Quick Sandy Bridge graphics question: by Jceggbert5in hardware

[–]TheHeretic 0 points1 point ago

Remember that it was a 2500 and not a 2500k, they do have different graphics power. (HD 2000 vs 3000)

Linux actually has a small advantage, unfortunately I do not have the laptop dual booted anymore so I cannot give hard numbers. Also I did not run the open source driver as that resulted in video output defaulting to HDMI rather than my laptops LCD. I have not used a non Ubuntu distro.

Was your laptop a DV7? DV6000?

I am sorry but 100c for hours after? That is a load of crap. Heat sinks don't stay at 100c without some sort of thermal input or cooling failure. Also you are blaming AMD for a cooling problem when in reality it is either your fault, or your laptop manufactures fault. My Asus k53-ta runs minecraft on the A6 APU at 30+ fps in most places running off the APU alone, not with the discrete GPU running. That is with Normal render distance and smooth lighting on. For comparison, this lenovo gets 22fps, also the fps would tank down to 5-10 when panning. I was surprised to see SB do so terribly with Minecraft. If you want to play Minecraft on it, I have to recommend AMD Trinity or Ivy Bridge... or any discrete GPU

(Also keep in mind the 2500 is a desktop GPU with Intel HD 2000 graphics and not a laptop CPU)

Finally, AMD fusion has no problems on Linux, my A6 runs Ubuntu 11.04 with no major issues but Ubuntu does not support turning off the GPU in my laptop so the battery life takes a significant hit (3hs vs 5hs)

Looking for suggestions on RAID controller: Need RAID5 capability with normal SATA2 HDDs by rift321in hardware

[–]TheHeretic 0 points1 point ago

Is that even possible? I am not 100% familiar with VM software but doesn't it require a filesystem in place in order to put the virtual hard disk on it? I didn't know you could pass raw disks right to the VM.

Also I would image performance to be terrible. It would probably use a lot of CPU time.

So he needs 2tb of faster data transfer, even though he already has an SSD (a 240gb one too, he can fit a lot of games on it)? Doesn't make much sense to me.

[–]TheHeretic 2 points3 points ago

You could do that, you just need a small machine to host your data system. But this would probably blow through your budget.

The problem you are going to have with $100-$150 raid cards is that most of them are software based, so its just as good as using your motherboard.

Thought about ZFS? You could do zraid1 which allows you to suffer 1 HDD failure and still operate. It automatically stripes and mirrors the data. Additionally you can add a cache drive to increase performance of frequently accessed items. Zraid2 allows you to suffer 2 HDD failures which is really nice. There are more features as well that make ZFS amazing for massive amounts of data storage.

Only problem is you would need to run it on Linux/Unix most likely, but you should probably keep your bulk data separate from your OS anyways.

How many hard drives are you looking to run total? 3-5?

Owned a E-4200 for ~12 months. About 8 months in it started having a hard time detecting the ethernet port that connected to my modem, tried new cables, new modem, etc, ended up just plugging it into another port since I didn't need port forwarding. About 2 months after that I came home to see it power cycling over and over and over.

RMA was a pain too because they have you call tech support, which took way too long given that it was as dead as dead gets.

Went with a N56U after it failed, so far so good, it has amazing range for something with no external antennas. We will see how long it lasts though.

Nope, do not pry the keys off. Your best bet is compressed air, otherwise buy a new keyboard :(
