Do you care that I don't believe? by heidaveyin Christianity

[–]TheGrammarBolshevik 4 points5 points ago

I understand that you do not believe in God, but you have to admit, if God is real and who He says He is, that is a pretty arrogant, ballsy, and unreasonable position to hold, because it implies your reason (I am sure you're very intelligent, nonetheless) is greater than His.

It doesn't imply that in the slightest. All it implies is that A_Prattling_Gimp and God have access to different information.

I know better than Stephen Hawking what color my socks are. But that doesn't mean my reason is greater than Stephen Hawking's.

A little question about Gödel's theorems not being so terrible for science. by acteon29in philosophy

propositional calculus is provably complete

That's a different sense of the term "complete." There are systems that allow you to derive all and only valid formulas. But this is different from the completeness involved in Goedel's incompleteness theorems, which is the ability to derive F or ~F for any sentence F.

The distinction is the one made between semantic completeness and syntactic completeness here.

What does this have to do with Goedel's theorems?

On an inside pitch, a batter is required to make an attempt to get out of the way of the pitch.

In order to be awarded a base, yes. But it should still never be a foul ball. If a batter is hit by a pitch outside the strike zone without making a reasonable attempt to avoid it, then it's a ball.

The odds might be lower. I'm not sure that means it's harder. (Is it "hard" to win the lottery?)

God rules the universe. Isn't that enough? by Queenkiwiin Christianity

[–]TheGrammarBolshevik 0 points1 point ago

Why do we fight and argue about free will vs predestination, young earth vs old earth, etc? Why does it matter how God rules the universe when all that matters is that God does rule the universe?

Oh, but there are a lot of things about how God rules the universe that are absolutely central to Christianity. Would you say that it doesn't matter, for example, whether or not God rules the universe in part through the Holy Spirit, or whether he ruled the universe by making his son incarnate and sending him to be crucified and resurrected? After all, you could easily believe that God rules the universe without holding any particular opinion on those things. But those questions are undeniably important to the Christian faith.

I think you're drawing a false dichotomy when you say that we don't need to know all the answers. I doubt any Christian thinks that we should have all the answers. But by definition, a Christian will believe that we have some of them. So what people are disagreeing about is not whether we should have answers, but what the answer is where they think we do know the answer. For example, the Catholic Church teaches that Mary was protected from the moment of her conception from the stain of original sin. To a non-Catholic, this may seem like the sort of thing that we have no reason to worry about. But if you're a Catholic, you'll think this claim was revealed by God to the Church. That would make it pretty important, no?

OK, but it's not like people didn't understand that an infant has to grow up from something smaller before it's born. And abortion is mentioned in both the Hippocratic Oath and at least one early Christian document.
