Chill? I don't think I was that intense, just stating my opinion. Throwing out free speech would mean the government stepped in to censor. Telling a corporation your opinion, then them deciding to act on it or not, is just more free speech, not less.

I'm glad Rush Limbaugh's advertisers came off his show--they were exercising their own free speech, and it sent a clear message regarding where they stood in response to Rush's comments.

Right. And thanks to free speech, we have the right to tell Nike he's shouldn't be the kind of person who represents their brand image if they want to keep our respect and business.

What's the best wedding website? by knm_jpc_071in weddingplanning

I second you on ewedding...I wasted some time on that site before I realized the services I'd need would be gone in a couple weeks. :/

mywedding.com seems great so far though, and seems a bit more user friendly than weddingwire.

What if the commercials were marketed like this? Would it still be 'just a joke'? by athijezarin Feminism

[–]Thermodynamo 9 points10 points ago

Saying a product is for guys isn't as bad, to me, as saying a product ISN'T for girls. I mean I understand that companies try to market to certain groups, I don't really see a problem there, it's the way this ad is unapologetically saying "women are not cool enough for this product" that's unacceptable.

Nah, we don't have to agree on everything to be on the same team--I've never been a fan of the word cunt myself, but in college, when I hung out with mostly lesbians I used the words faggot and gay in an ironically negative way all the time--though now that I'm surrounded by mostly straight people and my queerness is less obvious, I've phased it out since I kept feeling uncomfortable about the impression they might get about it. It's not that I necessarily think straight people can't use those words...but I think if you're going to use them, it's best if the people who hear you use it understand that you have a good understanding what it's like to be called those things in a serious, mean way. I guess I think that's what makes them okay to "reclaim" and use.

Words are words and we all have our preferences...but at the end of the day I think it's far more important who's saying it and how...and even more than that, what you're really about as a person.

I'm so glad you exist. Especially since just yesterday I had an exchange (not the first) with a reddit user who makes it his business to follow feminists around on reddit with hateful messages and post on feminist subreddits about how women are lazy spenders of men's money and feminists are evil man-haters out to destroy civilization. :(

Thanks for brightening my day...conversations like these help me keep hold of the fact that there are people out there trying to make things better!

I feel like we probably agree on most things, but of course have different perspectives. But I'd like to think that's because we're different people and not because we're of different genders or use a different word for our beliefs.

Yup, it sure looks that way!! :)

I agreed with everything in your post (glad to see it's not just women irritated by Dr. Pepper 10 and cleaning/home improvement commercials!), and boy, I am a broken record about the injustice of this myself:

How I'm "supposed" to behave as a man, how I'm "supposed" to dress and what kind of alcohol I should drink and "isn't it funny how men, like, totally think about sex constantly?"

I couldn't agree more, the expectation of strict manliness is harmful to men because it gives you a more restricted range of expression. As much as people enjoy claiming that men are brain-controlled by sex, all the evidence of my experiences suggest that this is a severe overstatement, but God forbid you don't go along with that narrative even if it isn't your experience. Or, you're in the mood for a delicious daquiri at the bar? Too bad, unless you're also in the mood for people to make fun of you. Money a little tight? That sucks, cause if you want that girl to like you you gotta buy dinner on the first date. You think you'd have more fun in a dancing class than a baseball field? Do it at your own risk. Women can wear pants and makeup but men can't even think of wearing a skirt or covering a blemish! UGH. I don't know how people still have these expectations when the world has changed so much. Then in addition to holding men back from full enjoyment and potential, the whole "femininity is embarrassing" thing is also pretty insulting to women, for fairly obvious reasons, since the implication is that feminine things aren't as good or cool as masculine things (which is part of why I think people are more accepting of women doing masculine things, because masculine things are associated with being cool and strong, and who wouldn't want to be strong?--but men are much less accepted if they want to do feminine things, because who would want to be seen as weak?). So in short...everyone loses.

Just wanted to let you know that even though you've spoken to some feminists who are more interested in focusing on the suffering of women...there's a lot of feminists with a lot of viewpoints, and those folks don't represent all femninists. Kind of the way two people can call themselves anything (Christian, for example) but not necessarily hold the same, or necessarily even similar, beliefs. For me (and I think a growing number of young feminists like myself--I'm in my 20s) gender egalitarianism is synonymous with our view of contemporary feminism--in fact sometimes, since the word "feminist" has such a stigma, sometimes I will use the word egalitarian instead if I think it will be better or more quickly understood. Anyway, gender egalitarianism is what's increasingly being taught to young women in colleges about the evolving heart of feminism, and based on many conversations I've had with young feminists, I believe it's what many young women are coming to on their own, even though the suffering of non-women is still not talked about quite often enough in feminist circles (in my opinion). It's my belief that it's really where we need to be to make progress going forward, so I'm pretty vocal about making sure that men's (and transgender) issues get "air time" in feminist discourse.

Sorry that's so long...TLDR: I like you, let's be friends.

Just wanted to speak to your comment because at the end there you mentioned that all of this being sexist is lost on feminists of today, and implied that we're only interested in protecting women being hurt, even at the expense of men. I strongly disagree. In fact, sexist discrimination against men is just a big a part of why I'm a feminist as discrimination against women, and transgender people too for that matter.

