TROPHY CASE

I honestly don't think XKCD is funny. What're some opinions you have that usually get you downvoted to oblivion? by drakeblood4in AskReddit

[–]Tetzel 1 point2 points ago

Actually, a commenter was bombarded with PM's asking for nude pics of his underage girlfriend. There was no 'raid' of posting CP. The only thing SA did was alert the media (Anderson Cooper) and 4chan weren't involved at all.

Erm, what?

Your argument now revolves around you thinking she wanted unsolicited creepy sexual objectifying comments because we 'don't know', which is obviously false. Just look at the picture she posted. Why do you think she wants sexual comments on that? Why would that even cross your mind?

for instance interpreting your remarks as a quite poorly dressed desire to present yourself as a sanctimonious defender of public morals

Please don't skirt around your desire to call me names. If you think calling out your creepy (downvoted) comment is me being a 'whiteknight' then just say so.

Maybe you know her in person and try to appear to her as a defender of her honour. I can only make interpretations.

I don't know her, but i do know what's socially appropriate to say.

You are right that I could have said other things, but it is up to me to decide how I express what I think on the basis of my interpretation. If I choose to express that "I know that you are seeking attention and I want you to know that I know it", it is surely my right to do so.

I also have the right to tell you that it's 'fucking creepy', which I did, but that you took issue with. I'm just here to educate you about the things you say and how you say them. I never said you had no right to be creepy, I was just telling you that you were being creepy. I think we both know that what you said was inappropriate and misogynistic, but now you're falling on the whole 'it's my right to say whatever the fuck i want' argument, which you then undermined yourself by taking issue with me exercising my right to call you out on your creepy comment.

My clue is the use of big scary words that you put in the tl;dr, as well as you engagement in replying

hahahahah what? What 'big scary' words did i use? You think misogynistic and objectifying are 'big scary' words?

The comic nature of the character that used it means that you cannot take it seriously, does it not?

But it isn't a good joke. It's just creepy 'you're a girl. I want to sex you' wrapped up in lame humour which takes no wit to say.

You say it to anyone in any context, and there is practically no possibility that it would be taken literally, and not ironically. And irony produces a reversal. We could submit it to a poll, but I guarantee you that no one would take quoting Joey literally. Of course, it may happen people do not get irony.

But this isn't a friend or someone you know. When you say these things on-line you're saying them into an empty space which could have any person on the other end. You also fail to understand what 'appropriate' means. It isn't appropriate to say 'how you doing' to a girl you don't know when she posts a picture. It isn't appropriate to say it to a random woman in the street. The person in the picture is the equivalent of that woman. You don't know her. You don't need to make a creepy sexual comment. It isn't appropriate.

Another thing, there is nothing "inappropriate, misogynistic" in it. Giving attention to someone who is asking for it is normal social behaviour. And it is objectifying only to an extent that posting your own picture is objectification of oneself.

Incorrect on all counts. This woman posted a picture of herself and a famous actor, in regards to her journalism career. You saw this as a opportunity to comment on her looks, trying to 'hit on' her on-line. This was inappropriate and objectified the woman in the picture because you turned her into a sexual object which you were lusting after.

Giving attention to someone who asked for it is normal social behaviour.

I've already taught you about what 'appropriate attention' is haven't I? Punching someone is a form of attention. Punching someone who talks to you isn't the APPROPRIATE FORM OF ATTENTION. Likewise, making these comments on the picture wasn't the APPROPRIATE FORM ON ATTENTION you should or could have been giving. It was MISOGYNISTIC because you made the woman into a SEXUAL OBJECT with your comment.

tl;dr (in easy, non-scary words)

your comment was not appropriate or needed. It was creepy and your arguments are based on false premises. Your attempt at humour was the equivalent of shouting 'boobs' out loud at a woman and thinking it's funny. You wouldn't say your comment to someone in the street, so don't say it here.

[–]Tetzel 0 points1 point ago

Nah.

Your whole point revolves around the fact this girl posted this picture for attention. Now let's think about ti. Surely every single thing everyone does here on reddit is for attention? Karma = attention. Pics upvoted = attention. Everything everyone does is for attention, and in that regard you're right.

However. There's different kinds of attention isn't there? When you go into a shop and talk to someone you're looking for attention. You're wanting them to give you attention. To pay attention to you. You do not want them to punch you in the face. But punching someone in the face is attention isn't it? However, it's not the kind of attention you're looking for. This girl was not looking for creepy sexual attention, she was looking for attention about the fact she got to a point in her career where she interview Sir Ian McKellen, one of the most famous stage and screen actors in the world. You of course try to justify your *unwanted and socially appropriate * remark by saying ' was acknowledging this solicitation of attention' as if somehow your acknowledgement was appropriate. It wasn't. You could have talked about any number of things in regards to this photo, but instead you decided to creepily hit on the OP with a remark which has a history of being used sexually. You cannot remove the phrase 'how you doin' from its context of Friends. Where it was used by Joey purely to display sexual interest. Your argument that 'You have to be careful interpreting sexual messages, because there was 0 in my remark' is false because the words themselves hold that power. Every comment you leave referencing Joey from Friends in that way is going to be interpreted sexually because that's the sole use of that phrase in the show.

