TROPHY CASE

So I snapped a picture of a grey eagle yesterday, look at the names on BOTH street signs! by mynexgenin pics

Cooper's Hawk or possibly Sharp-Shinned Hawk (ignore the title of the vid) in my backyard. I still think the bird on the sign is too small.

You sure that's salmon? I've never seen grilled salmon that wasn't pink. Looks pretty damn good regardless.

TtH Spoiler Question by AllWrong74in Malazan

[–]Sucka27 0 points1 point ago*

This could be anyone

Sure, but you could tell Erikson was trying to create mystery and get the reader guessing at who this actually was. It's not the first or last time he does it.

I don't recall any mention of Dassem being Dal Honese before NoK.

It's on page 196 in my book. "Dassem Ultor--who was, like Kellanved, of Dal Honese blood" Remembering back, when I was trying to figure out if it was Dassem I noted that they probably wouldn't have specifically mentioned Dassem's race and Traveller's race within a few hundred pages of each other if there wasn't something there. Might be why it is mentioned, might not.

He was also there with a bunch of Malazan soldiers, Cotillion also says they are in hiding when he speaks to Kellanved later. He speaks of Traveller as though his presence is immense. It was starting to make sense to me. I had suspicions since GOTM that Dassem would make an entrance at some point in the series because of how awesome he is/was.

I think it was a great intrigue created by Erikson. I was pretty sure at this point it was Dassem Ultor, a bunch of the regulars at the Malazan Empire forums agree. But like I said, it wasn't supposed to be obvious or anything. I probably shouldn't have said that you should have known at this point, I was being a smart ass. It was there though.

One of the reasons I love these books is because stuff like this is all over the place. You're right about the Hound, btw. Another case of my memory being sketchy. Some of what I said earlier was typed before I actually looked it up. :-)

TtH Spoiler Question by AllWrong74in Malazan

[–]Sucka27 0 points1 point ago*

The closest thing to a clue that a first time reader might pick up on would probably be that Cotillion knew who he was.

And that he whooped some serious ass without batting an eyelash. I remember thinking, "ok, this is someone special, probably not who he says he is." Also:

  • His name Traveller suggests he's hiding or trying to lay low. Almost like he's a famous person who doesn't want to be found. Cotillion also mentions that the people there are hiding.

  • It mentions he's Dal Honese. It mentions in HOC that Dassem was also Dal Honese. "Dassem Ultor – who was, like Kellanved, of Dal Honese blood."

  • The Hound of Shadow present "cowered." If you know much about the series (which I'm sure you do), you'll know that Hounds don't cower to just anyone.

  • He calls Cutter "mortal."

  • Cotillion has a history with him and knows he will need no help in the fight.

  • He's on the island with a bunch of Malazan soldiers.

I'm not saying it was obvious, but it was there. I'm not the only one that picked it up on first read. Man, just talking about this scene makes me want to read the book again. I loved this HOC.

Yes, understood. This isn't ideal though. Instead of acquiring fat reserves through shoddy diet, with hopes of eventually burning said reserves as you accumulate muscle (which isn't just done automatically), I'd suggest a high protein/carb/calorie diet while you work out.

For example.

TtH Spoiler Question by AllWrong74in Malazan

[–]Sucka27 0 points1 point ago

You're right, it actually should have been sooner. :-) I mistook the Traveller on Drift Avalii scenes happening in MT, not House of Chains. There were enough clues there to warrant suspicion if not being fairly certain this was Dassem.

So let me get this right, I eat like this and chase it with milk every night, and don't work out? Wouldn't that just make me fat? I know several people who might qualify as skinny and fat. This just sounds like a recipe for that.

It's comments like this that make me want to take as many pictures as possible of me in mid air doing can openers. I'd like to make a huge collage of them to give to my daughters because when I'm gone, that's what I want them to remember, that brief moment hair flying, eyes wide joy. Maybe I'll switch it to launching them in the air like you mention. Your dad sounds awesome.

I've heard a lot of people describe the event you mention as traumatic for them. I thought it was almost funny (can't remember why), but to me it was obvious he was no longer a relevant character so it was easy to off him with no possibility of him coming back to life in any form, as seems common in the series.

