What do they teach you in design school? (I learned art direction; am curious about the design/production aspect as well) by DatLe_ArtDirectorin Design

[–]UncleBob1978 2 points3 points ago

Are you sure you went to design school? Seems as though you went to advertising school.

͏

My school is a little different. They teach you some background stuff, like history & the like, before moving you on to the basics - learning to use the programs, typography, color theory, and so on. As I was already adept in that part, I didn't need to learn that part of the process. There's even acrylic/watercolor/oil-pastel/etc.. painting sessions, model-making sessions, etc... but I didn't care much for them either except to have stupid fun. Anyway they gradually progress you from using the programs, to building simple stuff like magazine covers & fonts, to bigger things like redesigning corporate logos & related collateral, & finally to full identity development (from concept to final, usually single-handedly, but sometimes in groups). Although we touched upon art direction, I feel we didn't learn as much as we needed to (it's not a great school). Guess I'll have to learn when I'm at the job. As for ideas, they aren't killed right away, to the detriment of learning perhaps, but our instructors do try to guide us through the process of developing better & more imaginative concepts.

The bottle appears to be floating, try putting a subtle angled-shadow behind it that fades away. Do the same for the bike.

Damn you're right, they do look like a few of those laceless tall boots. Well crap, can't use those where I'm from (hot+humid weather). Thanks, appreciate it.

I can't seem to find any info on that... is there something similar from other brands? Thanks :)

Edit: Seems you're right, they're boots of some kind. Well since I can't wear those with my city's kind of weather, I'll check out other alternatives. Thanks again!

I remember structures similar to this in my city long ago, these days not as much. It is depressing as fuck, crowded, and almost slum-like. No thank you.

͏

If they can stack all those buildings in a block into a single tall thin structure (so one tall thin tower per block), that would be much better. There'll be more space on the ground for parks trees, recreation, air will be cleaner, more sunlight throughout, heck even futuristic, etc...

This seems like something that you really should learn to figure out on your own. But ok, how about house/building architecture?

Pok Fu Lam in the estate heh. Small world, but then again there are millions in this little tiny dot of ours. I take that bus sometimes on my way to design class.... if it isn't full from the folks working at Cyberport.

Love that bus. It's fast as hell, especially when it hops over the overpass in Wong Chuk Hang. Good time to take it is in the early afternoon, before the crazy crowds of early evening. Hop on, then hop off at Cyberport... then have a good walk in the park on a sunny day. Heck maybe even watch a flick at Broadway. Shit that reminds me... I need to watch Battleship tomorrow afternoon.

What does burning out feel like and how do you recover? by designer_burningoutin Design

[–]UncleBob1978 2 points3 points ago

For me, getting burned out is a feeling similar to that of tumbling down a hillside. You're on top, and suddenly you're falling down. I find that I am utterly unable to create anything interesting. When you're on a roll, you create something you never thought possible for your skill level, then you keep topping that off with other design styles and projects. It's like climbing a hill. When you get burned out, suddenly the inspiration stops, you try to get things rolling again, but every design you make just appears... lackluster, like stuff you already did before that you're just repeating. I haven't been able to find a solution to this until recently. The solution is so keep designing, even if it sucks, keep going at it with your mind off. It may take months to recover, but eventually you find yourself. At that point you take a step back & find your passion in design & why you enjoy doing it. At that point, you should forget about the burnout & start designing again like a boss.

Honestly it's not a bad movie at all. I personally loved it. Absolutely deserves a sequel, if not a trilogy. I mean why not? Other lesser films got theirs. Finally a promising franchise gets released that isn't some hit novel for tweens, & suddenly basically a zero chance of followups? Guess it's just the way things go....

How could I make the 3D-ish look from this logo in photoshop? by zachharrisonin Design

[–]UncleBob1978 0 points1 point ago

The best most accurate & most easiest way is offset alignment. Create your text at say 400% normal, and apply an outer stroke to it to the desired size. Next, flatten the style by right-clicking the effects layer & selecting "Create Layer". You'll have two layers, the top being the text, and the bottom being the stroke. Duplicate the stroke layer & offset by 1px (move the layer 1px down & 1px right). Flatten both stroke layers. Duplicate that again, and offset by 2px this time. Flatten once again. Repeat with 4px, then 8px, then 16px, then 32px, and so on until however much you like. Once done, select & shrink both the text layer & the offset layer by 25% - this will create an antialiasing effect on the edge of the rough stroke, & also shrink back your design to the original size. Of course, doing it in Illustrator is far faster.