Your argument also relies on a false premise. You say 'Id she wanted to express admiration to an actor...' Who says that's what she wanted? She obviously was proud of herself as she got to interview the actor, don't you understand that? Just like every post here which is 'look who i ran into' (picture of OP and a celebrity) isn't trying to showcase your love for an actor. It's showcasing the fact that you met them.

tl;dr if you think your attention is warranted and not creepy then you're very very wrong. Your comment was inappropriate, misogynistic, objectifying, and creepy.

[–]Tetzel 0 points1 point ago

Yeah pretty much. Your comment was unnecessary, creepy (unwarranted, unsolicited 'hitting on' someone on-line just because they're a girl), and completely off topic. This girl didn't post this picture so people on-line could comment on her looks, she posted it because it's a cool picture of Sri Ian McKellen and herself. People who took this as an opportunity to comment on her looks objectified her, and obviously don't actually care about how cool the picture is. The only thing you seemed to care about (with your comment) was telling everyone in this thread about how you and your penis felt about a woman who put a picture on a website.

Why would you do that? I mean really. If a girl came up to you in the street to ask for directions would you say 'Well, hello there. How YOU doing?' how about if they came into your place of work? There's a time and a place for saying that kinda stuff (well actually, there kind of isn't as it's almost wholly inappropriate) and saying in on this picture isn't one of them.

It's pretty simple. To judge whether or not your comment is going to be creepy just ask yourself:

'would i say this to someone in real life if they showed me this picture (or whatever) of themselves?'

If the answer is no, then don't say it. And if the answer is yes, it still might be creepy and inappropriate.

Who doesn't like a happy ending? Principal apologizes for suspending 60 students, rescinds suspensions. by phillybillyin news

[–]Tetzel 0 points1 point ago

Not really. FordSVT1 was clearly talking about mistakes ' in judgment that ended up doing nothing to hurt anyone.'

The mistakes of the Titanic costs hundreds of people their lives, there's no real logic in comparing the two as they're two totally different circumstances. FordSVt1 also never said there was any limit to forgiveness, but firing this woman over a mistake which caused no one any harm seems to be excessive.

I'm going to a wedding in England(Manchester) this summer and I need some direction. by doorscanbecoloursin malefashionadvice

[–]Tetzel 0 points1 point ago

Depends on the dresscode. I live in Manchester, where is the wedding/reception happening? If it's somewhere like The Midland, or The Hilton then expect to wear a full suit, but if the bride and groom have opted for a more casual wedding then you may be able to get away with blazer and trousers, instead of a full suit.

And if it is full suit and tie business, there's nothing to say you can't spruce it up a bit and wear something more modern and slim-fitting then a conservative suit, but then again, it depends on the wedding.

Just because you're black doesn't mean you get to say what is and isn't racist to other black people. It's not only racist if you do the lips, the blackface in general (exaggerated red lips or no) is still known to be horribly racist.

He did say it, but he said it about Christianity and Christians who were offended. It's then commonly taken out of context and used to justify racism and sexism etc. Stephen Fry has also been vocal about being AGAINST the use of homophobic slurs, which obviously goes against many redditors perceived meanings of his quote.

People always lament bad film adaptations of good books. But what are some examples of superior cinematic adaptations? by CheatasaurusRexin literature

[–]Tetzel 2 points3 points ago

Maybe this doesn't count but I think Throne of Blood by Kurosawa does a good job at being a film INSPIRED by Macbeth, but not an actual adaptation. Same for Polanski's Macbeth which I think does a better job with the source material but ultimately fails at fully dealing with the issues in the original text.

I wrote an essay about these two films in the context of adaptations of Macbeth if anyone is interested on me expanding my thoughts. On my phone right now but if anyone fancies discussing them or just wants to hear my thoughts I think it'd be cool (though not worth it's own thread)

Wasnt there also something about him making the book 21 chapters (age of maturity) and the publishers removal of the final chapter ruining that? Maybe I'm making that up but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

The blazer/denim thing was literally just to see if the actual blazer could work casually, i didn't actually wear it out or anything. It's a suit jacket originally so it was just something i wanted to try to see if it could be pulled off as a single blazer (thought i might have to change the buttons for it to work or something maybe?)

Not too sure about the shoes myself. Got em for £130 down from £245 though so I don't know whether i want to return them. Do you think the colour is versatile enough?

The suit I'm wearing is definitely the same colour (i'm not sure what happened to the lighting but it's definitely a two-piece matching suit of the same colour) but a lot of people had the same thought you did when i originally posted it. Here's a pic of the pants/jacket together in a different room, which has worse, but kinda better lighting.
