TROPHY CASE

How would you spend ~$6k? by kim_so_ilin guns

[–]Stubb 0 points1 point ago

That makes the precision rifle a tougher sell.

Not sure why you'd go .338 Lapua over .260 Remington for target shooting.

You may still want to consider some shooting courses, maybe pistol and carbine given your current interests.

TIL Steve Jobs shut down all philanthropic efforts at Apple when he returned to the company in 1997. by 996hurtin todayilearned

As an Apple shareholder, I don't want Apple giving money to charity, I want them maximizing shareholder value. Kick out a dividend and let the shareholders decide if they feel charitable.

Go for an AI AE III. Spend the remaining money on a scope, mount, and Atlas bipod. Mile High Shooting can have it to your local FFL in a week. See if you can also squeeze in a weekend class.

Head to the range knowing that any misses are your fault.

Why have a bunch of mediocre rifles when you could have one good one? That's how I justified my AW.

That's generally my first thought. The second is that someone needs to have kids if there's to be any hope of me getting Social Security checks.

In addition to a threaded barrel, you'll likely also need taller sights unless you go with a Silencerco Osprey.

Hey guys, I was just wondering what m43 was about. Well, mostly its advantages by A_Crazy_Hooliganin M43

[–]Stubb 0 points1 point ago

I shot a D700 for years doing a combo of personal (travel & macro) and paid (wedding & event) photography. The paid work dried up a while back, and with the release of the E-M5 I sold all my Nikon gear to jump into m4/3. I wanted the in-body stabilization of an Olympus body, and the image quality just wasn't there with the E-P1 through E-P3.

The main reasons were to lighten my load, get a tilting LCD for macro, and have access to relatively inexpensive but high-quality primes. Carrying the D700 around on vacation sucks, and I found myself using my LX-5 instead. The EM-5 isn't that much bigger than the LX-5 and produces stellar images.

At what price would you invest in FB? by teegalein investing

[–]Stubb 1 point2 points ago

What is it about Facebook that leads you to believe $30/share is a reasonable price?

Personally, given the financials, I wouldn't touch it above $5 share. I did buy a couple more shares of Apple on Monday; they're rather undervalued at this point, particularly given the revenue possible with an Apple TV.

The mutton in Iceland is incredibly delicious. You can tell that the sheep live a very happy life up until that last day. The real surprise for us as tourists was all the fresh, tasty vegetables thanks to the geothermally powered hothouses.

So the appleseed meet near me sold out. Alternatively what are some good video series I can get to help with marksmanship? by Swiss_Cheese9797in guns

[–]Stubb 0 points1 point ago

I was actually very disappointed with these videos and felt that they glossed over the fundamentals in favor of hours of hard-sell tactics on Horus products. Too bad they didn't spend half as much time on trigger control, building a shooting position, and calling your shots as they did on gee-whiz nonsense. The end result is that the viewer thinks they learned all kinds of cool stuff but isn't ready to shoot a solid group at 100 yards.

I like and recommend their handgun and carbine videos but steer folks away from this one.

Your best bet would be Sniper's Hide Online Training. Check out the trigger school trailer to get an idea of the level of detail. These videos hammer the fundamentals and the truly important parts of making a shot instead of dazzling the viewer with bullshit like the Magpul video.

Horus Reticles? by IamSecretlyARobotin guns

[–]Stubb 1 point2 points ago

The Horus reticles are great for quick shooting against relatively large, unknown-distance targets. You can mil the target, determine the range, and hold for drop and wind without adjusting the turrets. You'll save a couple of seconds over a standard mil reticle.

I wouldn't worry about getting one if your budget is $1k. It's easy enough to dial for elevation and hold for wind.

The market starts to tank - What do you do? by nitonin investing

Keeping cash on hand is essential as there's always a better deal out there waiting to be found. Once found, you may be able to capitalize quicker than other investors.

Peter Lynch was a big influence on me with this one. A recent good purchase for us was Yum! Brands when I noticed that they were regularly posting strong growth numbers in China.

I'm a buy-and-hold investor and don't bother trying to time the market. My strategy has been to look for good values and combine them with returns from dividends and coupon payments. It's been working just fine since this all got going about ten years ago.

I see commodities and metals as a hedge against stocks/bonds going crazy, not as a way to make money.

Annaly Capital Management has been steadily putting money in our portfolio.

Thoughts on Gold/silver? by lippindotsin investing

[–]Stubb 0 points1 point ago

Gold is up from where it was a year ago and up ~250% from five years. I see "getting hit pretty badly" as noise in the market and a buying opportunity. The underlying structural reforms that need to happen to crush the price of gold aren't happening, particularly here in the US.

I own my paper gold through GTU (which has a couple of advantages over GLD) and PRPFX.

[–]Stubb 1 point2 points ago

Yes, you generally shouldn't be 100% all in. Have some money parked on the side that you can use when you see a great buying opportunity.

Peter Schiff: Market-Crushing Treasury Collapse To Hit Around 2013 by Stubbin investing

[–]Stubb[S] 0 points1 point ago

When the Fed lends money to banks, you know they aren't actually lending money, right?

They're creating high-powered money, against which the banks can create money by loaning it into existence. Banks can also get a nice carry trade.

How do commercial banks lend money to the Treasury?

Through buying Treasuries. The Fed can't purchase them directly; it needs to go through primary dealers. In theory, the Fed isn't supposed to bankroll the Treasury, but that's theory. In practice, it's currently buying more than half of all new debt issued by the Treasury. But Europe is farther along the road to crisis than us, so nobody really cares in the short term.

Regarding GDP, I don't think it's a fixed quantity at all! The issue is more that government spending is taking away from what entrepreneurs and individuals would spend and replacing it with what Gosplan wants, which doesn't exactly respond to market signals. When government spends money, it's denying private individuals the chance to save or spend that money to satisfy their desires. Not that ZIRP isn't already killing saving by holding the price of money artificially low.

It's tricky talking about inflation because there are both monetary and price aspects at work. One can talk about inflation and deflation of the money supply. These are both linked to to price appreciation and depreciation, but like you point out, other factors are at work.

Any ideas for someone with one hand? by joe573in guns

Didn't know about that one. Thanks!

Any ideas for someone with one hand? by joe573in guns

[–]Stubb 1 point2 points ago

Scrolled down looking to see if someone already suggested racking the slide using the rear sight and a belt and found HCE's post. Learning to run a pistol one handed is an integral part of intermediate pistol skills. One runs loads the slide by hooking the rear sight on a belt and pushing (don't try this with adjustable sights). To reload, you can either pinch the slide between your knees or kneel down, trapping the slide between the calf and hamstring.

This is why I don't like Novak and other low-profile sights: they suck for one-handed pistol manipulation. See also the Defoor pistol sights by Ameriglo.

Which lens do you think will be your next buy? by targetOOin M43

[–]Stubb 0 points1 point ago

The 60 macro for me. I recently picked up an E-M5 as my first m4/3 camera along with the 12-50 kit, 20 f/1.7, and 45 f/1.8 lenses. Some other lenses in the lineup interest me, but I'll rent them for a weekend before making any purchasing decisions.
