I'd say jam bands (moe, phish, lotus, etc) are a pretty american phenomenon. Big band back in the day probably was as well.

Kanye was the first to achieve legitimate, inarguably great success without the minstrel show. Well not completely anyway. Most of his topics are universal and not afrocentric performed for white kids.

Personally I think that has nothing to do with him being minstrel, and more with him being some top 40 producer's wet dream.

She may be an excellent medical ninja, but honestly the only time she was useful was in the fight vs Sasori.

Seriously. I have all the episodes subbed, but i'd really like a nice torrent of the dubbed ones. I have most but some are messed up and have no audio. :(

Just a question about Kakashi. by doom8200in Naruto

[–]Vystril 0 points1 point ago

I kind of thought he got it because he's the copy ninja and Itachi used it on him. Maybe his skill at copying jutsu was the key instead of the traditional manner of gaining the Mangekyo Sharingan.

A Catholic priest, who was removed from the ministry for sexually abusing two young girls, now works for the TSA at Philadelphia airport by mepperin news

[–]Vystril 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, but it's not like the church did as much as possible to make sure that these cases never went to court. Not like some of them weren't BS, but I'm sure a bunch of them weren't as well.

Anyone else think there is a very simple solution to the Holly problem? by KaseyBin Eureka

I don't know, Holly seems like the kind of character who would think it would be super awesome to be in a robot body.

Or to most idiots looking at the billboard, they'll think Lamar sponsored or was behind it. Horrible billboard.

Unfortunately, those billboards don' say a damn thing about not voting for Lamar Smith or voting for his opponents, so I guess they're doing absolutely nothing.

Privatization of schools in Philadelphia. by ConstantEvolutionin socialism

[–]Vystril -1 points0 points ago

Just to be a contrasting opinion, I went to a private middle school, which was miles beyond the public school options available. (This was in upstate NY around Albany).

The private school was quite expensive, but they did an amazing job. For three years of middle school I had a computer lab and a computer science teacher (as opposed to 1 semester of AP computer science in a public high school at a lower level, that I went to afterwards -- I cant imagine where i'd be now if i my high school years had that kind of teacher and facilities). My private middle school CS teacher literally made me labs to do, on a week to week basis, because I was beyond what other students had done int the class.

The math and science (including biology, even thought this was a catholic middle school, taught me evolution and the rest) miles were beyond what I learned in high school. Even the religion classes I had to attend were more based on philosophy than sucking it up and doing what the pastor tells you to.

In short it was a great school. Not all private schools are horrible, and I wish teachers in public schools had the opportunity to do to other students what the teachers in that private school did for me.

Hah! Probably. :)

A Secular Understanding of Dependent Origination: #1 Ignorance by gomer11in Buddhism

[–]Vystril 1 point2 points ago

That's a bad understanding of rebirth. The stove is hot not only in future lifetimes, but also in this one.

A Secular Understanding of Dependent Origination: #1 Ignorance by gomer11in Buddhism

[–]Vystril 2 points3 points ago

I agree, and in other suttas the Buddha outright list and rejects those views, such as DN. 1: Brahmajāla Sutta: The All-embracing Net of Views.

This is why I brought up the idea of a bubble, there are enough internet armchair secular/atheist buddhists, and people have written enough material on the subject that you can get isolated within that viewpoint -- which is sad because the very first sutta in the Digha nikaya basically rejects it.

A Secular Understanding of Dependent Origination: #1 Ignorance by gomer11in Buddhism

[–]Vystril 1 point2 points ago

I don't doubt the Buddha taught it. What I do doubt is that a practitioner would need to explicitly concern themselves with the validity of rebirth to go from, say, clueless dumbass to arahant, in one lifetime.

I just read a book that referenced many, I'll collect some and post them later in an edit.

And I agree with everything else you posted.

Kind of for both, and this is why it matters. As an example sutta:Kosambi Sutta: At Kosambi (On Knowing Dependent Co-arising) it's pretty clear they see knowledge of dependent origination as the defining quality for whether or not one is an arahant.

I don't know if realization is possible if you're looking for a faulty view, which is why I think it's better to put aside the question instead of clinging to no-rebirth, or at least be open to the possibility of rebirth; or your meditation might be pointing you in the wrong direction.