I'm a feminist, and I totally agree that there needs to be an understanding that it's just as possible for women to physically attack men, and that there's a cultural conditioning that leads women to think it's okay to physically attack men AND leads men to think they aren't allowed to fight back (not to mention a culture which reinforces this), which certainly leads to problems which should not be downplayed or ignored. And the fact that men don't have resources or even credibility in those situations is absolute bullshit, and as a feminist that's a huge issue for me which I am outspoken about wanting to see changed, like yesterday.

Hate crime laws are complicated...but as an FYI, not all feminists support them unequivocally. They're sort of like affirmative action laws in that I can see why people put them in place, and because these are very complicated problems to solve, and I can understand why a crude band-aid type of law would be seen as necessary...but these laws meant to solve certain problems also generate other problems, so they are not ideal solutions. So in short, not all feminists are gung-ho about hate crime laws and generalized laws in general, even if the goal is protecting women from a very real issue of domestic victimization. The fact is--sometimes there's not a great way to solve a problem, and everything you come up with sucks in some way or another, so my best answer so far is that you have to keep thinking and assessing and trying to come up with better solutions, and be able to address it when the solution to a problem causes problems of its own.

Just wanted to put it out there that people seem to think that all feminists are some unified front, unscrupulously looking for any and all advantages for women, fair or unfair...but that's really not the case. In fact, feminism is a movement which has a lot of different people with a lot of different opinions BUT which has changed a lot over the last 50 years, and which has the overall goal of equality for men, women, and transgender people, because sexism hurts everyone in one way or another. People just have different ideas about how those goals can best be achieved. I will say that a lot of feminists from my generation are like me, fierce advocates of gender egalitarianism and a focus which includes but also extends beyond women, to include the suffering of men and transgender folk due to sexism and our cultural over-emphasizing of the importance of gender norms. Academically, contemporary feminism is often called third-wave feminism...very different from the bra-burning anger of the 60s and 70s, but unfortunately our public image just hasn't kept up with the changes.

Just wanted to put my two cents out there...

Feminist here, I can't believe this is how the police reacted to the situation, that shit is SEXIST and no mistake. Just because you're male and she's female, they believe YOU must have been at fault and don't even bother to say, arrest her, just in case you're telling the truth?? Couldn't do that, because everyone knows men are violent aggressors and women are passive victims...bullshit.

This is exactly the shit I'm fighting against...UGH!!

wha...until I replied to your comment, I had literally posted just the one comment in this thread. Whose comment history are you looking at?? Also, I am extremely vocal about equality for men on reddit, and the equal importance of addressing the way sexism negatively affects men, so really I beg to differ on the "anti-male" swipes you claim to see...but I'm not surprised you see it that way, since in your Bigot World, feminism and "anti-male" are synonyms, and if someone calls themselves a feminist, to you that means they're man-haters no matter how many times they speak up for ending sexism against men.

Shoo troll. Shoo.

You belong to a hate movement and you're calling me a bigot?

Since feminism is in no way a hate movement except in your mind...well...yeah. I am.

You're obviously unable to accept anything outside of what you already believe about feminists. I posted to show sympathy to this guy for being treated wrongly because of his gender, and you show up with no motive other than to tell me how much feminists like me HATE MEN and how we want to see this sort of thing happen, and as a bonus, call me an idiot. It somehow doesn't even register that I wasn't looking for an argument, just stopping by to express sympathy and shared outrage against this gender-based inequality. In your eyes, even my innocuous comment somehow illustrates how feminists are out to get men? You're on another planet, dude.

And let me be clear--I did not mean I was trying to be supportive of YOU, a hate-spouting bigot. The hatred and bile you spout isn't anything I'd want to touch with a ten-foot-pole, let alone actually support. I was trying to be supportive of the OP, who if his story is true, experienced injustice because of sexism, the very thing I am trying to end (since as I've told you before, I'm trying to end sexism against men, women and transfolk--that is, everyone, even bigots like you!).

You run around spreading lies about what feminism is. Anyone can do that, Hitler did it to the Jews, white people did it to black people, people say awful, totally fictitious things about gay people and Muslims--hell, any Joe Schmoe can make shit up about a group of people and tell it like it's fact but it doesn't make it true.

I have engaged with you too many times on this stuff and I refuse to subject myself to your intolerance and hatred any further. I don't know why I'm talking to you right now, it's a waste of time, because you are just a hateful troll. Please...go back to your cave and quit bothering people that are just trying to do the best they can in a difficult world.

Good for you. That's all I'm saying--we all have our own ways of interpreting things other people say--some people make more assumptions than others, and others are more cautious...but for better or worse, and regardless of how much info you've gathered, we all have to make judgments at some point about what other people mean.

Ugh you are tiresome, why must you constantly follow feminists around on reddit posting on our comments? Live and let live, dude. I swear we're not out to get you, I'm trying to be supportive here, jesus.

Also, nobody said it was LAW for cops to arrest the wrong person, don't blame feminists for shit that we had nothing to do with. Those cops most likely arrested this guy because they were sexist enough to assume that women must be helpless and passive, and men must be strong and violent, so they couldn't even conceive of a situation where he might be the victim, which is SEXISM and obviously NOT feminism. I know you refuse to hear it but believe it or not feminists want EQUALITY which means men and women both should be treated with equal respect.

It's sexism. Not feminism. You've proven yourself to be a bigot on these issues many times over.