One of his heirs is Andrew Luster, rapist. The guy that dog the bounty hunter went to Mexico to catch, did, and got arrested for doing so because bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico.

I only know this because one of my friends is Luster's doppelganger and has gone by "Luster" in our circle for as long as I can remember. I didn't even know his name was something else for 3 years after knowing him.

ELI5: Marijuana. by Barajas93in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sucka27 0 points1 point ago*

I'll put it to you like this. If the cost of the war on drugs is far higher than the cost of increased healthcare due to increased marijuana usage (only the delta between current usage and total usage after legalization applies), you have a net benefit when legalizing. In the case of the US, there is a huge net benefit. Using Canada as an example of this is extremely misleading, they spend nothing on their war on cannabis use.

You also cannot prove that there is an increase in healthcare costs at all, especially because most of the people that would use marijuana if it is legalized already use it. Remember, you used the word increased. Simply being from a "pro-legalization" site means nothing. Maybe they just threw that number out so they could say "see? look how generous we're being with our numbers, and it still costs way less than these legal substances." The fact is that there aren't even any medical journals published that prove marijuana is bad for you more than say, eating at MacDonalds (which is probably worse now that I think about it). The tar from smoking isn't beneficial, but it also isn't bad enough to warrant hospitalizations of any significant number. Also, any negative affects to minors cannot be included because their use would still be illegal. Do you know exactly how many of the people included in your link needed medical attention because of something marijuana use actually caused? Of course you don't. I'm speculating that the majority of any medical cost marijuana might cause has to do with treating dependence. Something you find in myriad other substances, many perfectly legal.

Again, to be absolutely clear, I am not and I have not made a single claim that legalization would have overall negative economic consequences.

Yes you did. You mentioned increased health care costs after the current cost associated with policing the crime of marijuana use. That asserts there is a net cost. In Canada. If law enforcement costs weren't mentioned, you could argue almost anything has a cost associated with it. These grapes made my tummy hurt because I'm allergic. Let's ban grapes.

Oh, and finally. This is from PBS.

For example, a recent Ontario study found that annual health care costs resulting from cannabis use were small ($8 million) when compared to those for tobacco ($1.07 billion ) and alcohol ($442 million).

That is insignificant, especially when you consider how many of them went to the hospital because they thought they were having a heart attack (common for noobs), but actually weren't.

ELI5: Marijuana. by Barajas93in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sucka27 0 points1 point ago*

It's not like I said that all marijuana users get drug-related diseases or that treatment for marijuana-related conditions was any more expensive than cigarette-related conditions.

No one on earth says this. You did hint that marijuana health care costs could be more expensive than the war on drugs (marijuana's part) ... or maybe you just did that accidentally. Or maybe your stats were just skewed toward countries that spend nothing on their war on drugs.

after accounting for the proportion of costs related to law enforcement. This study assumed was for Canadians

Cost of healthcare for "marijuana" (or maybe even something that is blamed on marijuana) per user, compared to war on drugs = $20. OH YEAH GUYS, I MEANT CANADA BTW LOL, THEY USE DOLLARS TOO. I WAS TALKING ABOUT A COUNTRY THAT PRETTY MUCH DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT IF YOU SMOKE IN FRONT OF A COP.

If you think America as a whole saves money by prohibition of weed, you don't know much about America.

Your first paragraph: Who cares about fringers? No one realistically thinks marijuana is the cure for cancer, or even any sort of a cure. There is some evidence that it can do stuff like slow down tumor growth, but that's far from being a cure. Your unbiased opinion included mention of fringe, unrealistic beliefs, as though they are the mainstay of pro-marijuana rhetoric.

Second paragraph: The main point of your link is that it costs jack shit. Marijuana causing lung damage is very disputed. Also, an argument that something can cause this or can cause that, without strong evidence or statistics on how many times it has caused this and/or that isn't worth reading.

ELI5: Marijuana. by Barajas93in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sucka27 2 points3 points ago

In terms of treating things like cancer, I won't say that it's impossible, but there's nowhere near enough evidence to refer to marijuana as a cancer cure.

Uh, it's not used to treat cancer. It's used to treat the negative effects of chemotherapy.

In terms of negative effects, since marijuana is associated with some health issues, that would lead to people spending more on doctor bills

How many people do you know that have gone to the doctor for something marijuana caused?
